COVER STORY
Coined in the 20th century by renowned American image: Taylor Howes
Architect Louis Sullivan, the phrase 'form follows
function' was first published in an article published in
1896 titled “The Tall Office Building Artistically
considered”. Sullivan also popularly referred to as
the “father of sky scrappers' points that that the style
of architecture designs should reflect its purpose. It
implied the simplification of design by designing
buildings without unnecessary decoration. But
Sullivan didn't reflect this implication of his infamous
phrase, as Cleary seen in his own work.
However, when implied in Interior Design, form
follows function basically means that the end result of
a designed space should revolve around its function.
All spaces have presumed functions, but the true
function of a space is defined by the lifestyle and
habits of the people using it. Efficient, well
implemented design should be centred on people.
While it's part of the human nature to be drawn
towards beautiful things, it's important to keep in mind
that form should follow function when it comes to
designing interior spaces.
One could go through a store and pick up every
stunning accent piece available, but when they are all
brought together without a couch, a table or any other
important item, they become clutter that generally
serve little or no purpose at all. When designing,
Interior designers should aim to create a space that is
efficient and at the same time appealing. In other
words a designer should always put the following into
consideration.

COVER STORY
Interior design
changes overtime
An interesting characteristic of interior design is how
dynamic it can get. Design schemes are usually subjected
to change and for this reason, it's important to ensure that
function within any space, holds a primary concern. Unlike
design, function is much harder to change once it has been
done. Imagine trying to move permanent wall structures
because you discovered your lifestyle functions better in an
open space rather than the initial valley- in layout you
thought you wanted.
Creating spaces that are mostly focused on accent pieces
and design will most likely leave you feeling over whelmed
at the prospect of having to switch out detail décor, and
fitting into an ill-designed space.
Whether you are working on interior design or exterior
design, you should stick to function first!
