Bangunan Stadthuys

Stadthuys ("dewan bandaraya" dalam bahasa Belanda) ialah sebuah binaan bersejarah
terletak bersebelahan dengan Gereja Christ di Jalan Laksamana, Melaka, Malaysia. Bangunan
ini dibina pada tahun 1650 sebagai penempatan rasmi Gabenor Belanda dan Timbalan
Gabenor, di mana struktur bangunan ini melambangkan seni rekabentuk Belanda yang halus.

Stadthuys terletak dalam tembok kubu Melaka, bertentangan dengan pintu masuk utara ke
bandar berkubu, di seberang sungai. Kubu itu sendiri meliputi kawasan yang besar sekitar
bukit St. Paul, yang menempatkan pejabat-pejabat dan gudang bagi VOC dan semua
kemudahan yang diperlukan oleh koloninya. Dinding kubu tidak lagi wujud pada hari ini
disebabkan tindakan British mengarahkan kemusnahannya sewaktu diamanahkan
melindungi harta benda Belanda di Asia dari Perancis semasa Perang Napoleon.

Stadthuys adalah sebuah kompleks besar-besaran. Dalaman bangunan ini
mempunyai dua tingkat dan ia adalah 30 meter lebar. Selain menjadi rumah
gabenor, Stadthuys juga termasuk Pejabat Setiausaha-kanak, bilik
sembahyang, ruang makan, sebuah rumah tetamu, rumah hamba, rumah
Ketua Saudagar, penjara, pejabat perdagangan, gudang, halaman dan bakeri
yang terpisah atau dipisahkan.

Bilik rekod yang luas di Stadthuys adalah sangat sesuai untuk pemeliharaan
dokumen rasmi, walaupun iklim tropika sering menjadi punca kemerosotan
yang pantas kepada kertas. Dengan meter besar dinding tebal, siling yang
tinggi dan jubin lantai yang besar, ia menyediakan suasana dalaman yang
sejuk dan nampaknya mempunyai kesan yang kering-bilik bawah tanah.

● Dengan terletaknya di Dataran Belanda, Stadthuys muncul megah

dan mengagumkan dengan tingkap-tingkap besar, dengan pintu

dan tangga. Di bahagian luar, terdapat langkan batu yang membawa

kepada dwi tangga seterusnya ke balkoni kecil yang juga boleh

diakses melalui pintu di tingkat pertama. Semasa pemerintahan

Belanda di Melaka, Stadthuys, seperti semua bangunan pentadbiran

Belanda yang lain di Asia Tenggara, ianya juga dicat putih. Melalui

perjanjian Inggeris-Belanda pada tahun 1824, Melaka telah

diserahkan oleh Belanda dan bandar tersebut menjadi tanah

jajahan British. Pada tahun 1911, British mengecat bangunan

Stadthuys dan Gereja Christ dengan warna merah salmon. Sebab-

sebab sebenar mengapa bangunan ini telah dicat merah oleh

British kini hilang ditelan zaman tetapi legenda dan teori-teori

berkaitannya masih banyak. 5

Bangunan Stadthuys kini dikenali sebagai Muzium Sejarah dan Ethnografi.

Muzium Sejarah terletak di aras 2 dan Muzium Ethnografi terletak di aras 1

Bangunan Stadthuys. Muzium Ethnografi ini memberi penekanan kepada corak

hidup masyarakat Melayu,Cina, India, Baba Nyonya ,Chetti dan juga Portugis.

Dalam muzium ini terdapt juga gambaran berkaitan dengan adat istiadat

perkahwinan, cara hidup seharian, peralatan yang digunakan, peralatan muzik.

Terdapat juga senjata-senjata , matawang zaman Belanda dalam koleksi

muzium ini. Manakala dalam muzium Sejarah pula, lukisan dan artifak yang

berkaitan dengan sejarah. Sejarah Melaka dari penubuhannya pada tahun

1400-1957 juga dipaperkan disini. Melalui ini sejarah Melaka masih dikekalkan

untuk pengetahuan orang ramai di Melaka. 6
