Smiles from Heaven

S hortly after Marvin and Andrea
Gordon let us know they would be
donating property for our new synagogue, in
a quiet side conversation Marvin looked at me
and said, “I think my mother in heaven is real-
ly smiling right now.”  I couldn’t agree more,
but what I also saw was how much Marvin
himself was smiling – how happy it made him to do this with her in mind.  That’s a special
kind of happiness.  It is the joy that comes from doing good, from living the values taught
by parents, teachers and community, from a deserved sense of pride in doing that which is
right.  Living this way isn’t always easy, often it is hard but it has the power to nourish a
person’s entire being with the enduring warmth of spiritual satisfaction.

A well-known lesson from the Torah speaks about how best to pass on life guidance
from one generation to the next: “Teach them diligently to your children.  Speak about
them at home and when away, morning and night.”  In this passage, “diligently” means
“time and time again”.  In other words, values, ethics and morals are not taught like infor-
mation and skills are taught in school, rather they are taught through our interactions
with those we love and respect, through the example they set and the choices they make
as they live their lives day in and day out.  Clearly Marvin and Andrea were profoundly
influenced by wonderful role models.

In addition, Andrea and Marvin are quite aware of how lucky and blessed they are.
Marvin’s grandfather, Sam Shoolman, (zichrono l’vracha – may his memory be for a bless-
ing) was the beneficiary of the help given to him by his brother Max.  Now so many years
later, in that same spirit of helpfulness, the Gordon family has blessed this community by
making Beth Shalom of the Blue Hills’ spiritual center possible.  They know that when we
come into this world we are the beneficiaries of the deeds done by our predecessors and
that before we move on, it is on us to be benefactors for those who will follow.

Todah Rabbah – Thank you so very much for giving us reason to smile too,

Rabbi B.

Home at Last

It’s such a pleasure to be welcoming you
to our celebratory gala where we have
the wonderful opportunity to formally honor
and thank Marvin and Andrea Gordon and the
Shoolman and Gordon families for their dona-
tion of this beautiful land upon which we now
stand. Officially celebrating the opening of our
new synagogue with you and them brings us more joy than you can imagine!

It has been a long and winding road to get here, with many obstacles and curves, but
in the end, we’ve arrived in the right place in the right moment in our history, and we
couldn’t be happier. We’ve learned so much about ourselves along the way, and have
strengthened our resolve to preserve and grow the Jewish population in and around the
Blue Hills area. So many townspeople and organizations have provided encouragement,
advice, resources and support throughout our journey, including Marvin and Andrea--
and we can’t thank them enough for that. They had a vision for this property and a pas-
sion for working with our team to develop a pragmatic plan that met all of our needs. The
end result surely proves that.

This town’s vibrant and strong interfaith community has also been so supportive
throughout our “wandering years,” and has helped to keep us whole and grounded. It
continually strives for Milton to be an accepting and progressive environment for our con-
gregants and people of all faiths. We feel so fortunate to be part of it.

When we began the process of searching for our new home years ago, we were told that
it was going to be an exhilarating process. Having now completed it, I can truly say those
were very accurate and wise words. It has been enriching, empowering, educational,
enlightening and frankly exhausting. And I wouldn’t change it for anything!

Many thanks again to Marvin and Andrea, the Gordon and Shoolman families, and
all of you, our wonderful supporters. You have helped us achieve our goal and fulfill our
dream of building a beautiful new Jewish spiritual and religious home.

Enjoy the evening!

What is Sisterhood?

We are a group of dedicated
women who enrich the lives
of one another and provide essential services
for the wider synagogue community.  We’re all
different types, at different stages in our lives…
married, single, divorced, partnered, widowed,
new moms, sport moms, day school moms,
religious school moms, empty nesters, work-
ing women, students, seniors, retirees.  But there is one fundamental thing that binds us
together… a history that gives us an undeniable sense of connection.  Join Sisterhood and
be part of an influential, dynamic, and vital part of our synagogue.  Come socialize with
warm and caring women! Somewhere among our many activities and projects there’s a
place just right for you!  Enrich your life with the joys of friendship and service to others.
Have fun with the women of the Sisterhood.

After arriving in Boston, Father (Sam Shoolman) wasn’t feeling
well. There was so much pollution, he couldn’t take it. The doctors
advised Father to move to the country. So Uncle Max sent out his
engineer, and he said: We’ve got to find a house, and it’s got to be something
pretty nice – a farm, so my brother can till the land and be in the open, the
way he’s used to. And it’s got to be not too far from Boston, about eight miles
would be ideal. And it was just about eight miles from Boston, in Milton.

Marvin and Andrea’s philanthropy to
Congregation Beth Shalom reflects their
partnership in giving back to the community,
and their family’s leg-
acy of civic leadership.
Marvin’s mother, Anna
Gordon, helped found
Temple Shalom of
Milton. Andrea, a long-
time Milton Library
Trustee, advanced
building the new
library. Marvin served
on the Milton Board of
Selectmen and School
Committee, among
other volunteer roles. His sister, Ruth Hiner-
feld, was President of the National League of
Women Voters, moderated the 1976 Presi-
dential debates, and has championed ethical
and fair governance at international, nation-
al, and local levels. The Shoolman Family
Scholarship at Milton High School recognizes
student excellence in community service.

We celebrate tonight in honor of Andrea
and Marvin Gordon, and the Shoolman fam-
ily legacy.
