Thelma the Tooth Thug
Forward
This story is meant to help with pronunciation of the “th” sound. While English actually
has two different sounds for “th” (compare the tongue movement for “this” and “that”),
they have a similar sound and most native speakers of English are unaware that there are
two forms.
The words are short in order to encourage students to sound them out and practice
pronunciation. I have narrated the story as well, so be sure to listen at

Thelma the Tooth Thug
There is a tooth fairy named Thelma.
Thelma thinks of a thick throne of teeth.
Thelma does the math.
“I need one thousand teeth for my throne,” she thinks.
Thelma says, “Don’t throw your teeth away. I’ll give you a
thick coin if the teeth are healthy and under a cloth.”
Mothers and fathers tell their children to put
their teeth under a cloth when they sleep.
Thelma flies from north to south collecting those teeth.
Thelma can’t find enough healthy teeth –
too few children brush their teeth.
Thelma thinks she can’t wait, she uses her
tooth fairy strength to take teeth early.
The tooth fairy police comes and says “Thelma, that thing is
wrong!” Thus, Thelma becomes a tooth thug.
