“It’s only a Pin” by S. Kurtz Hingley

A fond mother watches her boy where he stands
Apart from his comrades tonight,
As they place on his camp-battered tunic, a badge . . .
An Eagle, the emblem of right.
It seems just a few short months have passed
Since he joined with the youngster next door
How proud he was then of his Tenderfoot Pin
As they told of the message it bore.
But the years have gone as he struggled along
To learn what the Scout law’s about;
He practiced them daily, the Oath and the law
Until now, he’s an Eagle Scout.
You may smile in your worldly old wisdom at this
And say, “Why, it’s only a pin.”
But I tell you no honors he’ll gain as a man
Will mean quite as much to him.
The Red, White and Blue of the ribbon you see
Are the symbols of honor and truth.
He has learned how to value these fine attributes
In the glorious days of youth.
And the outflinging wings of the eagle that rests
On the breast of this Knight of Today,
Are the things which will lift him above petty deeds
And guide him along the right way . . . .
Yes, it’s only a pin, just an Eagle Scout Badge,
But the heart that’s beneath it beats true
And will throb to the last for the things which are good,
A lesson for me . . . and for you.

Scoutmaster’s Message

Dear Troop 240 Family:

Congratulations to all our scouts and the Troop 240 family on another year in scouting. This is
my first year as your scoutmaster, trying to keep the bar as high as I can by following the troop
traditions and footprints. We have had many great adventures and activities since September 2017;
Shooting Sports Weekend, International Dinner, Wood Badge, Court of Honor, Winter hike in the
storm, two crews for the 2017 Klondike at Alpine, Pack 24 Blue and Gold, Midnight Run with the
Church, Memorial Day Flag planting and ending the year with a fun and successful Cook Off. In the
mist, preparation of another expedition to Philmont Ranch with multiple hiking trips to the Palisades,
Harriman and VCP. With the help of the Troop Committee Members, Moms, Dads and Scouters, we
have had a very busy year. I personally want to thank everyone for helping to make my duty easy.

With the help of everyone, the troop reached a milestone of 150 Eagles Scouts in the nest this
year. Our troop got to revive our friendly relationships with the Historic Saint Paul’s Church in Mt.
Vernon and the Sawmill River Alliance. To all the Eagles, your rank reflects leadership and
responsibility and the community and nation will now expect this from you. As you hear so many
times; earning that rank is a mark of excellence and now you are among the elite of our society. Add to
that, be among the 150 best of the troop, as the founder and our host expect.

Thanks to the Pack 24 Leaders and parents, at the last Blue and Gold ceremony the troop had
six boys crossover. Keeping the Pack 24 and Troop 240 relationship as solid as possible guaranties the
success and longevity of this great troop.

Our troop is looking forward to a strong family adventure together with our Charter and host,
the Riverdale Presbyterian Church and our dear Rev. Krystin Granberg and the Congregation.

In closing, I would like to thank our beloved two previous Scoutmasters, and all the Assistants
scoutmasters for your help with myself and the boys this year. I must also thank our Committee Chair,
Advancement Chair and the Eagle Coach for their demanding work on planning, organizing and
delivering this great program to our scouts.

May Lord God and the Great Scoutmaster bless you, BSA and Troop 240.

Yours in Scouting,

Michel W. Tambwe,
Scoutmaster Troop 240

Dear Troop 240 Family:

Congratulations to our two new Eagle Scouts, Danil Liebman and Karun Ellango! We are
proud to have them added to the long list of Troop 240 Eagle Scouts. This will be a lifelong
source of pride for you, your families and friends.

Many thanks to everyone in the Troop 240 family for all the hours of help with Eagle projects
and all your other efforts over the past several years to help these Scouts with this great
achievement. Your help with the Troop’s many endeavors is invaluable and is essential to
the lasting success of Troop 240.

Thank you, Michel Tambwe for all your hard work and service as our Scoutmaster. Your
dedication has earned out gratitude and admiration. Also, special thanks to our
Advancement Chair, Laura Liebman. Thank you for encouraging and pushing our Scouts to
ensure that they made their deadlines.

We also wish to express our appreciation to the charter organization, Riverdale Presbyterian
Church, interim Pastor Krystin Granberg and our Charter Representative, Emily Peterson.
Thank you.

Next year promises to be another great one for our Troop. We are already planning exciting
new activities for our Scouts and Scouters and some are looking forward to their next high
adventure, the Philmont Expedition.

