6 JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH UTARA 1st Issue Greetings to all JCI Members and Stakeholders, Today marks a significant moment in our journey towards unity and positive change. As we launch our 2024 Quarter 1 newsletter, we are filled with hope, determination, and a shared vision for a better tomorrow. Our theme, “Unity - Inspire the Next,” encapsulates the essence of our mission - to harness the power of togetherness to drive meaningful progress in our communities and beyond. For the past 5 months, we had achieved a lot with all the dedicated leaders. We pleased to informed that JCI Malaysia Area North Convention (ANC), which is the first time ever organized by Area Committees had been successfully hosted. Special thanks to all 2024 Local Presidents of Area North that motivated members to join in this ANC. We had an increase of more than 40% of the members of the Area North to join compared to previous years registration. We had a total of 281 participants including registered delegates/ sponsors/ helpers/ volunteers that gave their very best to do their part. At the heart of this unity lies a profound commitment to our planet and its well-being. It is no secret that our Earth faces numerous challenges, from climate change to biodiversity loss. Amidst these trials, one issue stands out as both emblematic and urgent: single-use plastic bottles. These ubiquitous containers, while seemingly convenient, exact a heavy toll on our environment. Every year, millions of metric tons of plastic waste find their way into our oceans, rivers, and landfills, wreaking havoc on ecosystems and wildlife. The cycle of production, consumption, and disposal perpetuates a harmful narrative - one that we must rewrite, together. GREETINGS FROM JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH! Introducing Our st Newsletter: Unity in Action unity empowers us to enact change, one choice at a time. By embracing sustainable alternatives & rejecting single-use plastic bottles, we can collectively reduce our ecological footprint and pave the way for a cleaner, greener future.

12 JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH UTARA 1st Issue FEATURED STORY TLC Houseware is founded back in 1967 by my grandfather. His started his trading business in Georgetown, Penang, collecting and recycling scrap metal. When my dad took over in 1976, he switched path to selling sundries in the local market and eventually scale up his business by importing and distributing kitchenwares throughout Malaysia. I was ‘brainwashed’ by my dad that i am the one to succeed his business and after graduated from high school, I was glad that I chose to pursue my Bachelors in Accounting, which i now find it crucial and beneficial for my business. I went straight into the business after graduation and started to work my way up in the company. First few months of training as a warehouse assistant not only trained me on how to move heavy cartons of goods around manually without twisting my waist, it also made me realised how rigorous and taxing it is to work under this environment where one is so prone to injuries in manual labour. After that, I have also switched among a few departments, ranging from sales, purchasing and also accounts. It took me around 8 years only did I start to get involve in management decisions and all these years of working in various departments provide me valuable insights on the critical factors for each department and laid a foundation for me to further improve them. HOW I TRANSFORM A 57 YEARS OLD CHINAMAN BUSINESS

JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH UTARA 1 13 st Issue In 2017 when I was in the management team which comprised of my dad, me, my sister and my cousin, I realised that for the business to further expand, I cannot rely solely on three of us while my dad will be retiring soon. I personally would also like to make my life easier by delegating the decision-making responsibilities to my team instead of holding them on as how a Chinaman business is. So, I made two major decisions. One is to look for a coach who can guide me through the process of transformation of my business which eventually I found one. Another is to start expanding my team, ensuring that I have a basic management team, comprising of key departments, e.g. Sales, Marketing, Finance, Procurement & HR. I went through a year of learning the ropes on how to incorporate best management practices into every aspects of my business, which are Customer Relationship Management, Supply Chain Management, Human Resource Management & Financial Management. Relax brand is created by my dad way before the year 2000 and only was it registered in 2004. During that time, he was very focus on building the business where he would often be back home after dinner hours and what is left at the dinner table is cold meals especially cold soup. He surveyed through the local market, but he could not find a thermal soup jar which can keep the soup warm for hours yet at an affordable price. He saw this business opportunity and started to source for manufacturers abroad where eventually the first batch of thermal products started to enter our local market back in the 2000s. The Relax logo design came from the idea of wanting our customers to purchase our products with a relaxing, fun and free of hassle experience. That is why our initial Relax logo resembled a windsurfing action. When I took over the brand, I wanted to make the products look more appealing and fun instead of the conventional stainless steel appearance. There was when I started to incorporate different colours and different designs to give them a more vibrant and fresh look. For us, we perceive ourselves not as a water bottle and thermal flasks supplier, but as an enabler for our customers to realise the lifestyle experience that they have always wanted where they have full confidence in showcasing their uniqueness & distinctiveness. Our products are carefully curated to be part of their lifestyle in achieving their dreams while inspiring others and contributing to others. Realise the lifestyle experience that they have always wanted where they have full confidence in showcasing their uniqueness & distinctiveness.

