DEAN Meet the Can you tell us a little bit about your background and what drew you to the role of Dean of Students at our university? Sure! Well, I grew up not far from here in North Palm Beach, FL. After high school I attended Palm Beach Community College and also enlisted in the Army Reserves. Eventually I transferred to the University of Florida (UF) in Gainesville and earned my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resource Development. After graduating, I was hired by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in Tallahassee, FL and worked on a leadership development program for first responders that allowed me to travel around the state facilitating the program. After three years I was offered the opportunity to be a Program Director of a new grant funded opportunity at Indian River State College (IRSC) in Fort Pierce, FL. While at Indian River, I decided to return to (UF) to earn a Masters in Business Administration as they had a Professional Cohort program that allowed me to go to school on the weekends. Not long after obtaining my MBA, I was promoted to the Dean/Provost of the Public Service Education Division at IRSC. For nine years I led this Division, its programs, and operations of the Treasure Coast Public Safety Training Complex. It was a transitional period in my career as I had experienced many new lessons as a leader in higher education. After having worked in higher education for 13 years, I decided to diversify my experience and in 2021 I joined Amazon Logistics as an Operations Manager. In this role I oversaw the facilitation of one of Florida’s largest delivery stations in a 120,000sq/ft facility in Port St. Lucie, FL. Each day we would process and deliver anywhere from 40,0000 – 70,000 packages to area customers. After about two years serving in this role, I had a strong desire to return to higher education as I missed being in a learning community. As I looked through the plethora of positions at institutions of higher education, one in particular caught my attention – Dean of Students – Keiser University Flagship Campus. “Wow”, I thought – now here is an interesting opportunity. I reflected on the many experiences I had at IRSC and most of my work was academic and operational – but I always enjoyed the time I spent with students. While at Amazon, I found myself mentoring many of the workers and those that new about my time in higher ed would jokingly refer to me as “the professor.” Having grown up in Florida, I was familiar with Keiser University and was excited to see they had established a residential campus with students from around the world. I didn’t hesitate to apply, as I knew this where I wanted to be and the work I wanted to do. A few months later, here we are, and it’s an honor to be here. Interview to Dean of Students, Dr. Evan Berry 6 K e i s e r U n i v e r s i t y A l u m n i

What excites you the most about joining our institution, and what goals do you hope to accomplish in your role? The Dean of Students, as I interpret it, is a unique role at Universities and Institutions. In this position, I have the privilege of supporting the student body through all the things outside of the classroom. College campuses are communities. Students decide on an institution in many cases for a program of study, however they are also evaluating the campus life. For many, myself included, we reflect on our college experience as a time of personal growth. It is exciting to help frame this through the activities, events, programs, organizations, amenities, and facilities we offer to our students. As the Dean of Students at Keiser University Flagship Campus, I hope to have an impact on the student experience. I would like to discover what it is that our students desire to make our campus most fulfilling. I envision a robust first year experience for incoming freshman where there are many opportunities for them to socialize, organize and join or create student led clubs and organizations. I’d also like to develop Keiser University Flagship student leadership opportunities with our academic team to offer mentorship experiences with our business community. I would also like to work with our admissions, career, and alumni teams to create enrollment growth and return to campus opportunities for our alumni through themed events. With growth comes opportunity, and a longterm opportunity I see is a dedicated student union facility that is the epicenter of student life and activities outside of the classroom. What are the major challenges currently faced by students in higher education, and how do you plan to tackle them? I recently came across Tom Hanks' commencement speech at Harvard University, where he emphasized the ethical considerations, we should all have regarding our lives and contributions to society. This got me thinking about the interesting and challenging aspects of higher education. As the Dean of Students, I believe it is crucial to address these issues because our society has become focused on instant gratification—getting degrees quickly, seeking rapid promotions—often overshadowing the significance of learning and personal growth. To counter this trend, I believe it is vital for me, in my role as Dean of Students, to create programs and informal opportunities that allow students to develop and flourish on a personal level, discovering themselves in the process. Looking back at my own undergraduate experience, I realize that it was a time of immense personal growth. Therefore, it becomes imperative to prioritize the student experience beyond just the confines of the classroom. For example, while grades and learning outcomes are important, I also believe that students can gain invaluable