KOA Presidents Report March 2017
Hi KOA Members,
Sorry all, I am a bit late with my report this month thus the delay in this issue. Thanks for holding the presses Milton.
Hope this newsle@er finds you all relaxed and well aCer the Easter Holiday weekend, the weather was superb, I even got the car out for a quick run to Canungra on Easter Sunday.
Not a lot to report this month with the aCermath of ex Cyclone Debbie forcing the cancellaKon of many car related events. Hopefully our members affected by this weather event are doing OK. Please let your Commi@ee or our Welfare Officer, Levella Watkins, know if there is anything the club can assist with.
As discussed at the last meeKng we will be holding an awards day at the clubhouse on Sunday the 23rd of July. We plan to introduce some changes to the trophies which we will discuss at the next meeKng. We will also be introducing a Members Choice Award. It will be your chance to vote for the member who you believe has the best car in the club. It will be voted for on the awards day and the car must be present on the day.
Your Commi@ee is presently busily working on the next Swap Meet, a very important fundraiser for the club and its nominated charity. We have flyers and posters available so please try to get these out to as many events or businesses as you can.
Coming up this weekend we have the Rust & Chrome Event at the Norwell Motorplex on 23rd April, looks to be a good day and I hope to see you there.
Regards, Craig

A Note from the Editor... Welcome to the April Newsletter of ‘Kustom News’, I thank David Kaye for giving up his time and effort for letting me take some photos of his HR Holden, this month you will see another Holden, this time from from long standing member Ernie Hill and a closer look at his EH Holden, in the May Edition I hope to have a Ford grace the pages of the centrefold this time, so keep your eyes peeled for this edition. With the tail end of Cyclone Debbie hitting us with 36 hours of constant rain and almost a meter of water in some
parts and a huge amount of wind, there was a number of us affected by this weather event, those that were cut off that live up in the Hinterland, floods in the Logan area and the Northern NSW town of Murwillumbah and Lismore having its fair share of Floods, with almost total devastation of the main street of Lismore where I am sure Ian Macdonald would know many people, also members Ash Heron & family, Rocco Gioffre & Julie were both hit with a fair bit of flood damage in Tallebudgera & Murwillumbah, we do hope all those affected come out of it ok.

David Hack Car and Plane Show 7th of May, Huge show, if you would like to go please let us know. EDITORS NOTE: Wintersun at Murwillumbah June 2nd to the 4th, please plan your own way to this event, some questions still about this event unanswered. If all is on track please talk to other members attending and arrive together if possible. Rocco & Jules have offered everyone to come pitch a tent at their place if they need to stay somewhere, so thanks.
General Business:
Milton re the latest KOA club magazine, you asked for it and its in the new centrefold of a KOA members car that will go in each month, who will it be next? Now 48 pages, full of info and pic, you get it free every month via email, but if you would like to subscribe to a full colour hard copy in a magazine format please see Milton.
Restoration Society Car Show, 30th July, Ron Whelan spoke to us and is looking into this event, and with the SCARAB car club till 2pm, Run’s working on this and trying to finish it up at midday if possible? We’ll find out more soon.
Ron Whelan spoke about members hearing about businesses that may like to put up a Trade Stall at our KOA Swap Meet, please put them in touch with Ron ASAP, as we need more Trade Stalls.
General Business (cont):
Ron Whelan also spoke about the sale of a 38 Dodge that he and Keith Woodbridge were selling and that is now sold, Ron mentioned that I (Milton) put it on our KOA website to sell, they have offered the KOA club $100.00 for placing it on the KOA website, this is a generous offer from them both so thank you. Ron said that its a great way to sell your car quickly as we have many contacts.
Editors Note: Please note that as far as Ron new it was on the website, this is incorrect, as the KOA media officer I put the sale item on our KOA Facebook site, and I also placed the advert and pictures on another 3 major classic car Facebook groups that within a few days can get up to and over 1000 views of your sale item all around Australia. While this does not discount the fact that our KOA website & Facebook page is good to place for the sale item, it will get a lot more views on the other pages and have a better chance of selling quickly, as it did in this case.
Milton spoke about the KOA website, it has recently had another update, your will notice a change on the home page, not only at the bottom for major events coming up but also the members car pictures that cycle in one spot, this is now 5 pictures towards the top of the page, that cycle to different pics every time you log in or view the home page, hope you like the change.
Ian Bolton asked about borrowing the KOA Gazebos, he asked if there was any policy about lending out KOA equipment, this was talked over by the committee and there was no problem in Ian borrowing this equipment, as long as it was returned in the same condition.

