What is Academic
Writing
writing which communicates ideas, information and
research to the wider academic community.
writing refers to a style of expression that researchers use to
define the intellectual boundaries of their disciplines and
specific areas of expertise.
Why need academic writing & library skills?
• Scientists require the key skills of information literacy &
writing skills, to use and communicate information in an
appropriate and effective manner.
• Writing & information skills are an immensely important &
powerful tool in the academic world.

• 6 Ws key in writing
1. Who? Who is this writing audience?
2.What? What is the important of the document?
3.When? How soon does it need to be submitted?
4.Why? For what reason is it being written?
5.Where? Where is the document going?
6.How? How will the document be distributed?

1. Differentiate between exact words vs. ideas
2. When you cite someone’s ideas, they should be
paraphrased or summarized (i.e. rewritten in your own
words).
3.The citation source should be provided. Any time you
use exact wordsor phrases from the citation they must
appear in quotation marks.

How to avoid plagiarism?
Seven Steps for Successful Paraphrasing
1. Read the original a few times.
2. Put the original passage aside
3. Take some notes on the main id as from memory.
4. Write your paraprase - try rearranging ideas in a different order.
5. Check your paraphrase with the original.
6. If there are any phrases that are identical to phrases from he original, either
put quotation marks around them.
7. Cite your source according to the citation style you are required to use.
