SOME TIPS ON SECTION A…

1. LENGTH OF THE ESSAY:
v Do not spend too much time on Section A.
vSpend only 45 minutes on it.
v Do not elaborate the given main ideas TOO MUCH.
v Use the ‘1+2’ formula; 1 main ideas followed by 2
elaborations.

v Do examiners really count the words in our scripts/essays?
Do you think they have time to have another headache? Reading piles of essay is enough of a torture for them. Their
experience could tell if you didn’t write enough.

v Can I memorize an essay for section B?
If you plan to fail the paper. Yes, please. Examiners will analyze and compare the consistency of the scripts in Section A & B.
They know one when they see one.

v How can I be a good writer?
Read a lot. We need you to have a broad spectrum of knowledge and vocabulary in writing a good script of essay. Maturity
of thought and creative lines in writing will amuse them.

v Is it okay if I ‘read’ the dictionary for vocab?
Many teachers still read online dictionary and note good vocabulary to this day. Proudly, I am one of those nerds.

v What do you recommend for good reading materials?
Flash news on social media. Keep updated with social issues around you. They could be great materials for idea and
inspiration in writing. 2020 really is the epitome of many unexpected twists and turns in life.

v SPM is few months away; Can you teach me so that I can get A in my English?
Manage your files and notes. Great organizing skill is part of the strategy to ace the paper. Compile notes and sample of
answers as many as you can. Practice doing your own exam. Also, it’s never too late to compile all the vocabulary and
phrases to be used in writing.
