INTRODUCTION TO PAPER 2
WRITING ( CEFR )

• This paper 2 will have 60 marks in total.
• However, the total weightage is still at 25% in the overall SPM English paper.
• The overall time allocated for paper 2 is 90 minutes.
• This paper has 3 parts.
a) Part 1 – Writing a short note or email in less than 80 words. 20 marks.
b) Part 2 – Directed writing in 125-150 words. 20 marks.
c) Part 3 – There are 3 questions. You’ll need to choose 1 essay only to write in

200-250 words.20 marks. Types of essays: Article, Report, Review and
Story(Narrative)

MARKING STANDARD ( PEMARKAHAN )

1. CONTENT ( 5 MARKS ) ( ISI PENTING )

• Content are your points in your writing. ( isi utama dalam karangan)
• How do examiner gives marks? (bagaimana pemarkahan dibuat?)
a. Make sure the points given are answering the questions. (pastikan isi utama

anda menjawab soalan yang diberikan)
b. Next, examiner underlines the RELEVANT points that answer the question and allocate (

1 mark ) for each point given. ( Bagi setiap isi utama yang berkaitan dengan soalan akan
digariskan dan diberikan (1 markah).
c. Lastly, examiner counts the total points given. ( Pemeriksa akan mengira markah
keseluruhan isi utama yang telah diberikan )
d. Example: 1 point relevant = 1 mark

2 point relevant = 2 marks
3 point relevant = 3 marks
4 point relevant = 4 marks
5 point relevant = 5 marks ( successfully answered the question )

2. LANGUAGE ( 5 MARKS ) ( GAYA BAHASA )

• Examiner checks for grammatical errors, tenses errors and spelling errors. (kesalahan tatabahasa
(tenses) dan kesalahan ejaan adalah dinilai )

• How examiner allocate marks? ( Bagaimana pemeriksa memberikan markah?)
a. Check for Tenses errors. If there are no errors, examiner can award 3 marks. (tiada kesalahan “tenses”

3 markah akan diberikan)
b. Check for Grammar errors. If there are no errors, examiner can award 3 marks. (tiada kesalahan

tatabahasa 3 markah akan diberikan)
c. Check for Spelling errors. If there are no errors, examiner can award 3 marks. (tiada kesalahan ejaan 3

markah akan diberikan)
• Minimum marks = 1 mark ( if there are too many errors )
• Good use of vocabulary = 1 bonus mark is given.

3. COMMUNICATIVE ACHIEVEMENT ( 5 MARKS )
( PENCAPAIAN KOMUNIKATIF )

• It refers to the flow of an essay. (Jalan cerita / plot penceritaan )
• Whether the essay is cohesive or not. The relationship between ideas is clear and well

connected. (kesinambungan jalan cerita masih berkait rapat dengan tajuk dan tidak
menyimpang)
• How examiner allocate marks? ( penilaian markah )
a. Look for “Linking Words” . (penggunaan Kata Hubung)
b. Each “Linking Words” indicates the flow of each point and if used appropriately
“Linking Words” can be given marks. (Jika Kata Hubung digunakan dengan betul dimana
ianya menghubungkan isi utama dan isi kecil, penggunaan Kata Hubung boleh diberikan
markah )
c. Example: 1 linking word with proper flow = 1 mark

2 linking word with proper flow = 2 marks
3 linking word with proper flow = 3 marks
4 linking word with proper flow = 4 marks
5 linking word with proper flow = 5 marks
d. Linking Words show “Flow between Point”. If there are no “Linking Words” used,
meaning no proper flow of points. Mark is = 1 mark.

4. ORGANISATION ( 5 MARKS )
(SUSUNAN / STRUKTUR KARANGAN )

• Refer to how well is the overall essay organized. Coherence = well organised/ systematic.

• How well the points are organized. ( bagaimana isi utama disusun dalam karangan )

• How examiner allocate marks?
a. introduction ( Pengenalan ) = 1 mark
b. ending / conclusion ( Penutup )= 1 mark
c. points are arranged accordingly in one paragraph and has more Linking Words (Isi penting
di bahagikan mengikut perenggan dan penggunaan Kata Hubung bagi setiap isi
penting)= 3 marks
d. If there are no “Linking Words” meaning the points are not coherence. = 0 marks
d. Total is 5 marks.
e. Minimum mark = 1 mark ( as long as students write their answer ) = 1 markah diberikan
asalkan calon menulis karangan.
