1 MEASURING AND PREPARATION

MEASURING THE VERGOLA
This is the responsibility of the owner/customer, to ensure that all the information
supplied IS detailed and correct.
MATERIALS SUPPLIED BY OWNER
In most instances the owner will have provided the materials and constructed a suitable
frame to put the Vergola into. If you have not already done so, refer to our manual
“CONSTRUCTING A TIMBER FRAME TO SUPPORT THE VERGOLA”.
MATERIALS SUPPLIED BY VERGOLA
When in kit form we only supply the workings of the Vergola.
*louvres (colorbond)
*gutters (colorbond)
*link bar
*punch strip
*standard flashings
*operator/motor
*nuts, screws, pop-rivets, silicon, wire, downpipe and pop, can of spray touch-up paint
and various other bits and pieces.
PREPARTAION
Plan all facets of the installation before starting work. Painting should be done prior
to installation. The Vergola louvre is slotted into a punched strip, which sits inside the
gutter. Each louvre is 210mm wide, but covers only 205mm. The extra 5mm is lost as
a 2.5mm overlap on each side.

3 GUTTER INSTALLATION
The gutters are perhaps the most important step in correctly finishing your Vergola.
They have been supplied in lengths that are slightly longer than the finished project.
This is to allow for small variations in the size of your frame-work and also to provide
sufficient length at the corners for you to overlap and pop rivet them together to make
a watertight corner.
You need to give some consideration as to where you are going to discharge the storm
water. This will often determine the way the slope of the louvres is to go.
You have been supplied with….
.. one 245mm deep gutter. This is normally the one your downpipe will connect into.
.. one 200mm deep gutter. This is normally the one the motor will go in.
..two end gutters. These go across the ends and enable the water to flow from the
shallow gutter down into the deep gutter.
The vertical back of the end gutters is only about 100mm high and when you first install
it you will still have a considerable amount of your beam exposed. This is no problem
as the end flashing will extend down over the exposed beam and down into the end
gutter.
There is a sketch of the gutter folds on the next two pages to show you how to cut the
corners to create a professional looking mitre corner.
The Vergola gutters create the fall within the supporting framework, (assuming the
frame is level) so you need to install the 245mm deep gutter on the side you wish to
have the downpipe.

Vergola Page
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

These sketches show how to mark out the cuts on the gutters to create a professional
looking mitre joint at the corners.

The 245mm and the 200mm gutters have a simple 45 degree cut on the ends and are
usually installed first.

The side gutters have a 30mm fold on the ends which is there so that you can pop-rivet
and silicon the corners together.

Vergola Page
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

Gutter installation
Start of by measuring the length of the 200mm deep and the 245mm deep gutters and
cutting the simple 45 degree mitre cut at each end.
(It may sound silly to the uninitiated but tin-snips are available in “right-hand” and
“left-hand” versions. This has nothing to do with wether you are left handed or not,
it refers to which side of the cut you are working on. If you can beg borrow or steal
a pair of each you will find that the task of cutting your corners, and the hole for the
downpipe very easy indeed.)
Fix these gutters in place with a few 25mm clouts along the top edge. (The main fixing
will come later.)
Measure and cut the end gutters according to the diagram including the tabs for the
overlap. It is wise to cut and fold one end first, measure the length, then cut and fold
the second end. Be very careful not to make the gutters too long. If you do you
will find it very hard to put them in.
The gutters should slide down in neatly from the top. Carefully work the tabs into
position and drill and pop-rivet the corners. A 1/8th inch drill bit or a No 30 bit is the
correct size for the rivets supplied with your kit.
Seal the corners with the silicon provided.
Once again fix the end gutters into position with a few clouts. (Final fixing will come
later).
Hint…It is a good idea to fit the downpipe pop before you put the gutters up into
position if you can. This is easier than trying to cut the hole whilst working upside down
over your head.

4 PUNCH STRIP INSTALLATION
The long strips of metal with the “pockets” punched in them to receive the end of the
louvres are referred to as punch strips.
The widest punch strip goes into the 240mm gutter and the narrowest goes into the
200mm deep gutter. This will give you about 40mm fall to help drain the rainwater off
the louvres.
You will have to trim the ends of the punch strips so that the centre of the first punch
is at exactly the correct distance from the end to allow the first blade sufficient room to
rotate without hitting the beamwork.
If your frame was constructed to provide the optimum clearance (around 20mm at
each end) you will find that the centre of the first punch will be about 122mm from the
end.
Before you actually trim off the end check to see that the other end is going to be the
same distance from the other end. If it isn’t, adjust the amount you are going to trim
off so that both ends are the same.