A very happy and adventurous summer to all!

What is an Eagle?

A bird that soars above
the crest of
a mountain’s edge,
with eyes
that scan the earth
from miles away,
seeking to discover
new possibilities.
Feathers,
that coast
across the winds
of life’s
endless gifts
finding the highest
resting stops.
Searching to find
unknown places
rich with
knowledge,
filled with wisdom,
so all of us
will one day
truly understand
the value of our freedom.

Constantine Andreadis, 2005

My name is Danil Liebman and I have been a scout since November 2012. I was never a Cub
Scout, unfortunately, but the six years of scouting made up for it. I go to school at Riverdale
Kingsbridge Academy in Riverdale, and I am currently a junior. I am interested in Criminal
Justice and computer science. This past year, I have been involved in a yearlong
environmental internship with Friends of Van Courtlandt Park. We have been doing hands on
projects involving the removal of invasive, non-native plant species, similar to my Eagle
project at off the Putnam Trail.

Before I joined the Boy Scouts, I was a much quieter and shy kid. However, scouting
has helped me improve. Since joining, my leadership and communication skills have
improved. This is because of help from my friends in the troop, my family, National Youth
Leadership Training, University of Scouting, and my summer job at CUB World. Throughout
my scouting career, I have learned to become more responsible and helpful. I am thankful to
Troop 240 for giving me opportunities that I wouldn't have gotten elsewhere. In the summer
0f 2012, I took part in a short camping trip in the Berkshires. I learned about the environment.
The focus was on leave no trace. We also did wilderness survival. I liked it enough that I
joined the Boy Scouts.

In my years in scouting, I have been given several jobs: Assistant Patrol Leader,
Librarian, Quartermaster and then Troop Guide. As Librarian in 2015, I put the merit badge
books in order as well as kept the library organized. I kept a notebook of scout names so that
I could make sure the books were returned. As Quartermaster, I was in charge of the

inventory of the troop’s closet. As Troop Guide, I help, teach and support younger scouts. In
doing these jobs, I have been forced to communicate more, something I am improving on. I
have earned awards through scouting including Leave No Trace, earned many merit badges,
achieved Order of the Arrow Ordeal rank, fulfilled many community service hours, and TMR
camp awards.

I want to thank those who helped me. I am really thankful to Gus Andreadis for
guiding me with my Eagle project. Of course, it’s hard to forget Assistant Scoutmasters Mike
Dailey and Howie Malatzky driving me to Camp Keowa at 5 in the morning for my fishing
badge, because the lake at Aquehonga had no fish. For the genealogy badge, my Aunt Joanne
took me to the Genealogy Library in Little Rock, Arkansas. Thanks to Kirsten Buckley, a
parent and assistant scoutmaster, I got my swimming badge. I want to especially thank my
mother who pushes me every day and never lets up and rarely gives me any slack.

Lastly, I want to thank my three scout masters, Avi, Chris Browne, and Michel
Tambwe. Without them, I would not have achieved the rank of eagle.

I have to say to the younger scouts, it's always in your favor to ask for help, something
that wasn't easy for me. But that has grown better over time. Five years of scouting feels as if
it all started a week ago. I had a great time as a scout and even though I’m an Eagle now, I
will keep participating with Troop 240 as an assistant scoutmaster. If I could redo these last
five years, I would

Yours in scouting – Danil Liebman

My name is Karun Ellango and I am sixteen years old. I have been a scout since the fall of
2013. My journey into scouting was completely by accident. I had moved from Brooklyn to
the Bronx in 2010. I was not actively looking into joining the boy scouts nor was I aware there
was a troop so close to my home. Soon after the school year started in 2013, I saw the Troop
240 open house flyer in the library and I decided to check it out and went for the open house.
I liked what I saw and joined the troop – and here I stand today having completed the long
and difficult journey to becoming an eagle scout.

I was a little nervous about what to expect when I joined the troop. There were other kids
that joined the troop that had been cub scouts and that have known each other and scouting
for far longer than I have. But the troop proved to be a warm and welcoming family and I
quickly settled and became very involved with all facets of scouting. I progressed through
the scouting ranks fairly quickly, becoming a Tenderfoot in Jun 2014, Second Class in Nov
2014, First Class in Mar 2015, Star Scout in Sep 2015, Life Scout in Mar 2016 and finally Eagle
Scout in May 2018. And as I became familiar with the scouting world I took on leadership
positions within the troop as well starting as Quartermaster and then as Assistant Patrol
Leader, Patrol Leader, Senior Patrol Leader and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster. As a
Quartermaster, I learned the importance of planning and staying organized and keeping
camping gear well maintained. And as a Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader, I learnt
skills of delegating work and responsibility and making scouts accountable for their work
and the importance of organizational hierarchy, roles and responsibilities.

