Art and Science... Architectural Lighting
for the built environment
Our architectural lighting studio offers lighting design
consultancy services to meet client’s vision for the built
environment, and is the latest addition to The HIDI Group’s
family of services.
The idea of a specialized lighting group stems from Hidi Rae’s
desire to offer clients a complete and integrated building
system design service. The studio is led by award-winning
lighting designer Rebecca Ho-Dion at our Toronto office and
Saju Oommen at our Dubai office. They bring a new
dimension of creativity and experience to the group in a field
where lighting techniques and designs are becoming more
complex and requirements are more stringent.
Process and Philosophy
We believe in a collaborative process with the design team to
produce lighting solutions that are functional, visually pleasing,
and integral to the architecture.
While maintaining sensitivity to budget, schedule, and
sustainability requirements, we design with the understanding
and knowledge of the latest trends, technology, and
illumination methods to develop strategic lighting solutions.
Consistent verbal and visual communication with the various
stakeholders ensures our designs are seamlessly integrated
and resonate throughout all aspects of the project. This
communication also facilitates clients’ visualization of their
designs in the context of light to achieve their objectives.
Services
The goal of our lighting design studio is to provide high quality
lighting consultancy services to architects, interior designers,
landscape architects, artists, and property owners, both locally
and internationally, for a wide variety of project types.
We participate in all stages of the design process – from
initial concept design through to the final documentation and
verification phases. In addition, we offer daylighting and
lighting peer review as part of our portfolio of services.
Global Thinking
In today’s global economy, it is imperative to align yourself with a
partner equally adept on the world stage. We possess extensive
international experience, and are currently working on projects
in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. With offices in Toronto,
Western Canada, and the Middle East, as well as staff who
have worked around the globe, we are proficient in the technical
standards and local cultures that prevail in different regions.
Skilled in adapting to unique markets and your changing business
environment, our diversity, combined with teamwork amongst all
stakeholders and remote access technology, ensure that we provide
quality solutions regardless of geographic location.
We think globally, utilizing our international exposure to identify
emerging trends and best practices, yet act locally, adhering to
local code and regulation while applying lessons learned to optimize
your design solutions.

O -14 Tower – Business Bay*
O-14 Office tower is located at Business bay, Dubai. The lighting scope for the tower, locally
playfully called the “cheese grater” tower included lighting simulation study and luminaire
specification for RUR Architecture and Erga Progress. The building is 102m tall with 23 floors
and area of 300,000 ft2 held up by the core and exoskeleton so the space inside is largely
column free. The facade has 1000 circular openings of various sizes. The lighting to the tower
was a three layer approach. Surface grazing flood lights wash the outer surface. The circular
openings get arch accents using linear washers mounted on the inner surface of the exoskeleton
all mellowed by an ambient light spill from office interiors.
