1.1 COMPUTERS
A computer is a machine that takes data as input,
processes it using programs, and then outputs the
processed data as information. Many computers use hard
drives to store and retrieve data. Computers may be linked
together to form networks, allowing them to interact with
one another.
A computer's processing stages are divided into four Fig 1.1
categories: input, storage, output, and processing.
Modern computers are capable of doing billions of computations every second.
The ability to calculate numerous times per second enables current computers to
multi-task, which means they can do multiple tasks at the same time. Computers
perform a wide range of tasks where automation is important. Controlling traffic
lights, vehicles, security systems, washing machines, and digital televisions are a
few examples.
Computers can be programmed to perform practically anything with data.
Computers are being utilized to operate huge and tiny machinery that were
formerly controlled by people. The majority of people have used a personal
computer at home or at work. They are used for a variety of tasks such as
calculating, listening to music, reading an article, writing, and so on.

Input Devices
Keyboard: A keyboard is the most common and most important input device which
helps us input data into the computer. Keyboards are of different sizes.
Therefore, the number of keys varies from model to model. An IBM/PC keyboard
has 84 keys. Now, a window keyboard has 104 keys or 108 keys.
Fig 1.2
Mouse: A mouse is also known as a pointing device. It
can be used to control the position of the cursor on
the screen and to input commands into the computer.
But it cannot be used to enter text into the computer.
Fig 1.3
Trackball: A trackball is an output device that is mostly
used in a notebook or a laptop, in place of a mouse. By
moving our fingers on the ball, we can move the cursor of
the mouse.

Scanner: A scanner is used to transform
a printed copy, a drawing, or a document
into a digital file. This file can easily be
edited on a computer. A scanner can be
connected to a computer using many
different interfaces. Nowadays, it is
most commonly connected to a computer
with the help of a USB cable.
Fig 1.5
Web camera: A web camera (webcam for short) is a digital
camera that is connected to a computer. It is used to share
pictures and have live chats with friends and relatives using
the internet. Always remember, when you make any image
available to other using your webcam, it will remain on the
internet forever.
Fig 1.6
Light pen: A light pen is a pointing device that is
quite like a pen. It is used to select a displayed
menu item or draw pictures on the monitor. It
looks like a pen that can be used on a special pad.
Whatever you write on this pad, can be seen on
the monitor.
Fig 1.7
Joystick: A joystick is also a pointing device that is used to
move the position of the cursor. The functions of the
joystick and mouse are quite similar. The joystick can be
moved in all four directions. It is mainly used in computer
Aided Designing (CAD) and playing computer games.
Fig 1.8
Microphone: A microphone is used to input sound
which is then stored in a digital form. It is used for
various applications such as adding sound to a
multimedia presentation or mixing music.

Output Devices
Monitor: A monitor is an output device. It
looks like a television screen. It is used to
display whatever we type or draw, as well as
the results of the inputs. It also displays the
movement of a mouse pointer. It is also called
VDU (Visual Display Unit). The information
that we see on the monitor is called soft copy.
There are two common types of modern
computer monitors - cathode ray tubes and
flat-panel screens.

Fig 1.11 Printers: A printer prints the output that you
see on the computer screen, on paper which is
called a hard copy. The sends the image (data)
to the printer. It then physically recreates the
image, usually on paper. There are three types
of computer printers-inkjet, LaserJet, and dot
matrix.
Headphones: The headphones give out the sound output
that is produced from a computer. They are similar to
speakers; except they are worn on the ears. So, only a
single person can hear the output at the same time.

Speakers: A speaker is a hardware device that
connects to a computer to produce sound. A
computer speaker is used to produce the sound
created by the computer's sound card.

1.2.1 Compressed Files & Folders
When files or folders take up too much space on your computer, you may wish to
reduce their size. Compressed files and folders require less storage space and
are simple to transfer to another computer or distribute over e-mail. Files and
folders that have been compressed can be copied and transferred like files. They
may also be used as a folder. You can add new files to them or remove files from
them.

1.4 Protecting Computer
1.4.1 Malware
The Internet is fantastic, but you must safeguard your PC from malware threats
(e.g. viruses). Malware is any application that can harm your computer, delete
files, or copy personal information. Malware may also cause problems for phones,
tablets, and other digital devices.
What to do for protection:
You MUST have an antivirus application installed on your computer and keep it up
to date with new malware. You may either purchase an antivirus application or use
the internet to acquire a free program such as Windows Defender.
How to use an antivirus program:
An antivirus tool scans your computer for malware that attempts to infect it. You
may also scan it to ensure that it is clean and safe. How?
To scan your computer for viruses
> Click the Start button (1) scroll the
sidebar down and click Windows
Security. (2)
> Click the Virus and threat protection
button.
> In the Windows Defender Security
Center, click the Scan now button. (3)
> All icons must be in green. This means
that your computer is protected.
> If any icon is in red, ask for your
teacher's help.
Fig 1.26

01- Computer Fundamentals Computing Wonders
How to update an antivirus program:
An antivirus tool can only detect malware if it is aware of it. Because new
infections emerge on a daily basis, you must be connected to the Internet and
download an update almost every day.
To update your antivirus program
> In the Virus & threat protection section, under Virus & threat protection updates
click Check for updates. (1)
> In the Protection updates window, click the Check for updates button. (2)
> Your computer now is protected.
