Helping Hands for Hunger
A Message from The Board of Directors
and The Gala Committee
What a year it has been. The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted us all, but the
impact on the homeless, low-income wage earners, and some small businesses has been
catastrophic. Hunger is expected to increase by 56 percent in NJ. This year is one we will
always remember.
Everyone needs to do their part to help those less fortunate – especially now
that the need is so great. For the past 38 years, Eva’s has been on the front lines feeding
people who are homeless and hungry in our kitchen, providing substance use treatment
in our Halfway Houses, sheltering men, women and mothers with children, and providing
vital medical care in our Clinic
At Eva’s, Msgr. Puma’s mission of serving people who have lost their dignity and
hope marches on.
We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the New York Football Giants
for over 30 years and we are proud to honor them at this year’s Virtual Gala. After years of
serving meals in our Community Kitchen, this year they increased their commitment by
running a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for the Community Kitchen. In addition,
they are participating in a mentoring program with clients in Eva’s Substance Use and
Criminal Justice counseling program. We are indebted to them for their generosity and
support.
On behalf of the poor that Eva’s serves, the board, and the gala committee, we
thank you for your support. Enjoy this season and let’s count our blessings knowing we
have done our part to help those in need.
Together we can and will make a difference.
May God bless all of you and your families,

About Eva’s Village
When our founder Msgr. Vincent E. Puma started feeding the hungry and homeless
in 1982, he said, “You must feed them first as you can’t help someone who is hungry.”
We are honoring his sentiment this year at our Virtual Gala because we understand that a
person cannot change his or her life if they are hungry.
We will see an alarming increase in hunger this year in our state–from 900,000
to 1.2 million individuals will go hungry as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising to
the challenge, we have kept Eva’s doors open and we continue to offer life-saving and
life-changing resources for people who have nowhere else to turn.
Our Community Kitchen never missed a beat when the pandemic hit.
Since March, we have provided more than 180,000 meals for the hungry. We serve
meals not only to homeless individuals, but also to many with low-wage jobs who
have run out of resources at the end of the month.
Throughout the pandemic, in addition to feeding the hundreds who come for
daily meals, Eva’s has remained deeply committed to caring for the 200 men, women
and children who are living in our Halfway Houses and Shelters. Eva’s also provides
other services including substance use and mental health treatment, recovery support,
and medical care, along with permanent housing, to help these individuals recover and
stablilze.
We are grateful for your partnership in following the vision of Msgr. Puma and the
mission of Eva’s. Thank you for your support of our 2020 Virtual Gala, Helping Hands for
Hunger. Together, we truly can make a difference!

Honoring
New York Football Giants
December 8, 2020
Our Honoree
New York Football Giants
We are pleased to honor the New York Football Giants for their partner-
ship and support of our Community Kitchen for over 30 years! Each of those
years we have welcomed Giants Rookies to meet our neighbors when they come
to serve lunch in our Community Kitchen. This year, the Giants have deepened
their commitment to Eva’s Village through their #TogetherBlue campaign which
raises awareness about issues faced by the vulnerable individuals we serve. Led
by Tight End Evan Engram, a dozen coaches and players are working directly
with Eva’s staff and clients to understand the socioeconomic issues, including
food insecurity, substance use, incarceration, and poverty, that bring people to
Eva’s Village for support.
• Mentoring Clients – Team members are connecting with some of our clients
throughout the fall football season. They stay in touch by phone to offer sup-
port and encouragement on a weekly basis to individuals who are working to
recover from substance use disorders.
• Fighting Hunger – Our GoFundMe Campaign, “Help Us Score a Touch-
down Against Hunger” runs for the four-month football season. The Giants
are spreading the word, hoping to raise $2,500 each month from fans and
followers–and they are offering a dollar-for-dollar match for donations up to
$10,000!
Giants Rookies (L) 2019 Annual Day of Service in Eva’s Community Kitchen continued a 30-year
tradition; Evan Engram (R) talks about Eva’s programs on the Hidden Pearls Podcast.
