• “You are the light of the world. A city that is
set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do they
light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on
a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in
the house. 16 Let your light so shine before
men, that they may see your good works and
glorify your Father in heaven.”

In The Sermon On The Mount, Jesus Uses Two
Powerful Metaphors To Describe His People

• Salt is hidden; light is visible.
• Salt works secretly, while light works openly.
• Salt works from within, light from without.
• Salt speaks of the indirect influence of the gospel,

while light portrays direct communication.
• Salt is primarily negative. It preserves by

retarding corruption. Light is more positive. It not
only reveals what is wrong, but helps produce
what is right.

unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.
12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things

that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for
whatever makes manifest is light.”
