Nutrient for Plant

Plants require nutrients for normal growth.
These must be in a form useable by the plants and in
concentrations that allow optimum plant growth.
Furthermore, the concentrations of the various soluble
soil nutrients must be properly balanced.

Essential Elements in soils for plant growth

Plants need at least 16 elements.
3 elements (C,H,O) via photosynthesis and carbohydrates
other organic molecules from 90% plant dry weight.
3 macronutrients are N, P, K
3 secondary (macro nutrients Ca, Mg, S)
7 micronutrients (B, Cl, Cu, Fe, Mn, Mo, Zn)
Other elements Co, Ni, Si, Na, V either essential or
beneficial to some plants

Essential Elements in soils for plant growth

Major roles of these elements in plants

The major nutrients or macronutrients

The macronutrients ( phosphorus, potassium, sulphur,
calcium and magnesium) are required in relatively large
quantities by plants.
Plant growth may be retarded because
1.These nutrients are lacking in the soil.
2.They become available too slowly.
3.They are not adequately balanced.

NITROGEN (N)

NITROGEN (N)

NITROGEN (N)

Nitrogen Deficiency Symptoms

Nitrogen deficiency symptoms include;
– Stunted growth
– Yellowing or light green color in leaf
– Low protein content of grasses and crops
– A lack of nodules or very small whitish nodules on clovers

N is mobile in plants so deficiencies show up in the oldest
plant tissues first.

Nitrogen Sources

Nitrogen is returned to the soil via;
1.Animal manure and urine
2.Animal feed
3. Legumes
4. Nitrogenous fertilizers

Nitrogen Deficiency Symptoms

PHOSPHORUS (P)

PHOSPHORUS (P)

Phosphorus Deficiency Symptoms

Phosphorus deficiency symptoms include;
– Stunted growth, weak roots and shoots, fewer tillers
– Depressed yields
– Purple tints on small leaves
– Small, dark green leaves on mature clover plants

Phosphorus is a mobile nutrient within the plant and is
moved to the actively growing tissue, such as root tips
and growing points in the tops of plants

Phosphorus Deficiency Symptoms

Deficiency symptoms occur first in the older leaves
rather than the young ones.
It is important that plants have an adequate supply of
phosphorus to ensure recovery and regrowth after
cultivation/ harvest.

Phosphorus Sources

1.Atmospheric deposition
2.Plant residues
3.Animal manures or biosolids
4. Fertilizers
5.Parent materials

Phosphorus Deficiency Symptoms

POTASSIUM (K)

Secondary minerals & micronutrients

Calcium, Ca
Magnesium, Mg
Sulfur, S

Soil Calcium, Ca

Soil Calcium, Ca

Ca deficiency cause deformation of new leaves,
necrotic tissue of new growth and dead of buds.
Ca constitutes 1-2.5% of plant dry weight.
Ca can be improves by using Ca fertilizer, liming and
use gypsum
