Commercial

We have experience in a variety of commercial developments where we have provided cost
effective and functional design solutions to meet the needs of our clients. We have provided our
services for office, hotel and commercial warehouse projects throughout the UK.

East Gateway, Stirlingshire

A two storey office development
comprising a steel frame on piled
foundations with suspended ground
floor slab and precast concrete floor
units at upper level. The practice was
commissioned to provide a full
engineering service which included
roads and drainage design.

Storm water treatment was subject to
SUDs and full use of the available
ground was made, incorporating a
pond for attenuation.

4

Mill Road Industrial Estate, West Lothian
This project consists of a 2 storey steel
frame to be used as offices.
WMA provided the design for the main
structure and also for the drainage. The
structural solution is for a simple stick built
frame with braced bays. The first floor is
formed as a composite floor with profiled
steel decking and shear studs. The external
finish is a composite cladding panel on cold
rolled secondary steelwork.
The drainage solution for this project
consists of porous paving to the car parking
areas with all surface water drainage being
discharged to a soakaway within the site.

Industrial

We have been involved in a number of industrial projects that have varied in their needs. From sound
barriers to a steel chimney to steel framed industrial warehouses and production facilities.

Grampian Foods, West Lothian
Completed December 2005

This project involved the design of structural steelwork
frames for the 2005 upgrade of food preparation and
processing buildings at Grampian Country Food Group,
Broxburn.
Seven different buildings were completed as part of this
phase of works and included refurbishment, alterations
and new build. The steel frames included clear span
portal frames, stick framed braced buildings, first floor
offices, large span lattice roof trusses on braced frames
and walkway gantries.

5

VION Halls, West Lothian
Acoustic barriers.
The industrial unit is sited in a built
up area and, following discussions
with SEPA, the local council and
neighbours, acoustic walls up to
10m in height were designed to
prevent noise reaching the nearby
residential homes

Public Sector and Health

We have had many projects in the public sector including a number of health centres and
residential developments for local housing associations. These projects have required us to
provide designs and solutions for both refurbishments and new build projects.

Meadowbank Health Centre, Stirlingshire
Forth Valley Health Trust chose to retain the existing buildings at
Meadowbank but substantially alter the ground floor layout within both
the two storey and single storey structures.
Traditionally built masonry buildings with proprietary roof trusses, the
existing first floor comprised a concrete slab on permanent steel
formwork. The temporary works were therefore extensive, made more
complex by the existence of a suspended ground floor slab over part of
the project.
New steel beams, columns and
loadbearing masonry on new
foundations were employed to
achieve the new layouts. A
new link between two storey
blocks was also designed
with a feature entrance
canopy. The practice also
designed the temporary works
for the contractor.

6

Kintillo Road, Perthshire
A new build development consisting of a
three storey timber kit flatted building and a
dozen timber kit townhouses. This
development was to meet the requirements
of the developer and local housing
association.
We were able to provide a full design
solution including reviewing geotechnical
and environmental reports, foundations and
underbuilding including ground floor slab,
checking of timber frame manufacturers
design and drawings, and full outer leaf
design and detailing.
We also provided road and drainage/SUDs
design to the approval of the local authority,
Scottish Water and SEPA.

6

Leisure

Our experience with the leisure industry extends to sports club houses, golf
starter huts and driving ranges. We have successfully provided clients with
structural solutions that meet their functional and aesthetic needs.

Broxburn United Sports Club, West Lothian

New facilities, constructed mainly as a
masonry structure with a steel framed 2-
storey section.

The project involved grouting of historical
mine working, vibro compaction soil
improvement, geophysical and geotechnical
investigation.

We were also involved with the design of
pitch, building and hard standing drainage to
meet the needs of Scottish Water.

7

Kingsfield Golf Driving Range,
West Lothian
Extensive alterations to existing
steel portal framed building
including a glazed entrance
reception, construction of
additional teaching bays and a café.
General consideration was placed
on the detailing of the alteration to
accommodate continued use of the
building during redevelopment

Residential – Single New Build Dwellings

Our experience in single dwellings is a varied one. Ranging from small traditional and timber kit
houses to a more complex combination of steel frame, masonry and concrete design.

Queens Crescent, Gleneagles
Steel framed luxury housing.
This project is formed as a 4 storey, steel
framed private residence with basement
and split levels.
Each level contains a transfer slab to
enable the open plan feel of the structure
to be achieved. There is a sunken external
courtyard at basement level with an
indoor swimming pool and gymnasium.
The focal point of the building is a 10m
high, 3m diameter aquarium with a
feature glass spiral stair around the tank.

