• “You are the light of the world. A city that is
set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they
light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on
a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in
the house. 16 Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven.”

In The Sermon On The Mount, Jesus Uses Two
Powerful Metaphors To Describe His People

• Salt is hidden; light is visible.
• Salt works secretly, while light works openly.
• Salt works from within, light from without.
• Salt speaks of the indirect influence of the gospel,

while light portrays direct communication.
• Salt is primarily negative. It preserves by

retarding corruption. Light is more positive. It not
only reveals what is wrong, but helps produce
what is right.

And a light to my path.”

• Light changes deadness

– Luke 1:78-79 - “Through the tender mercy of our God,
With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us;
79 To give light to those who sit in darkness and the
shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of
peace.”

– Matt. 4:16 - “The people who sat in darkness have
seen a great light, And upon those who sat in the
region and shadow of death Light has dawned.”

– Acts 26:18 - “To open their eyes, in order to turn them
from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan
to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and
an inheritance among those who are sanctified by
faith in Me”

• Light conditions dreariness – The children of
God are like a warm ray of light in a dreary
place

– Prov. 15:30 - “The light of the eyes rejoices the
heart, And a good report makes the bones
healthy.”

And his favor is like a cloud of the latter rain.”

see the light.”

the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself
for me.”

• A substantiation to the Lord

– 1Peter 1:7 - “that the genuineness of your faith,
being much more precious than gold that
perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found
to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of
Jesus Christ”

The Principles Of Our Light

• Everyone has the capacity to have this light
within him

– Prov. 29:13 - “The poor man and the oppressor
have this in common: The LORD gives light to the
eyes of both.”

• This light is created within us by the word of
God

– Prov. 6:23 - “For the commandment is a lamp, And
the law a light; Reproofs of instruction are the way
of life”

The Principles Of Our Light

• Our response to the word of God determines
whether or not the light will shine from us

– Prov. 24:20 - “For there will be no prospect for the
evil man; The lamp of the wicked will be put out.”

• The light within us cannot be hidden

– Psalm 37:5-6 - “Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass. 6
He shall bring forth your righteousness as the
light, And your justice as the noonday.”

• Darkness is overcome by the light

– Psalm 139:11-12 - “If I say, Surely the darkness shall
fall on me, Even the night shall be light about me; 12
Indeed, the darkness shall not hide from You, But the
night shines as the day; The darkness and the light are
both alike to You.”

– Eph. 5:11-13 - “And have no fellowship with the
unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things
which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things
that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for
whatever makes manifest is light.”
