How does Mesenteric Ischemia Disease Causes l Dr. Achintya Sharma
Mesenteric artery disease occurs when the blood supply to the abdomen is narrowed due to atherosclerosis. This condition occurs when one or more of the arteries supplying blood to your intestines narrow. A blood clot can also restrict blood flow to the mesenteric artery suddenly (acute mesenteric ischemia). Intestinal damage can be permanent if oxygen-rich blood is not available to the cells. Bloody stools may occur less often, but you may experience sudden abdominal pain. It is an emergency condition and you must see a qualified vascular surgeon as soon as possible. To perform an endarterectomy, your doctor makes an incision in the large blood vessel that branches off your heart (aorta) to reach the mesenteric arteries and remove fat and cholesterol buildup (plaques) or blood clots. Mesenteric Ischemia is a chronic condition caused by poor blood supply to your intestines.