If your project is longer than 3.6 metres your punch strip will come in several pieces.
You will have to overlap the pieces taking care that you maintain the correct 205mm
centre to centre punch spacing when you overlap them.

Vergola Page 10
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

The widest punch strip goes in the deeper gutter and the narrow punch strip goes in the
shallowest gutter. This will give you about 40mm fall to help drain the water off when
it rains.

Attach the punch strip on with a fixing screw below every third punch. We normally
provide 25mm hexagon head screws for this job. You can drill a pilot hole and insert
them with a socket spanner or you can buy an adaptor of your electric drill in which
case they can “self drill” and screw in one operation. If the screws have rubber washers
on them we suggest that you remove them.

Hint…make sure that you keep these screws in a straight line to achieve a professional
appearance.

5 LOUVRE INSTALLATION
A little thought needs to be done prior to installing your louvres.

Louvres can open in this direction or The opposite direction. depending
(Recommended) on the individual requirements.

It is highly recommended that the louvres open away from the prevailing rain
whenever possible.
Once you have determined which way you wish to open your louvres you may insert
them. Keep the middle two/three louvres out of the centre to make it easier for you to
install the motor.
Install the louvres with the little end channel facing upwards. This is to help the water
drain from the louvres.
Right way up.

Vergola Page 12

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

Retaining the Louvres
To retain the louvres, and to stop them from blowing out in high winds there are two
little retaining lugs formed into the top of the pockets. You will have to bend them out
using a screwdriver.

(Wise people always save this operation to the end of the job. You never know when
you are going to have to remove a louvre because you have accidentally installed one
upside down or something. But don’t forget to do it!!!!)

7 LINK BAR INSTALLATION
The link bar is the long narrow strip of metal with holes in every 205mm.
It links all the louvres together so that when one louvre turns thy all turn together.
The link bar goes over the TOP of the louvres.
You will notice that there are a series of “scallops” taken out of the bottom of the link
bar. These are to allow the link bar to close down fully and the “scallops” fit over the
centre of the louvre rotating pin. The sketches below show both the right and wrong
ways of fitting the link bar. Its not the end of the world if you fit it back to front. Just
take it off and refit it the other way around.

RIGHT

GOTCHA !!

To fasten our link bar to the Vergola louvres on you must use a speed clip, which is
supplied by Vergola. Use a suitable size spanner to push these clips on.

Vergola Page 15
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

Depending on the length of your Vergola you may have to join the link bar.

Hint… At this point you have an opportunity to check the closing of the louvres. It
may well be that you can actually improve the closing of the louvres on long jobs
by deliberately varying the 205mm measurement when joining two or more link bars
together.
What you do is clamp the two link bars together using a small clamp or vice-grip pliers,
then open and close the louvres rather firmly a few times and check how well they are
closing. By slightly adjusting the 205 measurement you can often make a significant
improvement in the closing.

Join the link bar permanently using a small bolt or two pop rivets. (A small bolt is the
better of the two options.)

Open and close the Vergola a few times by hand to ensure that it is opening
and closing fairly freely and not catching or sticking anywhere.

8 MOTOR INSTALLATION OPERATION

Brief overview for experienced people. A more detailed explanation follows
and should be read by anyone installing a Vergola for the first time.

1) Screw the long motor arm on to the inside of the gutter as per the template
supplied.

NB. 5 Screws required for the Motor Arm Base.

Scissor Arm Timber Frame:
14g x 39mm Hex NEO CL3 Zincalloy Timber Screw.
Metal Frame:
12 x 35mm Hex NEO CL3 S.D.S.

2) Put the motor on to the arms and retract it fully in.
3) Apply power very briefly to push the arm out about 6mm.
4) Close the Vergola louvres fully by hand and push down on the link bar.
5) Trace the slot in the actuator arm on to the link bar and drill a 6mm hole near the
base of the slot.

The edge of the 6mm hole should
be 2mm clear of the bottom of the
slot
Important Note If the louvres are closing in the opposite direction every thing has to
be done in reverse.

Vergola Page 17
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

The motor is very easy to install but there are some precautions that you have to take
to ensure reliable operation for many years to come.
It is generally best to put the motor about the middle of the Vergola. Put it in the
highest gutter as this holds the least amount of water. (If you put in the deepest
gutter you may have problems as the motor may block the flow of water in heavy rain
and cause the gutter to overflow.
The drawing below shows the location of the screws for mounting the scissor arm
to the frame. We usually supply you with a template to mark the holes so this
should be easy.

