Muay Thai is a combat martial art dated back several hundred
years in Thailand. Nowadays, it has become a professional combat
sport which is practiced not only in Thailand but also in large parts
of the world. People who come to visit Thailand will never miss a
chance to watch Muay Thai fights. Besides, there are more and
more foreigners express their interest in practicing Muay Thai. All
of those facts make us so proud of this traditional sport. With a
view to enhancing your confidence to introduce Muay Thai to your
foreign friends, we would like to offer you this pocket-sized book-
let as a vocabulary notebook with lively illustrations. We hope it will
support your studying as best as possible.

ในประเทศไทย มกั จะไมพลาดโอกาสที่จะไปชมการแขงขนั มวยไทย นอกจากนัน้

There is no real evident show the origin of Thai boxing.
Although the bona fide appears on the journal during
the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1351 – 1767). Thai boxing was
seen as the gratify sport for the Kings. Civilians who
impressed the rulers of the Kingdom with the art of their
martial combat would be granted a position in the gov-
ernment organization and advance their career.

After the King Rama VI, Thai boxing developed rules
and qualifications to match the international standard.
The round and boxing equipment such as boxing mitts
were required for a professional boxer. There were nu-
merous boxing gyms established after the end of WWII
in 1941.

In September, 1995, Thai boxing has been broadcasting from Rajadamnern
Stadium for the first time. Its popularity was epidemic and phenomenal. It
seeped in every nook and cranny where there was a television set.

Nowadays there are college open course for Muay Thai Study with people who
interested to carry on the national’s martial arts with the certification. A lot of
fitness and gyms in the main cities in Thailand such as Bangkok, Pattaya,
Chiang Mai offers Thai Boxing class for working out.

Thomas : I have some questions about Muay Thai. Before every
bout, the fighters usually press their palms together and pay obei-
sance, then they dance to the music. What kind of ritual is that?

Surasak : That ritual is called Wai Khru Ram Muay Thai. Every
fighter must perform this ritual to show respect and gratitude to
their teacher, parents, to the sacred items, and to Buddha; as well
as to pray for safe during the bout and for triumph. This ritual is
also a cheerful way to warm up their bodies and prove their
strength to their rivals.

Thomas : I see. What is the headband they usually wear?

Surasak : The headband is called Mongkhon. It is believed to be a
highly spiritual object that brings the fighter luck and protects him
from possible dangers.

Thomas : Oh I get it. Thank you very much. Muay Thai is very
interesting indeed.
