It gives me great pleasure to welcome the directors / committee, players and supporters of Warminster Town FC to Southfield for this afternoon’s TSWL Division One match. [ The Chairman ] Simon Wilkinson Sounds of the Sea Page 4 The first thing I would like to do is thank everyone on the committee, who worked so hard during the evening and all of you who attended our recent firework display for making it such a great night. Every one who was there seemed to enjoy, not only the spectacular pyrotechnics but the food and the really happy / friendly atmosphere. One of the highlights for me though was the video that Janiek, our new resident media genius, produced,. It was so professional and brings a completely different dimension to the clubs image and gives us a great opportunity to raise our profile. So how lucky are we to have not one, but two amazingly talented guys in John Newport and Janiek to photograph and video what’s going on in and around the club? I missed the game at Warminster on the opening day of the season, which saw us collect our first three point haul with a 2-0 win. Apparently it was a bit of a feisty affair, but I have to say that, that’s been the norm in recent seasons! In my opinion its been nothing more than odd moments of control loss but it always seems that the officials see them differently and even when there’s often very little malice or aggression in players actions or words they start flashing cards around in the mistaken belief that this reinforces there control but it seems to me that it often has the opposite affect and does, in fact increase tensions! Having been a referee myself I know how difficult it can be to keep your cards in their wallet. Especially when passions are raised and players are getting frustrated or over excited but that’s where man management skills come in and a calm attitude is needed, getting feisty yourself simply antagonises players and frustratingly that’s only going to lead to more bad feeling! Last weekends game was abandoned by the referee due to an unsafe surface. I wasn’t playing so don’t want to comment but I did have to laugh at our resident genius’s view on the event! Enjoy the game ...

Unfortunately Ray was up against time this week and hasn’t been able to share his thoughts with us, so I’ll step into the breach and have give the benefit of my wisdom but first I would like to welcome the Warminster Town officials, players and supporters to Southfield for today’s game. [ The Management view] The alternative view…. Sounds of the Sea Page 6 This weekend twelve months ago we were at home to Almondsbury and still looking for our first win of the season! It didn’t come that day, we actually drew that game 1-1 with our goal coming from Harrison Newman but performances were improving and that elusive three points actually did come seven days later when goals from Jack Farion and Kieran Cooper were enough to secure a 2-1 win here at Southfield against Longwell Green Sports. We actually went a little run then not losing again until Boxing day and that short but confidence building run was probably the catalyst to us getting out of the relegation places. Scroll forward to firework weekend 2024 and the team is certainly a different proposition. Second place in the division, entertaining to watch, scoring great goals, defending with real commitment and enjoying a comradery that is rarely seen in football these days. Wow, how good is our management team? Unbelievably they think that there is more to come from this group, well I for one certainly want to be there when the boys deliver on that predication because that is certainly going to be some kind of performance. No match against Warminster is a gimme so we will definitely bag our 16th win of the season, but we’ve got used to enjoying three points, so why should today be any different? Bring it on, c’mon u miners...