The motor should be retracted fully when the Vergola is closed. This means that you
may have to reverse the template and thus the holes depending on which way your
Vergola will be opening. (The pictures above show the louvres closing to the left).

Vergola Page 20
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

Check that the moving arm of the operator is on the outside of the link bar. (Between
the link bar and the gutter.) Check that the motor is fully retracted by touching the wires
on the 12 volt battery or the 12 volt transformer that will be driving your Vergola.
BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SHORT CIRCUIT THE BATTERY OR THE POWER
SUPPLY AS PERMANENT DAMAGE MAY RESULT.
Reverse the wires to the motor and extend the piston about 6mm by touching the wires
momentarily on the power supply.
Put the motor on to the scissor arm pins and secure it in place with the retaining bolt
and clip.
You are now ready to mark the position of the bolt which will connect the scissor arm
to the link bar.
Close the Vergola louvres fully by hand and push down on the link bar.
Trace the slot in the actuator arm on to the link bar and drill a 6mm hole near the base
of the slot.

The edge of the 6mm hole should
be 2mm clear of the bottom of the
slot
Important Note:...If the louvres are closing in the opposit direction every thing has
to be done in reverse.

Vergola Page 21
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

Next, bolt the scissor arm to the link bar taking care that the washers and spacers are
exactly as shown in the sketch below.

The moment of truth !!!!
This is a good time to see if it is all working according to plan. Touch the motor wires
directly to the transformer or battery and check that it is opening and closing freely.
It was suggested earlier that it was a good idea to leave out the two louvres where the
motor is going to make it easier by leaving room for you to work. These last two may
now be installed.

9 ELECTRIC WIRING
Good electrical connections are the key to successful trouble free operation of your
Vergola. Soldered connections are probably the best. Next best are good, sound,
properly crimped bullet connectors. Never crimp the terminals using pliers - you simply
don’t get a permanent connection - it only looks good. Always use a good quality
crimping tool to do the job right. Spade type connectors are probably O.K. on simple
switched circuits but can cause problems on the electronic control systems.
Electrical Pliers

There is a number of different operating options ranging from a simple switch to
sophisticated electronic controls with automatic rain sensing so you will find the wiring
diagrams along with your switch, or on the following pages of this booklet.

The solar panel can go in any sunny position facing towards the sun. Make sure that
you connect the red on to the “+” terminal of the battery and the one with the black
stripe to the “-” terminal. Otherwise the panel will discharge the battery.
Look carefully around the edge of your solar panel. You will see a small, square, hole.
This is a drain hole to drain away any condensation or moisture that my build up inside.
Make sure that the drain hole is pointing slightly downwards.

14 FLASHINGS
The gutters and beams are fitted with a capping to protect the timber from the weather.
Where the gutter adjoins the house a flashing is provided to weather seal from the
house to the Vergola.

Let us know the exact thickness of the beams you are using so that we can supply the
correct flashings.

Vergola Page 31

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

15 CLEAN DOWN
This stage may not seem very important, but it is. You must remove all drill fillings from
gutters and louvres to avoid surface rust (soapy water) and remove excess silicone.
Your louvres require the same care as your car does.
SWARF
Swarf is a dirty word.
It means all the metal particles which can come from cutting, drilling, grinding,
hacksawing, etc.
You must not let these particles remain on the louvres or inside the gutters.
IMPORTANT Lock your angle grinder away and swallow the key. NEVER use it within
5 kilometres of your Vergola. Wind blown dust from these tools can land on a roof 20
metres away and be completely invisible - That is until it starts to rust.
Clean out the gutters as you go along and give them a good sweep out each night while
you are working on the project.
Rust stains from swarf can often be mistaken for rusting of the product itself. This is
rarely the case. If you do have a problem with rust stains, consult the B.H.P. Technical
Bulletin at the rear of this manual.
REMEMBER Prevention is better than cure.

Vergola Page 32
(Vic.)

VERGOLA “The Award Winning Opening Roof”

16 MAINTENANCE
Your Vergola should require very little maintenance.
It is a good idea to hose the louvres down occasionally to keep them fresh and looking
like new. This is especially important if you live near the sea or in an area that has a
high level of industrial fall-out.
A small amount of lubrication on the moving parts of the scissor operation, especially
the centre pivot pin - should be applied at least twice a year. (More often if you live
in a severe environment such as seaside or industrial localities.)
The end caps and the long link bar don’t need any lubrication.
NEVER, NEVER, NEVER walk on your Vergola louvres. They are designed to keep out
sun, wind and rain. They are not designed for walking on.
