TARGET II – WOMEN'S HEALTHCARE AND WELLNESS

AKA Caregivers' Day Observance!

The Care for Cargivers Initiative:
Caregivers spend so much time taking care of others that they
neglect their own health and well-being. Minority caregivers,
especially African-American women, are less likely than non-
minorities to take care of themselves and address the link
between the stress of caregiving and mental health. This
caregiver syndrome places African-American caregivers at a
higher risk for the adverse effects that can be assoicated with
caregiving. Caregiver syndrome, when neglected, as a dual
impact on the quality of care the dependent receives also.

Alpha Kappa Alpha will continue to raise national awareness
regarding the impact of caregiver syndrome on the quality of
health of caregivers, especially African-American women, and
to increase awareness of resources and support available

Strategies:

Partner with local organizations and provide workshops

and community events.

Provide resources to caregivers regarding practicing 3
preventive healthcare and self-care.

Soror Dorothy King is a graduate of Temple University.

She is a retired assistant professor of sociology. Soror Dorothy is an
accomplished playwriter and founder of PenOwl Productions.

If you want to be someone, sometimes you need to claim it.
That is the message Dorothy King, who is a professor of behavioral
sciences at Penn State, learned when she began to write plays. “I’ve
always written . . . but I didn’t take myself seriously as a writer,” King
said. “One day, I said ‘I’m a writer.’ That’s when I officially became a
writer I kind of claimed it.”

That was in the 1970s. Eventually, she participated in an International
Women’s Poetry Festival, which included about 13 women from
different ethnic groups reading poetry. King read a poem she had
written about relationships. “After I read and the program was over, . . .
these women asked me, ‘Where is your book?'” King said. “I realized at
that moment . . . that any experience I’ve had is not unique to me, and
that freed me up to feel comfortable about writing.” Since then, King
has written three full- length dramas with music and 12 short plays.

The preceding question and answer article with Soror Dorothy was
published in the York Daily Record in 2001 and appeared in the
newspaper’s “Black History Profiles in Heritage” distributed to several
hundred York County classrooms in February 2007.

Soror Dorothy is a Golden Soror, initiated in 1969 at Alpha Kappa Alpha

Sorority, Inc., Delta Mu Chapter.

Soror Angela Sharpe is a proud Lincoln University ('89) and Palmer
Theological Seminary ('14) graduate. She is the founder and CEO of
Eternal Life Christian Center (Norristown, PA): a 501c3 non-profit that
offers housing, clothing, Christian ministry and other resources to
those in need.

To Soror Angela, giving back is simply a way of life. From a young
child, Soror Angela was led to serve with charitable organizations
such as UNICEF, SPCA and the March of Dimes. Before the age of 21,
Soror Angela led the United Way Loaned Executive Program, training
numerous volunteers to develop the business acumen needed to
successfully identify and secure new donors. At the same time, she
balanced working as a Marketing Executive for IBM, earning
numerous
President’s Clubs and leadership awards.

Eventually, Soror Angela made her way to Xerox, where she
completed a successful career as a manager leading a sales force
across the Mid-Atlantic region. In this role, she earned countless
awards — including President’s Club, PAR club and a ranking among
the top performers in the company.

Answering a call from God in 2013, Soror Angela shifted her focus to
ministry. Specifically, she was guided by the mission of improving the
lives of those who've suffered from unfortunate life events. By
recognizing that attaining a basic level of living sometimes requires a
helping hand, she set out to build a non-profit to provide affordable
housing to families across the Greater Philadelphia Area. In keeping
with this mission, Soror Angela also founded The Blessing Shop,
located in Norristown, PA, which provides new and used clothing at
no charge to anyone in need.

Outside of her business and ministry, Soror Angela serves on the
Board of Directors for Peer Respite: a non-profit focused on
improving mental health. She also serves on the Board of Directors
for House of Women in Need (House of W.I.N).

Soror Angela was initiated into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
Epsilon Sigma Omega, Fall 1990. She lives in North Wales, PA with her
husband, Pastor Kenneth Sharpe, Sr. and their six children: Kenny Jr.
(32), Justin (25), Jason (23), Chastany (22), Courtney (21) and Elijah
(13).

NOVEMBER
Hodegos Report

As the 11th month of the year, November is often considered the
‘transitional’ month. The time of year between fall and winter, with
shorter days and cooler nights, with fallen leaves and a winter breeze -
HELLO November! As we gather together with our loved ones this
November, let’s remember that it is also a perfect time for reflection. A
time to consider our collective experiences and to learn from them.
Perhaps, being thankful will change our perspectives and bring warmth,
happiness and thankfulness.

Sorors,
Let’s Be Present.
Let the Season Flow with Grace.
Expect Nothing – Give Thanks.
Speak Kindness, Impart Love.

Then,
Watch it Return…

HISTORY CORNER

OUR HERITAGE - THE 70'S

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC., EPSILON SIGMA OMEGA CHAPTER HISTORY
THE 1970'S

Soror Gail M. Davis, Historian

Epsilon Sigma Omega Chapter remained a Presidents in the 70’s
small chapter during the 70’s. Six members
were initiated into the chapter during this Gladys Nelson 1971-72
decade. Small but mighty, the Chapter
Fannetta Nelson Gordon 1973-74

reenergized itself in 1975 with the slogan
Ruth Jackson 1975-77
“Come Alive in 75.”
Janie Dodd 1978-79

In 1971 the Chapter began to hold
an annual Luncheon and Card Party

to raise funds for its scholarships
and other programs. In 1977, the
Chapter’s annual scholarship was
named in memory of charter
member and third President of
Epsilon Sigma Omega Chapter,
Mary Alice Chisley. She was known
for her magnanimous spirit of
charity and her concern for
excellence in education.

The first recipient of the Mary Alice Chisely Memorial Scholarship
was Evangeline Wormsley (Kimber). This young lady became a
member of Alpha Kappa Alpha when she went to college. She later
returned to the Harrisburg area where she served as the respected
and highly acclaimed principal of John Harris High School until her
untimely death in 2008. In 1977,

Epsilon Sigma Omega Chapter, along with its supervisory undergraduate chapters Delta Gamma,
Penn State University and Iota Chi, Millersville University, hosted the 58th North Atlantic Regional
Conference at the former Host Inn in Harrisburg. Below is the Winter 1977 Ivy Leaf Magazine
article highlighting the conference.

16

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC., EPSILON SIGMA OMEGA CHAPTER HISTORY

THE 1970'S

Soror Gail M. Davis, Historian

After an eleven-year hiatus, the Thirteenth
Debutante Holiday Cotillion was reinstated in
1978 with vibrant support from the
community. Once again, the Cotillion became a
significant event during the Christmas holiday
season and the major fundraiser to support
the varied Epsilon Sigma Omega community
service projects and scholarships. Richard
Wilson returned to choregraph the intricate
waltz, debutante presentation and pageantry.
The Zembo Mosque once again became the
venue for the Cotillion and the Ball.

In 1979, the chapter began exploring ways to
address the health care needs of the
Harrisburg African American Community.
Access to health care and limited resources
plagued many in the community. The Hamilton
Health Center in Harrisburg was approached
with a proposal to collaborate with the chapter
to host a community health fair that would
provide free health screenings and highlight
the resources and services provided by the
Center. The proposal was enthusiastically
received and in 1979, the Chapter sponsored
the first Hamilton Health Fair.