[Opposition Guide] Sounds of the Sea Page 7 There are records of football being played by a Warminster team as far back as 1878 and the club has played continuously since that time apart from a short break between 1883 to 1885 and during the war years. At the time the club played its home games at Holly Lodge on Boreham Road and as there was no league football at the time, they played competitive challenge matches. That was until they entered the newly formed Wiltshire County League at the start of the 1894/95 season along with Bradford on Avon, Calne, Chippenham, Corsham, Melksham, Southbroom and Trowbridge A. The team finished fourth in the league with a playing record of Pl 14 W 6 D 2 L 6 For 38 Against 36 Points 14. The club won its first silverware at the end of the 1900/01 season when they claimed the Wilts Senior Cup beating Swindon & District League team, Even Swindon United, 1-0 at Chippenham. The winning goal coming in the second half from a Pearce shot. The Warminster team that day was Adam, Carter, Dean, Rutty, Whitmarsh, Turner, Curtis, Pinnell, Pearce, Sims and Holton. The cup returned to Warminster at the end of the 1902/03 and again in 1910/11 but despite finishing runners up on five occasions since Warminster entered the Western League for the first time at the start of the 1930/31 season finishing seventh of seventeen collecting thirtyfive points from thirty-two matches. At the end of the of the 1938/39 season and with war looming the club resigned from the Western League. That season saw them finish fourteenth of eighteen winning twenty-three points from thirty-four outings. Following the war, the club re-joined the Wiltshire County League winning the Premier League Championship at the end of the 1956/57. The club continued in Wiltshire Football until they were accepted back into the Western League First Division at the start of the 1984/85 campaign. Initially It was a bit of a struggle for the team, and they finished the season in nineteenth place out of twenty-two, picking up twentynine points from forty-two games. The 1994/95 season saw the club go closest to being promoted when they finished fourth in the league, missing out on promotion by a single point! Unfortunately, the club was relegated to the Wiltshire County League at the end of the 2001/02 season, however after four reasonably successful campaigns the club applied for promotion and were placed in the Wessex League Division One for the start of the2005-06 season. In 2008-09 the team reached the final of the Wiltshire Senior cup for the first time since 1954 but were unfortunately beaten by Highworth Town after extra time. Cont’d on page 8 .. Sounds of the Sea Page 8 [Opposition Guide] After finishing sixteenth of eighteen at the end of the 2011/12 the club was laterally moved to the Western League where it plays currently. The club struggled to compete for a few years but under the leadership of experienced manager Andy Crabtree the team finished sixth and the following year reached the fourth-round proper of the FA Vase before losing to Bitton 3- 1. After finishing runners-up to Sherborne Town at the end of the 2021/22 season the club were cruelly denied promotion after being beaten 1-0 in the newly introduced play-off’s, in the final, to Welton Rovers in front of a crowd of over 600. As well as the first team in the Toolstation Western League the club have a reserve side in the Trowbridge & District League side and a Ladies team who now compete in the Southern Region Womens Football League Premier Division. Sounds of the Sea Page 12 By Matt Badcock Is it November already? The FA Cup first round proper is upon us, the Isuzu FA Vase is flying along, and the Step 2 clubs are about to enter the Isuzu FA Trophy. Here are a few things that have caught the eye at NLP Towers recently. Friday Funk By the time you read this Horsham will have played their FA Cup first round proper tie at Barnsley on Friday evening. It wasn’t on telly — that was reserved for Step 4 side Sheppey United as they took on Walsall — but moved to Friday night at the request of South Yorkshire Police, who are apparently stretched resource wise! Why the game couldn’t have been played on the Sunday, Horsham don’t seem to have had an answer but it’s impossible not to feel for the Step 3 club on one of the biggest occasions in their 142-year history. Having to travel to Yorkshire on a Friday night was, without doubt, a big blow. Hundreds who were planning to make the trip couldn’t — including the families of players. But it’s also about the weekend as a whole. Players had to get even more time off of work, not to mention missing out on the big build-up that comes with playing in the FA Cup first round. It’s not just about the result but the whole experience. “It was fait accompli and we had to accept it,” Secretary Jeff Barrett told The NLP at the weekend. Farnham Flying One of the trickiest parts of writing for a Sunday publication is being in the lap of the gods when it comes to Saturday results. We often joke about The NLP’s Curse — speak to a player or manager about their team’s excellent winning run and you can almost guarantee they will lose on the Saturday before the paper is out. But there were no such worries when it came to Farnham Town’s incredible start to the season — the Clarets can boast being English football’s only 100 per centres. Last weekend’s 5-1 win over Epson & Ewell made it 11 Combined Counties Premier Division South wins out of 11. “We train once a week and if we don’t have a game on a Tuesday night then we don’t train at all,” manager Paul Johnson told the NLP. “It helps keep us fresh and hungry and the players are keen to see each other come game day on Saturday.” The club have seen a real boom in their crowds in recent seasons and are putting themselves in a strong position for promotion. And if they do lose soon, at least they can’t blame the NLP! Cont’d on page 13 ...

