Viewlands Primary School Oakbank Crescent, PERTH, PH1 1BU 01738 473080 Email: [email protected] Website: www.viewlands.pkc.gov.uk Twitter:@ViewlandsPS Dear Parent / Carer, And so, we find ourselves in Spring and the holidays are fast approaching! It was lovely to see you all in school this week, giving you an opportunity to hear how your child/ren is/are progressing and how you can continue to support their learning at home. Thank you for your continued support, we really do appreciate it. Important things to remember for next term is that there will be no more strike days and there will be bigger lunch portions for P5-P7 pupils. We are also anticipating, with great excitement, the return of an old school favourite – sponge and custard! The menu is changing for next term. The menu hasn’t been uploaded let, but keep an eye on this page School Catering by Tayside Contracts (tayside-contracts.co.uk) for all the up to date information as it comes. Just recently there has been staff changes. We have said goodbye to Miss Brymer who worked as an ECP in our Nursery for seven years. She thanks the staff and Nursery parents for their generous gifts and words of thanks. We welcome Miss Amy Swan who replaces Miss Brymer until the Summer holidays. I wish you all a lovely, relaxing and “egg-stra” special Spring break and look forward to welcoming back everyone for the start of the Summer Term on Monday 17 April 2023. Christeen Williamson, (Headteacher) 24 March 2023 Thank you to everyone who bought Red Noses this year in support of Comic Relief. We have raised a fantastic £507.50 from the sale of Red Noses. All proceeds from these sales go directly to this charity. P1S dressed for Red Nose Day
ff Also thanks to OVO workers for tiding up garden area front entrance and P6BW P4 CLASSROOM UPDATES (Picture above). Hawley sharing her experiences with P4 of being part of the ‘Up Helly A’ festival in Shetland this year. This was very exciting as it’s the first year that girls have been allowed to take part. P4 have been busy learning how to sort, estimate and display data. We have collected data, estimated, sorted, and then drawn graphs and pictograms. It was great fun using sweeties to learn. We have continued to learn all about Titanic, and we worked in a group to create a Titanic restaurant. There were some super ideas including special menus and themed restaurants As mentioned in one of my weekly update emails, I am looking to reform our Parent in Partnership group who will work with key staff to take forward our school improvement agenda on supporting and engaging with parents. The first meeting will be Wednesday 25 April at 2.00 p.m. and there will be at least one meeting per term. If you are interested in joining this group, please complete this online form HERE Christeen Williamson, (Headteacher) Here is a link to an interesting document if you are looking for some holiday reading! Perth & Kinross Council Schools Cross Country Championships On Tuesday 21st March, at a rather damp and muddy Perth Racecourse, was the Primary Cross-Country event. We had four teams representing Viewlands and they all did us extremely proud. With almost 200 runners in each race, our runners showed fantastic commitment and determination, with everyone finishing the course. • Our P6 boys’ team were Jack C, James, Jude, Nathan and Oliver. • Representing the P6 girls’ team were Alice, Heidi, Maya, Pippa and Taylor. • The P7 boys’ team included Andrew, Cole, Keane, Sam and Thom. • Our P7 girls’ team were Chloe, Freya, Hope, Imogen and Millah. Congratulations to Millah who finished 4th and narrowly missed out on an individual medal. Our P7 girls’ team were awarded silver medals for finishing second in the team event.
Perform in Perth Congratulations to all our pupils who took part in the Perform in Perth last week. All the pupils played extremely well, the first-time playing solo in front of an audience of parents, the general public and the adjudicator. Special mentions go to Martha who was awarded the highest class of all the Brass Classes 93 – with an Honours Certificate, and in Cello Solo (Level 2) Beth who was awarded a First-Class Certificate and 87 marks, and Esther who was awarded an Honours Certificate, 90 marks and 1st place.
An Update from Parent Council I wanted to say thank you to everyone who attended the Haggis Drive last month! It was great to see so many families back in Viewlands and having fun! I am also pleased to report that the event managed to raise £363 for school funds! We will soon begin planning our next big event which will be the Viewlands 80th birthday celebration! We are planning on this being a Friday evening in June…. more to come soon! If anyone has any questions or feedback for the Parent Council, please do get in touch via the school office. Ms Lyndsey Kaye, Chair Parent Council Primary 6 classes are looking to improve the area of garden at the front entrance of the school as part of their John Muir Award. The school needs your help with tools, compost, gloves etc. Any donations of gardening items or bedding plants later in the year (after the frosts) would be most appreciated. Achieving this would be amazing for visitors, parents, and our school community. Here are some P6 with their seed packets to help with this project. A big shout out too for the Ovo Community Project Team who came to help at Viewlands on 21st March and got us started by tidying up the front garden.
This year Viewlands has taken part in Euroquiz which is the Scottish European Educational Trust national primary schools’ quiz for P6 children. It is a foreign language and European general knowledge quiz. The Team members here are Ajwa, Lewis, Nathan and Johnny Erwin all from P6SR. The 90kg Rice Challenge Thank you to everyone who contributed to the 90kg Rice Challenge this week by purchasing a bag of Kilombero Fair Trade rice this week. We managed to sell all the bags of rice which will enable a Malawian farmer to send their child to high school for a year. Martha and Hope represented Viewlands at the recent launch of the Soutar Festival of Words 2023. Well done, we are all very proud of you! P7 ACHIEVEMENTS! Our P7 team came 2nd out of 15 teams taking part in the PKC Enterprising Maths contest, an initiative to support excellence in Numeracy in Perth and Kinross. Well done to Martha, Thomas, and Imogen – a fantastic result!