skills in team building, relationship-building, and independence during their college journey. By actively listening to students and understanding their support needs, we can provide them with the essential building blocks of community and personal growth. It is not solely about obtaining degrees, but also about fostering a transformative experience and creating opportunities for them to thrive. In today's job market, employers are placing increased emphasis on soft skills and experiences rather than simply a college degree. As an educational institution, we must ensure that our students have ample opportunities to develop these skills outside the classroom. By offering leadership programs and encouraging participation in extracurricular activities, we can equip our students to be well-rounded individuals who excel not only academically, but also in various other areas that will make them valuable employees. In essence, we want our students to not just write a good resume but also demonstrate their abilities through practical experience. There is a significant distinction between memorizing knowledge and gaining meaningful experiences. How do you plan to collaborate with faculty, staff, and alumni to create a holistic environment for student development and success? The role of the Dean of Students is truly exceptional, providing a broad perspective on numerous aspects of the college community. In my capacity, I work closely alongside valuable staff, including Dr. Peluso, the Dean of Academics, as well as the college president, athletic director, and financial aid advisor. Collaboration is integral to this role, as it relies heavily on synergies with other areas. What message or advice would you like to convey to our alumni community, based on your experiences and insights as the new Dean of Students? Keiser University has a rich history of over 40 years, but what I didn’t know until I did my research is that this campus existed. Originally Keiser has always been a commute professional based program and it was developed because not everyone had the time or was able to live in a college campus to be able to receive their education. However, now that we have 20+ campuses around the states we have created a residential campus. So now we are the campus that ultimately has the 4-year experience where you can live, participate, play sport and do things like that nature. To our esteemed alumni, I want to extend an invitation: Come and check out what we have created. Perhaps you invested four or five years of your life earning a degree at Keiser University. Well, now we have a vibrant campus with a mascot, thrilling sports games, and even national trophies to our name. We organize special events and weekends dedicated to celebrating our community. So, my message is to reconnect and see how you can contribute. Every individual, at some point in their career, contemplates what they can give back. It may be financial support, mentorship, teaching, or coaching. Whatever form it takes, our flagship campus at Keiser University serves as the perfect platform to engage and participate. Currently, we have approximately 1,500 students from around the world attending Keiser Flagship, and they are eager to learn and grow. They would greatly benefit from hearing from, engaging with, and connecting with our accomplished alumni who have made significant strides in their own lives. So, I encourage our alumni to explore the possibilities and consider being a part of our thriving Keiser community once again. Together, we can make a lasting impact and provide invaluable support and guidance to the next generation of students who are eagerly seeking inspiration from those who have walked the path before them. As the Dean of Students, my primary responsibility is to be a staunch advocate for the student experience. I strive to guide students in navigating within the boundaries of our community's rules while also encouraging personal growth, individuality, and enjoyment. Importantly, this position allows me to foster unity by bringing people together. When I decided to take on this role, it was evident that other staff members were genuinely eager to collaborate, which reinforced my enthusiasm for the position. A vital aspect of fulfilling this role effectively is being a skilled communicator. When making decisions, I consider the individuals who will be affected and proactively involve them from the outset. By doing so, I aim to ensure that all stakeholders feel heard and valued. The Dean of Students plays a pivotal role in facilitating connections and building relationships across various departments. Working closely with the Dean of Academics, we can uphold academic excellence while also prioritizing the overall well-being of our students. Collaboration with the college president, athletic director, and financial aid advisors allows us to enhance student services, making resources and support readily available. Additionally, I recognize the immense value that alumni bring to the student experience. By engaging with them, we can establish mentorship programs and networking opportunities that empower current students to make informed career choices and forge meaningful connections beyond their time at the college. In essence, as the Dean of Students, I embrace the opportunity to create a cohesive and supportive college community, where students can flourish academically, personally, and as they prepare for their professional futures. By fostering collaboration and effective communication, we can address challenges and nurture an environment that promotes holistic student development and success. 