8

Hill of Birches
This large luxury house was designed
and detailed in a mixture of steel
frames, masonry and timber kit.
Significant components of the design
include a double storey central
atrium with a glazed cupola and
cantilever staircase, a range of levels
required a variety of foundation
solutions including cavity reinforced
masonry retaining wall.

8

Residential – Flatted Developments

We have been involved with many flatted developments ranging from
three storey timber kit to eleven storey precast concrete superstructure.

St Davids, Mid Lothian

These four storey masonry built flats were
constructed as part of a larger
development for a well-known national
builder.

Our brief on this development included
timber frame, masonry and foundation
design as well as designing, detailing and
setting out the roads and drainage,
including SUDs.

9

Bogleshole Road, South Lanarkshire
Four storey timber framed flatted
developments for Carronvale Homes Ltd.
One of the projects was formed on a
piled solution.
A full design service was provided,
including ring beam and masonry design
and detailing and timber frame structure
design check.

Residential – Home Extensions and Conversions

In terms of numbers, home extensions form the largest type of applications to planning departments a
the country. We have met this demand by applying our full knowledge and expertise into provid
thorough and consistent service. We are able to provide structural surveys and inspections that enable
carry out a cost effective and structurally sound design.

Visitors Centre, West Lothian

Steel extension to the existing building.

Site investigations showed that
significant amounts of contamination
were encountered. We were required to
design a cost effective and sympathetic
foundation solution to accommodate
this, which avoided disturbing the
historic fabric of the building and
prevent contaminant leaching into an

adjacent watercourse.

protected area at the stairwell where
blockwork provides the necessary
fire resistance. A new concrete
ground bearing slab was installed
with peripheral thickening forming
the foundation to the timber frame

Sustainable Urban Drainage (SUDs)

Kintillo Road, Perthshire
The surface water runoff from this site would discharge
to a nearby watercourse. Because of this, Scottish
Water, SEPA and the local authority demanded strict
control over the SUDs.
They required the post-development runoff up to a 1 in
200 year rainfall event should match that of the pre-
development runoff rate, including a 10% allowance for
climate change. They also required sufficient treatment
of the surface water to reduce the impact of pollutants
to the receiving watercourse.
We used a combination of software packages, including
WinDES and AutoCAD to provide a solution that gained
approval from the authorities.

was designed to provide protection to the water environment by controlling the activities that e
environment including lochs, rivers, burns, coastal and ground water. This brought with it a whole new
in terms of drainage. For example, traditional road drainage infrastructure could be replaced by
receiving sheet flow from the hardstanding.
England and Wales are catching on. With the introduction of the Flood and Water Manageme
consultation in spring of this year, similar SUDs requirements will be required.

St Davids High School, Dalkieth, Scotland
A conversion of former school grounds into a housing
development with 108 plots.
The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency along with
Scottish Water required minimum stages of treatment
for the road runoff. They also required attenuation and
flow control to match that of the predevelopment runoff
flows.
The roads are drained by roadside filter trenches and
swales, replacing the conventional gullies with piped
drainage infrastructure.
To match the predevelopment runoff we designed the
appropriate flow control and attenuation measures to
keep the developers costs at a minimum.

The walls are constructed from internal
concrete twin walls and external black
concrete solid feature walls. Floors were
a mixture of precast concrete solid and
holocore slabs. Open areas were
designed with steel frames. The
penthouse flats were stepped back to
incorporate a terraced roof.
This project was included as a finalist in
the 2009 Concrete Society Awards.

Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs)

WMA are members of the recently established SIPs association and have experience in carrying out
a variety of designs for several manufacturers and processors. Most of these projects have been too
far from our Edinburgh office to provide a regular site presence and so we have developed working
relations with local engineers to respond to site specific requirements.

We have designed SIPs structures across England and as far north as Orkney, as well as several
international projects located in Germany, Australia and Angola.

Corbridge, Northumberland

Completed Jan 2007

This project involved the design of a 4
storey house with room in the roof attic
space and a large underground basement.

The superstructure is a combination of
steelwork frames and SIP (Structural
Insulated Panel) walls with timber floors.
SIPs roof panels were also used to provide
high vaulted ceilings.

The large sunroom was framed out in
steelwork to support glazed roof and wall
panels.

1

Manchester
SIPs cladding panels were used in a
multi-storey office development. The
panels and connections were designed
for high wind loads including
consideration for the safe erection
methods which would be employed by
the installation teams.