14 JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH UTARA 1st Issue One of my most favourite product line is the Endangered Species Water Bottles. It all started with a thought of how I can contribute towards the community and environment. When I realised that Malaysia has a handful of very amazing and wonderful endangered species which we as Malaysians need to protect and conserve, eg Malaysian Sunbear, Borneon Pygmy Elephant, Malayan Tiger, i immediately came up with this series of product, hoping to raise awareness of the public while chipping in towards the conservation of these magnificent creatures. Be bold and be yourself. Embrace yourself in a continuous journey of learning and discovery. Finally, shine and create an positive impact towards the community. Another line of product is the Born to Shine series of thermal flasks. I believe that everyone is born unique and special so I created this series to encourage and promote the uniqueness and confidence that each of us has shown. We collaborated with A Kind Man podcast channel to launch this series of products featuring 31 outstanding women entrepreneurs from various fields to recognise and applaud them on their showcase of entrepreneurship and also the empowerment of their own lives and others around them. I called upon a few NGOs who are currently putting their best to protect these wildlife and we worked out a plan whereby Relax customers can also contribute a part towards the conservation effort just by purchasing this series of products where a certain amount of money will be channeled to them. I sincerely hope that these animals are able to survive and populate in the wild so that our kids are able to see them out there instead of in the museum or in the zoo.

JCI MALAYSIA AREA NORTH UTARA 1 15 st Issue What challenges did u face during the transformation and how did you overcome that? Huge amount of resistance, Continuous encouragement, balance with the sense of empathy HUGE AMOUNT OF RESISTANCE- I’ve been with the company for 2 and a half years now, I shifted fully into sales a year in. I started with sales & marketing ie; in my opinion I need not “take responsibility” since marketing is just getting likes & followers. But not when I shifted to sales, all of a sudden everything is number driven, numbers will tell if I’m doing my job well or not. For 1 whole year, I resisted. Lack of sales, clients, results were very evident. I could no longer hide in the comfort of marketing. CONTINUOUS ENCOURAGEMENT - For that 1 year I did not produce the result I’ve promised, not once ever Darren has raised his voice, scold, rush me on my sales. There’s definitely discomfort every week we had a 1-1 sales meeting, I’m confronted with these numbers I far from reaching with a series of “I don’t know”. To get to today, his patience and gentle guidance, what are the steps by steps I could take, & he took it with me alongside to reach the ideal sales we’re looking at. Through out trail and error, a whole year mind you. We found key analytics to finally scale my numbers. BALANCE WITH THE SENSE OF EMPATHY - For me, talking to Darren, voicing out issues have been rather easy. Knowing that I’m in a space of non-judgement. He gives stern advices after understanding and assessing the situations. I have grown a lot as a person when it comes to handling sales, I’ve become responsible and also understanding clients with a sense of empathy mirroring Darren’s approach. We aspire to become one of the leading fashion lifestyle brand where we will continue to focus on delivering values to our customers & our community through our products and services while in line with our direction towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals set by UN. On the meantime, we are also exploring opportunities abroad where we believe we can also expand our influence and contribution to other areas in the world.