Sounds of the Sea Page 13 [non league paper / in the news] Action from Torpoint v Wellington Cont’d from page 12 .. Hot-shot Heard about the Kendal Town striker who is making a big impression? Having scored more than 70 goals in two seasons for West Lancashire League Division Two side Walney Island, striker James Bailey is now leading the line at the Step 5 ‘Mint-cakes’. He netted 19 goals in his first 18 games for the Northwest Counties Premier Division outfit and is attracting the attention of a number of clubs in leagues above. “I think he can go higher,” manager Jimmy Marshall told The NLP of his contracted ace. G’day Bruce Macclesfield’s intentions for this season’s Pitching In NPL Premier Division are clear to see. They certainly haven’t had it all their own way so far, however, and last week made a managerial change with the departure of Mark Duffy. His replacement has now been appointed with the arrival of former Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday defender Alex Bruce, son of famous gaffer Steve. He will be assisted by Phil Bardsley, the former Manchester United and Burnley man who recently retired. Bath City get planning permission to install a 3G pitch. National League South club Bath City were granted permission by the BANES planners to convert the grass surface at Twerton Park to an artificial surface at a planning meeting recently, (app No. 23/00707/FUL). The club’s ambitious plans to develop the rest of the ground and Twerton High Street was thrown out by planners in 2020 and the club is still considering how best to provide the facilities that will ensure they have a financially sustainable future. The increased income that the new surface will provide is a step in the right direction but with further 3G pitches being developed by schools, local authorities and clubs the long term viability maybe not so assured as it currently is. Interestingly the Bath Preservation Society objected to the pitch conversion on the grounds that the change from natural grass to an artificial surface gave concern on both environmental and health concerns. They claim that synthetic pitches are associated with the leaching of microplastics, as well as the overall life span of artificial turf and means of disposal and replacement. There are additional biodiversity considerations where the Biodiversity Matrix indicates a total loss of habitat across the site, albeit of a poor quality “modified grassland” which could only be attributed very limited biodiversity value. This measurable net loss of biodiversity is contrary to the NPPF and Local Plan Policies NE3 and NE3a. I’m not actually sure their arguments hold a great deal of credibility but a bigger concern is what does the installation of this surface say Cont’d on page 29 ..

[in the news] Sounds of the Sea Page 29 Cont’d from page 13 … about the club’s ambitions, after all they could in theory be promoted to the football league at the end of next season and that would mean the whole thing would have to be ripped up and grass reinstated! Does that indicate there is no ambition in the club to get into the football league and they are happy to stay where they are and finding a way to finance football at this level is all that matters? PUMA hi-vis match ball returns to EFL competitions The PUMA Orbita 1 Hi Vis Sky Bet EFL match balls will return to action this weekend, with the vibrant, yellow-based match ball to be in play for all EFL League and EFL Trophy matches from Thursday 2 November until mid-February 2024. This is the first season since the 2018/19 season where the match balls will be used for all matches during this ‘winter’ period, instead of just for matches that are determined to feature low visibility or extreme weather conditions. The high frequency moulded ball provides outstanding shape retention, durability, and reduced water absorption to maximise performance. The ball has been crafted with 12 panels which have a 3D textured 1.2mm PU surface to enhance aerodynamics and control, as well as reduced water absorption. The rubber bladder works alongside the PAL (Puma Air Lock) valve for perfect air retention. The ball is FIFA Quality Pro certified which means the ball is suitable for elite use. The first League match adopting the new hivis balls will be Leicester City v Leeds United at King Power Stadium on Friday 3 November. Editors comment .. It’s amazing how such a simple but vital component of the game has changed over the years without too much publicity and be so different at various levels of the game. The ball that was generally in use when I was playing was the Mitre Multiplex. It was used at most levels of the game and was always pretty good when relatively unused but it didn’t take too long to deteriorate and after a few months of use they often became mis-shaped and in the rain absorb water which caused them to become quite heavy! The other problem was that they were quite expensive which meant that non-pro’ clubs didn’t have the luxury of using a new one in every match and often made a couple of balls last the season! It wouldn’t happen these days or would it? Somerset FA statement over rise in disciplinary cases this season Somerset Football Association confirmed that the opening months of the 2023-24 season cont’d on page 30 ...