I learned a lot of scout skills at summer camp in TMR and completed many merit
badges there and at the Wintoree at Durland. I have many great experiences like the various
times we went camping at Alpine like the Klondike and Cook-off competitions. I can safely
say that I learnt cooking only because of scouting. The boy scouts program has taught me so
many life skills and it is difficult to list all but here are a few – camping, hiking, cooking,
sailing, kayaking, swimming etc. The best parts of being a scout were the trips to the
Yellowstone National Park in Jul 2015 and Sea Base Bahamas in Aug 2016. Yellowstone is on
a volcanic crater and the geysers and hot springs were a truly amazing experience. Cruising

around the islands of the Bahamas in a sailboat at Seabase was an experience that I can never
ever forget in my life. We did a lot of swimming and snorkeling in this trip and saw colorful
coral reefs and marine life in a completely immersive experience. We slept in the nights on
the sailboat drifting in the oceans and that was an experience by itself. Other experiences I
vividly remember are the trip to Gettysburg in Apr 2015 and camping at Camp Hero,
Montauk in May 2016. We have a trip planned in Aug 2018 to Philmont that should be a very
challenging and enjoyable experience.

I am currently a sophomore at the Bronx High School of Science. I am taking 3 AP
courses, and next year I plan to take another 3 AP courses and a post AP course in my junior
year. One of the AP classes I am taking this year is AP Computer Science. In the future I plan
to be a computer engineer or scientist because my forte is math and computer science and
these subjects really interest me. I am part of the programming division of our school’s FIRST
Robotics Team, SciBorgs 1155 and I plan to take on a leadership position soon in my robotics
team. I am also part of the Model UN team at my school and have represented my school at
several competitions. I have represented the Model UN team at elite events like NHSMUN,
an international Model UN conference hosted at the UN Building.

I have learned a lot from being a Boy Scout and maturing over the years. I am grateful
to Troop 240 and all of its scouts and leaders that have spent time helping me learn scouting
skills and lessons. Without the support of the troop I would never have been able to complete
my eagle journey. In particular I would like to express my thanks to the current scout master
Michel Tambwe and past scout masters Avi Rubinsztejn and Chris Browne for mentoring me
all these years. My years in scouting and the lessons and skills learnt will help me deal with
all challenges in life as I move on to college in a couple years time and beyond that as well.

Yours in Scouting,

Karun Ellango

A Scout Prayer

Dear Lord,

Bless all those everywhere who contribute to shape the hearts, minds and
bodies of young people. Let us remember what they have taught and apply it
daily.
When facing deceit and dishonesty,
let us be Trustworthy.
If we see hypocrisy and faithlessness,
let us be Loyal.
Where disregard of others and mere materialism prevail,
let us be Helpful.
When we find people in despair,
let us be Friendly.
In an atmosphere of ill manners,
let us be Courteous.
Where some measure manliness in brutality & crudeness,
let us be Kind.
Though lawbreaking and rule-scoffing are common,
let us be Obedient.
While others grumble and grouch,
let us be Cheerful.
In an environment blighted by waste and extravagance,
let us be Thrifty.
When confronted with danger and temptation,
let us be Brave.
As we see filth and pollution everywhere,
let us be Clean.
While witnessing impiety,
let us remember to be Reverent.
In short, in a world that has for generation after generation lamented the lack of
good examples,
let us, as Scouts, stand out, grow up and be real adults.

Amen.

The Star-Spangled Banner

O! Say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;

O! Say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

TMR Evening Grace

Tireless Guardian on our way, Thou hast kept us well this day.
While we thank Thee we request, Care continued, pardon, rest.
While we thank Thee we request, Care continued, pardon, rest.

Amen.

Scout Vespers

Softly falls the light of day, as our campfire fades away.
Silently each Scout should ask, have I done my daily task?
Have I kept my honor bright, can I guiltless sleep tonight?
Have I done and have I dared, everything to be prepared?

Taps

Day is done, gone the sun, from the lake, from the hills,
from the sky. All is well, safely rest, God is nigh!