’Gemma’s Memorial Walk’ in correlation with the ‘Isabella and Marcus Brainstem Paediatric Brainstem Tumour Fund
The Isabella and Marcus fund provides seed funding for DIPG projects that would otherwise not be funded from government grants. The goal is to provide researchers with an opportunity to access larger sources of funding that will accelerate research for the development of treatments for brain cancer in children.
Funding was provided for the 3rd Collaborative Paediatric Cancer Research Day at The Hudson Institute, June 29th, 2016. This type of sponsorship fosters scientific exchange, providing an impetus for scientific progress towards better treatments for children with cancer.

Longest Cruise in the World? Part Three
Previously in Part Two I mentioned that we started to meet up with other Cadillac owners who were coming along on the journey to cross the Nullarbor and head to Busselton in WA for the Cadillac Nationals in 2014, so we (Milton & Levella) left the KOA club house in our 61 Caddy with 59 Caddy Custom trailer & Torsten Loth from Germany, Colin Hook (now new KOA member) and his partner Denise Hayes in their 66 Cadillac Convertible, we also had Neil & Jill Hardment in their Red 59 Cadillac Coupe deVille and now have met up with Des Eyers with Les Holt.
The next Caddy owners we were to meet up with was Bruce & Anne Tregoning from Hervey Bay QLD and their 77 Cadillac Coupe deVille with only twenty or thirty thousand something original miles on the clock, so this one was trailered and you can so understand why this one was on a trailer, not wanting to put the long extra k’s on the clock of this beauty, absolutely pristine show room condition this 77 Cadillac.
After a nice lunch at the Inglewood Pub We continued on with our cruise south bound with 5 classic Cadillacs to meet up with some Victorian Cadillac owners. We stopped in Moree for the night, we arrived late afternoon, so plenty of time to find our Caravan Park, the only problem was it was still pouring with rain, we found our Caravan Park and stopped and started to put up our tents and gazebo, but the rain was just two heavy so we decided to go grab a cabin, we were a little disappointed as this was our first night, and we were looking forward to using our Double Swag.

Longest Cruise in the World? Part Three (cont)
The night was not long enough While heading out of Moree we stopped off at one of our sponsors, Atlantic Oil and picked up a case of Motor Oil, and yes some of this came in handy, not for my Caddy, but Des’s 63 Limo was having a bit of a problem with a main seal that was not so good, even thought the boys used a fair bit of oil, they certainly got the good stuff from Atlantic Oils.
Now headed for Parkes, our next over night stop, had lunch at Coonabarabran and met up at the visitors centre where the locals had set up a light lunch for us, also talked with a local reporter who took some pics for their local paper. After some food and drink we left and started cruising down to Parkes, a few hours later we arrived and settled in to where we stayed for two nights, during the following day we had and arranged a tour of “The Dish” in the morning, then went to the local Pioneer Museum where they had prepared a nice afternoon tea, and the local car club came out and showed us some of their cars, and you can see in the pics we had a write up in their local paper too. More next month.

Did You Know?
Did you know that you all should have a copy of the KOA By-Laws which was updated in July 2014, a copy has been sent out to you via email every year the memberships come around, and also mailed out to six KOA members that do not have an email address, so you should all be aware of the following first six items in the KOA By-Laws, and they are:
1.1 - Consumption of alcohol or drugs is left to the discretion of the members but members must conduct themselves in an orderly and responsible manner when wearing club insignia or attending a club event. Editors Note: I think all of us are abiding by this first item, so good on you, if you have a club shirt, please make sure you wear it, if you don’t have one, why not? Please see Paul Manning our treasurer and make arrangements with him to obtain one.
1.2 - All members must make every effort to notify the club of their inability to attend a club meeting or event so as their apology can be noted in the Minutes. Editors Note: Not all members are doing this, a text message is sent out to 99% of the KOA membership about the following months meeting, its very easy to send a reply to me to say your not coming, so please make sure you do this.
1.3 - Executive Committee (EC) members are ineligible to receive annual best attendance awards. Editors Note: Damn it!
1.4 - All members are to sign the KOA attendance register when attending any club house meetings or events. Editors Note: Please make sure you do this, it does count towards the Trophy presented to the KOA member for the Club Member of the Year, so make sure you sign in and let the cruise director know you are at an event.
1.5 - All members may be rostered to assist the Social Secretary on meetings nights, events or as required. Editors Note: I’m sure Jo will like this one, and a big thanks to Julie Stepheson and Levella Watkins for being a big help for Jo here, if they are not there please let Jo know you can step in to help from time to time.
1.6 - It is the responsibility of all members to advise the secretary of any changes to their contact details such as phone, address or email. Editors Note: Please take note of this one, so important, we must have your current details.
Did You Know?
Drink driving on private property
Message from KOA member Tony Rehn one of Toowoomba’s finest:
Did you know that you commit the offence of Drink Driving if you drive a motor vehicle on private property whilst over the legal limit?
The offence of drink driving is found in Section 79 of the Transport Operations (Road Use) Management Act 1995 and provides that a person commits an offence if they drive, attempt to put in motion or are in charge of a motor vehicle whilst over the legal alcohol limit. This section makes no mention of having to be on a road.
Section 80 of the same legislation provides police with the power to breath test any person the officer reasonably suspects, has within the preceding three hours, to have driven, attempted to put in motion or was in charge of a motor vehicle on a road or elsewhere – which includes private property.
Some examples of behaviours that would constitute an offence of drink driving if the person was over the legal limit include:
• Doing doughnuts in a vehicle in their own backyard (drive).
• Attempting to clutch start a car down a driveway (attempt to put in motion).
• Starting up and revving a motorcycle within a camp ground (in charge).
The simple rule for drink driving is – if it an offence on a road, it is also an offence on private property. Don’t drink and drive.

