Concert Programme Final Draft

TEACHER EILEEN’S
MESSAGE

Thank you for joining me this afternoon at Teach a Life,
For Life’s Fifth Annual Concert.

Today’s location is the grandest in our history so far –
a beautiful auditorium at 10 Square, Orchard Central.

A few of you may remember that we held our first concert
in a condominium clubhouse, with about eight students.
Twice, we had our event at a bookstore in the CityLink
Mall (Booktique Where Writers Shop). And last year, we
performed at the Hood Bar & Café in Bugis+ (see photo
on the last page).

The purpose of these performances is to provide students
with a platform for playing the pieces they have learned,
in a loving and encouraging environment – and have fun
in the process.

Whereever we may be, let’s continue to play the music as
it should be played – in the spirit of continuous learning
and fun. Thank you.

Ludwig Van BEETHOVEN (1770–1827)
TEACHER WAN SHAN
Beethoven was an influential German composer whose works spanned
both the Classical and Romantic periods. His works include nine
symphonies, five piano concertos, thirty-two piano sonatas and one
violin concerto.

The Violin Sonata in F, also known as the Spring Sonata, was
published in 1801. The Allegro movement opens with a lyrical theme
that harmonises beautifully over the delicate keyboard accompaniment,
creating an echo effect between the violin and piano. The development
begins in a minor key, causing a muscial conflict. In the recapitulation,
the minor key creeps back in with the opening motif.

was just 19. The first movement, Allegro, is written in sonata form, a
structure that was widely used during the Classical period. As I perform,
you can hear that the motif begins the piece and recapitulates in the
second half.