Sounds of the Sea Page 30 [in the news] Cont’d from page 29 .. have seen an unprecedented increase in disciplinary cases. In fact, the FA said it is the worst start to a season they have ever seen. According to the FA, discipline cases are up by 50% compared to the same time last year and the number of abandoned matches is double that of 12 months ago. Season 2021/2022 and Season 2022/2023 were already two of the worst in terms of discipline and now the FA is seeing a worrying trend in the opposite direction. Somerset FA CEO Jonathan Pike said: "Most worryingly, a large number of these cases are in youth football. Cases involving youth players and referees have risen by an alarming 66% from this time in 2022. "The main offenders in youth football are adults, be they coaches, managers, club assistant referees, spectators or parents. "Young people in football, regardless of their role, deserve to enjoy the game free from abuse and negativity, and should expect adults to behave in a manner that sets a positive example." It would be wrong to think this is restricted to the youth game. The rise in indiscipline is spread across all aspects of grassroots football, from mini soccer, youth football, adult male and adult female. Pike added: "The knock-on effect is of course felt across all areas of the game, not least in refereeing. Recruiting referees is in itself a difficult task, however for those who come through our courses the environment they face is hardly conducive to retaining them. "This is even more crucial when the referee is a child themselves. Sadly, we’ve had more incidents of adults abusing new or young referees, with young referees being left in tears by the conduct of adults." The FA will now begin more detailed work with clubs in Somerset to reinforce codes of conduct and adopt a zero-tolerance policy for poor behaviour. This includes robust disciplinary procedures and sanctions for those who fail to adhere to these standards and could include the cancellation of fixtures. And CEO Pike added that everyone involved in the sport to ask themselves am I contributing to the problem? He said: "I would ask everyone involved in the game, whatever your role, your age, the level you are involved at to take a moment to reflect on their actions and interactions, both on and off the field. "Simply by taking ownership of our actions and behaving responsibly and decently, we can prevent these incidents taking place. It is for all of us to do our bit and do what is right and, if we do, the collective response will see us return to everyone taking part in the game we all love in the way we want it to be." Editor’s comment … whilst I can’t disagree with the sentiment of the message, I have to say that a bible quotation springs to mind, Cont’d on page 34 ...

Sounds of the Sea Page 35 [ The Club]

[ RTFC History ] Sounds of the Sea Page 36 The club’s match day programme has been called ‘Sounds of the Sea’ for quite a number of seasons and in that time I have been asked on numerous occasions why! The simple answer is that some of the clubs older supporters can recall the song forming part of sing-along sessions on the way to and from away games. Which is still the case at some matches and when ex-players get together for a beer or two! Of course that simple answer leads onto where the original song came from and why did Radstock pick it up! Well, I have to admit, that I have not been able to find any evidence that proves how this ’oddity’ has come about. However, I have developed a theory from looking into the history of the club which I think makes sense. In the early days of the club both before and after the first world war they generated funds by holding concert parties and musical evenings in local halls. The press of the time reported on how popular these shows were and they noted the inclusion of popular music hall hits. One of them could well have been ‘Sons of the Sea’ which was a song written by Felix McGlennon and I believe this was adopted and the words changed slightly to become a theme for the club! Of course that leads onto why a town not exactly on the coast would be enthusiastic about a song that praises the Royal Navy. Once again its an assumption but I believe the connection might be HMS Radstock . She was an R62 class destroyer which was launched in1916 and saw service as an Atlantic convoy escort ship during the first war. Although her history was not particularly illustrious as it appears her only claim to fame was colliding with one of the merchant vessels she was escorting! It is reported that the crew did parade through the town so the connection may come from that visit! HMS Radstock photographed in 1917 in a calm North Sea