8 K e i s e r U n i v e r s i t y A l u m n i Figure 2 Dean Berry presenting to the Guardians for New Futures Annual Child Summit at Indian River State College. one Keiser University student, this impressive accomplishment was emphasized by the obstacles she had to overcome along the way. ne of the greatest honors a student can achieve during their academic career is becoming a valedictorian. It requires immense dedication, focus, and hard work. For Despite being a slow learner as a kid, Audrey refused to let her teachers’ criticisms bring her down. Instead, she became competitive and strove to prove them wrong. This drive to succeed was also fueled by her desire to be as good as her brother, who was gifted and a constant source of comparison. In addition to these academic challenges, Audrey faced personal struggles as well. She was bullied and mugged during her school years, which forced her to learn how to defend herself and build emotional resilience. Her parents' divorce also had a profound impact on her life. However, these experiences only made Audrey stronger and more determined to succeed. When she began college, her competitive spirit kicked in, as she wanted to give her absolute best. But college brought many new challenges. She moved 5,000 miles away from home to a different country and culture, adjusting to a new way of life. She struggled at first, feeling out of place as a "nerd" in a school full of athletes. However, she eventually found her niche and thrived academically. Audrey's mother played a crucial role in her success as well. As a single mom, she worked tirelessly to provide Audrey and her brother with a good education and happy life. Despite the challenges they faced, Audrey's mother never let them feel like they were missing out on anything. She was also an inspiration to Audrey, embodying toughness, resilience, and unconditional love. O Meet Our 2023 Co-Valedictorian, Audrey Chouraqui

All these experiences, both positive and negative, contributed to Audrey's success as a valedictorian. She learned to be competitive and resilient in the face of criticism and adversity. She also had a dedicated support system in her mother, who inspired her to be the best version of herself. Despite the challenges she faced, Audrey never gave up on her dreams and worked tirelessly to achieve them. In addition to her academic excellence, Audrey's contributions to the university's growth and development were invaluable. Her leadership, dedication, and hard work exemplified the university's values of excellence, community, and service, and inspired others to follow her. She was the founder and president of the women's club, where she created a safe and supportive space for female students to connect, learn, and grow. Her leadership and dedication to the club's mission helped attract new members and increased the club's visibility on campus. As a result, the women's club became a significant contributor to the university's culture of inclusivity and diversity. Similarly, her role as the president of the sustainability club helped raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices on campus. Her initiatives and events encouraged students to become more environmentally conscious and helped reduce the university's carbon footprint. Audrey's involvement with the student government association also helped shape the university's policies and programs. As the secretary, she played a critical role in organizing student events, communicating with faculty and staff, and advocating for student interests. Her leadership and collaborative skills helped create a positive and productive relationship between the student body and the administration. In addition to her involvement with clubs and organizations, Audrey also worked parttime for the school and was a member of the tennis team. Despite having such a busy schedule, Audrey was able to excel academically and maintain a great GPA (Grade Point Average). Her involvement with the university allowed her to develop important skills, such as leadership, communication, and time management, that made her a well-rounded and successful student. Audrey's determination paid off in the end. When the time came to choose a valedictorian for the Class of 2023, it was no surprise that she was the top choice. Her tireless work ethic, unrelenting ambition, and unwavering commitment to excellence had set her apart from the crowd. Audrey was awarded Valedictorian not only for her 4.0 GPA, but because of her amazing community engagement and proven ability to be a scholar campus wide. "Audrey was awarded Valedictorian not only for her 4.0 GPA, but because of her amazing community engagement and proven ability to be a scholar campus wide." “She was continually active in several student organizations, but as the Student Government Advisor she came to me and volunteered to take over the tremendous role of Secretary for the organization when we lost our secretary mid-year. In the 5 years I have been the Advisor she has been the best SGA Secretary to which I will now use her work to train Secretaries going forward. Her most remarkable trait was by far her willingness to help with whatever was happening. For over 45 years, Keiser University has been committed to producing the critical talent required to address Florida’s workforce needs and ensuring our graduates are prepared to make a positive impact in their communities. This commitment is evident through Keiser’s role as the largest producer of nurses in Florida and our ranking as the No. 1 school in the country for Social Mobility by U.S. News and World Report. To continue our service to the community and our students, we see an incredible opportunity to change lives by building a new aquatic center on our Flagship Campus.
