SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF
NATURAL RESOURCES

Effective utilization of the natural resources in order
to maintain and enhance the resilience of their
ecosystems and the services they provide with the
main aim to assure the resources availability always
meet the present and future needs of the human.

WHY NEED MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES

i) Judicious use of natural resources and avoiding wastage
of natural resources.
ii) Long term planning for the use of natural resources so
that it last not only for the present but also for future
generations.
iii) The exploitation of natural resources should not be for
the benefit of a few people but should be distributed
equally for all.
iv) While extracting and using natural resources we should
also plan for the safe disposal of wastes so that no damage
is caused to the environment.

MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES: FOREST

a) Importance of forests :-
Forests help to preserve biodiversity.
Forests are natural habitats of plants and animals.
Forests provide timber, wood, fuel, medicines, fodder,
etc.
Forests help to maintain ecological balance.
Forests help to control climate and rainfall.
Forests help to prevent soil erosion and controls floods.
Forests help to maintain the oxygen–carbon dioxide
balance in nature.

MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES: FOREST

b) Stake holders of forests :-
People living in and around forests depend on forests
for their livelihood.
Industrialists who use the raw materials from forests for
manufacturing paper, medicines, furniture etc.
Forest Department of the Government who owns the
forests and controls the resources from the forests.
Nature and wild life organisations who want to conserve
and preserve forests.

MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES: FOREST

c) Conservation of forests :-
Afforestation – planting of more trees.
Preventing or reducing deforestation.
Preventing over grazing by cattle.
By setting up wildlife sanctuaries, national parks,
biosphere reserves etc.
Undertaking social forestry programs like UNIMAS-
Takasago project for planting and protecting trees on a
large scale.

MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES: WILDLIFE

a) Importance of wildlife :-
Wildlife helps to preserve biodiversity.
Wildlife helps to maintain food chains and food web.
We get useful products from wildlife like food,
medicines, leather, bones, honey, lac etc.

MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES: FOREST

b) Conservation of wildlife :-
Preserving the natural habitats of animals.
Banning poaching of animals.
Protecting endangered species of animals.
Setting up of wildlife sanctuaries, national parks,
biosphere reserves etc.

PRINCIPLES IN MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES

1.Adaptive management = management practice applied
to solve certain problem that is in line with the present
requirement of the natural resources that includes
planning, monitoring, reviewing and amending
processes.

2.Collaboration & engagement = promote and engage in
collaboration and cooperation to ensure effective
management practice.

3.Public participation = include the public involvement
and ideas in decision-making.

PRINCIPLES IN MANAGEMET OF
NATURAL RESOURCES

4. Evidence = search all relevant evidence related to
understand the root of challenges related to the natural
resources.

5. Multiple benefits = identify the benefits and economic
value of the natural resources and their ecosystems.

6. Consequences = determine the short, medium and long
consequences of the actions in the selected management
practice.

7. Preventative action = prevent significant damage to the
natural resource and ecosystem.

MANAGEMET OF NATURAL RESOURCES:
THE MALAYSIA FRAMEWORKS

Sustainable management of natural resources in Malaysia
is in accordance with these frameworks;

1.International : Sustainable Development Goals by the
United Nations

2.Local : Government policies developed by different
department/agencies related tonatural resources.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal
call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and
improve the lives and prospects of everyone,
everywhere.
17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in
2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable
Development which set out a 15-year plan to achieve
the Goals.
