HELLO GUYS
AND WELCOME
TO STU2073
OUR FIRST LESSON UNIT

RESOURCES
CONTENT FOCUS

Definition of Ecosystem
environment, natural classification and Natural resource and
resource and ecosystem Biodiversity key component in
natural resource
management
ENVIRONMENT
DEFINITION
The conditions that surround someone
or something and influences that affect
the growth, health, progress, etc
NATURAL RESOURCES
DEFINITION
Any materials that exist in nature that
were not created by humans and are
beneficial to humans in some way,
either directly or indirectly, and are
valuable to humans
ECOSYSTEM
An ecosystem is made up of all
the organisms and the physical
environment with which they
interact
ECOSYSTEM= ENVIRONMENT +
NATURAL RESOURCE
THE ECOSYSTEM'S
CLASSIFICATION
BIOTIC
organism in the ecosystem interact
with other organism such as flora
fauna
ABIOTIC
non living organism including
physical and chemical feature
which affects organism in the
ecosystem
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN BIOTIC
AND ABIOTIC FACTORS
THE SPECIFICS OF THE ECOSYSTEM
BIODIVERSITY
MEANING
The enormous variety of life
on Earth
CATEGORIES
Can be divided into genetic
diversity, species diversity and
ecosystem diversity
VASCULAR PLANTS MAMMALS BIRDS AMPHIBIANS REPTILES
15,000 species 307 species 785 species 242 species 567 species
FRESHWATER AND MARINE FISH BIODIVERSITY
2068 species HOW MUCH DO WE HAVE?
THE MALAYSIAN BIODIVERSITY
LOGO
The MyBioD logo illustrates how all life on earth is
interconnected in a wonderful web of life
The logo depicts the richness of Malaysia’s
biodiversity which is represented by the tree,
animals, birds, insects and marine life.
The tree symbolizes the gentle mother earth which
shelters, nurtures and takes care of us, who in
return needs to be cared for too.
The mother and child in the logo signify the role of
everyone and custodianship in biodiversity
conservation with the need to protect and conserve
our rich natural heritage for future generations
WHAT ARE NATURAL
RESOURCES?
MEANING
naturally occurring substances that are
considered valuable in their relatively
unmodified (natural) form.
OTHER MEANING
Natural resources are materials and
components (something that can be
used) that can be found within the
environment.
HEAVEN IS UNDER OUR FEET
AS WELL AS OVER OUR HEADS.
WHAT IS CALLING OUR ATTENTION?
WE ARE BLESSED WITH RICH
NATURAL
resources are depleting every day.
DATA SHOWED
Forest and cultivated land is being depleted
due to urbanization, over population and over
consumption.
Wild life resources are being lost due to illegal
poaching, hunting and industrialization.
Water resources are being contaminated
MANY EYES GO THROUGH
THE MEADOW, BUT FEW
SEE THE FLOWERS IN IT.
NATURAL RESOURCES
MANAGEMENT
The management of natural resources
such as land, water, soil, plants and
animals
Focus on how management affects the
quality of life for both present and
future generations.
WHY SHOULD WE MANAGE OUR
NATURAL RESOURCES?
Natural resources are over exploited leading to
several critical consequence which will put the
future plant, animal and human society in serious
risk.
Due to increase in the population,
industrialization and urbanization the demand
for natural resources is increasing and their
availability is limited. So there is a need for
proper management of natural resources.
WHY NEED WE CONSERVE OF
NATURAL RESOURCES
To maintain ecological balance for supporting
life.
To prevent different kinds of species
(biodiversity).
To make the resources available for present
and future generation.
To ensure the survival of human race.

NATURAL RESOURCE
ON UNIMAS LOGO
The clasped hands symbolize unity in
diversity a concern for the environment
and society as well as the exploitation
and optimization of new and useful
knowledge in development. Together
the hands and the tree form the letter 'S'
for Sarawak.
UNIMAS logo consist of Tualang trees
THE BOTANICAL PROFILE OF THE
TUALANG TREE
Vernacular Name : Kayu Raja (Sarawak), Mangaris
(Sabah), Mengaris (Sabah), Tahid Kayan ), Tanid
(Murut), Tanyit (Sarawak), Tapang (Malay)
Tualang (Malay)
Scientific name : Koompassia excelsa
Uses : Host tree for Apis dorsata (Giant Asian
Honey Bee), which hangs its large parabolic
combs from the tree's horizontal branches, and
whose honey are harvested by the local people.
For tool handles, railway sleepers, flooring &
dining table.
NATURAL RESOURCE NAMED AFTER
UNIMAS
Mapania unimasiana
Discovered from Bintulu Division
Growing in mixed dipterocarp forest
Unique inflorescence, where the staminate
flowers (surrounded by pistillate flowers (female
making it different compared to the rest of
Mapania species
This is the 1 st ever species named after UNIMAS