Retroautos March 2017 -
HK Holden prototypes, V8 HK Kingswood
When Holden released the HK range in January 1968 they called it the “New Generation”. It was wider, longer and bigger than previous models. Here was a genuine six seater, with a range of six and eight cylinder engines and an almost endless list of options. The HK acknowledged that Australians were getting richer, larger and were prepared to pay for options that individualised their car. Holden offered so many options they boasted they could make one million HK’s and no two would be alike. More of this article can be found in the online magazine Retro Autos, here is the link: https://www.shannons.com.au/library/news/XUG4N1B68B5C16J7/index.html?page=1

Mal’s Funnies
Paddy and Murphy were talking one afternoon when Paddy tells Murphy, "Ya know, I reckon I'm 'bout ready for a vacation. Only this year I'm gonna do it a little different. The last few years, I took your advice about where to go. Three years ago you said to go to Hawaii . I went to Hawaii and Molly got pregnant. Then two years ago, you told me to go to the Bahamas and Molly got pregnant again. Last year you suggested Tahiti and darn me, if Molly didn't get pregnant again.” Murphy asks Paddy, "So, what you gonna do this year that's different?"
Paddy says, "This year I'm taking Molly with me."
Liefman’s Joke of the week.
‘When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon.
Guess we’d be better off leaving the car in the garage.’

So far these copies of ‘Kustom News’ can be kept as a part of the history of your car club, in the last 16 years of KOA we only have a few typed pages of the minutes of meetings to reflect on, wouldn't it be nice to flick through some pages of a magazine to see info about your car club, its members, runs we’ve been on, stories from members and what they have been up too, pictures in colour of what cars we have seen and what cars members are working on, detailing the continued history of Kustoms of Australia, Gold Coast, YOUR CAR CLUB. Maybe a picture of YOUR car on the front cover, maybe a full story of you and your car in the centre spread! In 2017 you will continue to receive the KOA Newsletter ‘Kustom News’ that you already get electronically as a Link to a PDF file in an email each month after the general meeting, I know what its like reading it off a computer screen, not real great, or maybe your computer emails are not working so well and you miss seeing it.
With my printing background I have turned these Newsletters into a professionally printed FULL COLOUR glossy Magazine for you to purchase, a subscription every 12 months, or you can purchase a single copy from a particular month, at this point in time you will be looking at 11 issues per year at $12.00 per issue, I know it seems a lot, but it costs over $12.00 (depending on the amount of pages printed) to print, fold and staple at the printers, you would be surprised and shocked at how much time it takes to put this sort of thing together, we are talking about 20 to 30 hours every month, as a member you can help me to help you, you or someone you know may have a business they may wish to advertise in ‘Kustom News’ with an audience of 120 members the right sort of business within the pages of our magazine will do well, over time will continually improve the ‘Kustom News’ and its contents, the latest issues are already 48 pages.
If you would like a back dated copy of the magazine I can do this, the price will be $12.00 per copy and I will bring them along to the next general meeting or for an extra I can post them too you.
I know you can buy a good quality car magazine at the post Newsagent, but they are printed in the hundreds of thousands, your club magazines are a limited run of a dozen or so, plus you will more than likely see a members car in the pages or even your own. After you have collected the first 12 months of the magazine, as a bookbinder I can offer you a discount rate to actually bind the collection together into yearly volumes if you would like, this would be a professional hard covered book with the title on the spine and front cover and would look great with all your car stuff at home.
