INTRODUCTION TO CREATIVE WRITING: PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT
Building a Creative Practice

While there are many different ways to answer these questions, this class will offer some
possibilities. In this class we will think about and practice writing prose and poetry. We will read
prose and poetry to frame our thinking about writing, and we will complete interactive and
experiential writing prompts to get our words on the page. Our writing will be rooted in an
observation practice, where we take notes everyday (even when we’re not in class), paying
deliberate attention to things we might normally overlook. We will also think about how we are
reacting to and thinking about those things. These notes will form the basis for our writing. From
these notes, we will then compose, workshop, and edit our notes into polished works of creative
writing.

Robert Balun received his MFA in Creative Writing from CCNY. He has been teaching creative writing
and literature courses at The City College for 7 years. His poems have appeared in numerous literary
journals.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT SOLID SHORTS

While novels tend to rule the best-seller lists, a good short story can be just as impactful and is often the
first step in propelling writers to the next level. This course is intended for newbies, long-time writers,
and anyone in between. For anyone who wants to develop and complete a great short story; a
memorable narrative that features compelling characters with captivating voices and dialogue, an
enticing premise, invigorating plot, and significant themes. Exploring character and plot development,
pacing, setting, dialogue and tone, through readings, development, workshopping and revision, students
will create a polished, solid, original short story they can be proud to send off for publication.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROCESS SERVER

PREREQUISITE: High School Diploma or GED/HSE
Under New York City law, individuals are now required to pass an exam in order to obtain or to renew a
Process Server individual license. This license is required of all individuals performing services within the
city of New York.

Process serving refers to the procedure of serving summonses, notifications, and other relevant documents
that provide legal notice of a court action, in accordance with due process requirements. This is done in an
effort to exercise jurisdiction, or legal authority, over the person served, to enable that person to respond
to the proceeding before a court, administrative body or other tribunal. Thus, a process server delivers
legal documents in accordance with the process dictated by the laws of the city of New York.

This 8-hour seminar prepares students for the New York Process Server individual exam. The seminar
covers topics such as all City, State, and Federal regulations that a process server must know in order to
serve papers legally and properly. This course will include how to locate recipients, how to prepare
affidavits of service, what records are required, bond requirements, what licensing fees are required, how
to provide proof of proper service, and what electronic device rules come into play.

Upon successfully passing the New York City Department of Consumer Affairs exam and fulfilling city
requirements, a licensed process server can work for themselves. There is no educational requirement or
testing to register for this class.

"This class is excellent! Professors are accessible, supportive and provide
numerous resources to help reinforce our learning of many legal topics.
One of the professors helped me obtain an internship in a law office and
I am gaining real world experience. Not only is the tuition a great value,
but we also learned how to complete numerous legal documents, so I now

have a portfolio of work the will position me as a stand-out Paralegal
Candidate. Thank you CPS!

design or who are seeking to develop portfolio materials for college or graduate school applications. No
prior experience in architecture, design, or art is necessary. Participants have dedicated workspace in one
of the light-filled Spitzer School studios 7 days per week. Students utilize our library, digital design and
fabrication labs, and model shop to develop projects, in addition to our digital cameras and computer labs
to document them for their portfolios. Areas of emphasis include hand craft, digital fabrication,

COURSE CANCELLATION

Continuing and Professional Studies courses are subject to a minimum enrollment. We reserve the right to
cancel any class that does not meet the minimum enrollment required. If a course is cancelled, students
may receive a full refund or speak to staff for additional options.

CLASSROOM LOCATION

Classroom information will be posted in Shepard Hall, Room 2, on the first day of
class.

TEXTBOOK/MATERIALS INFORMATION

Books and other materials are not included in the cost of a course unless otherwise noted. Textbook
requirements are printed on all receipts.

REFUND POLICY

If CPS cancels a course, a 100% refund, including the registration fee, will be given. If a student cancels, a
refund request must be submitted in writing (via email or in person) five business days prior to the first
day of class. If the student withdraws at least five business days prior to the first day of class a 100%
refund will be given (less the $25 registration fee).
There are no refunds on one or two day workshops. Non-attendance does not constitute a withdrawal or
request for refund.
A refund takes approximately 4-5 weeks after the Office of Continuing and Professional Studies receives
your request. Refunds are credited to the card charged or issued by check to the payer of record. Money
orders and business check payments are refunded via a check mailed four to five weeks after a course
withdrawal or cancellation. Refunds are not given after the first class session.
