Serving as a delightful finale, guests were treated to Mango Cheesecake and Mango Amaranth Phirni, satisfying their sweet tooth with exquisite flavours.n WORLD FOOD INDIA ROUNDTABLE INTERACTION - PARTICIPATION BY LEADING PROCESSING COS With regard to the upcoming World Food India-2023, an investor roundtable interaction was co-chaired by the Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and the Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, with agrifood processing companies in New Delhi, recently. The roundtable witnessed participation from the leading global and Indian food processing companies. During the interaction, the future plans of the participating companies and their prospects of partnerships with MoFPI for the WFI-2023, being organised from November 3-5, 2023, at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, were discussed. In his special address, Secretary, DPIIT, emphasised on the importance of manufacturing sector in the growing Indian GDP. He also mentioned the favourable agroclimatic zones in India which are not just suitable for production of a wide variety of agri-commodities like cereals, pulses, fruits and vegetables but also to process them in large quantities. In her keynote address, Secretary, MoFPI, mentioned about the growth and vast opportunities present in the food processing sector. She added that the ministry is organising the second edition of the highly anticipated World Food India event, envisioning an even larger scale compared to the previous 2017 edition. The Secretary extended a heartfelt invitation to all companies to participate in the event with great enthusiasm. During the roundtable, the participating companies expressed their optimistic outlook on the Indian market and lauded the various initiatives taken by the Government of India to improve the business environment, including the favourable policies such as the Production Linked Incentive Scheme and the flagship Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana initiated by MoFPI. The companies also expressed their interest in participating in World Food India-2023 and affirmed their willingness to sponsor the event and showcase their products and technologies through dedicated stall spaces. Many companies also showed keen interest on partnering with MoFPI for the sessions that are being planned as part of the event. In his closing remarks, Additional Secretary, MoFPI, mentioned that the Investment Facilitation Cell (Invest India) and event partner FICCI will stay in touch with the companies to firm up the participation details. EY is roped in as the knowledge partner for the event.n


54 August 2023 | Food And Beverage Matrix NEED TO POPULARISE ACCESS TO NUTRIENT RICH CROPS, SAYS DWIVEDI NEW CIRCULAR ISSUED FOR APPOINTMENT OF CHAIRPERSON, FSSAI Maninder Kaur Dwivedi, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of India, has emphasised that there is a need to popularise the access to nutrient rich crops, and industry to play a key role in this. “It is the corporates and industry which can turn nutrient rich crops into more varieties of ready to eat foods that are palatable, acceptable in line with evolving global taste,” she added. Addressing the ‘Global Summit on Strengthening Food Systems for Nutrient-Rich Crops’, organised by FICCI, Dwivedi stated that the process of fortification has been with us ever since public health was started and even before. “The urgency for it is now much clearer and stronger as our access to information is faster along with the impact of climate change. Biofortification is one way out wherein fortification not just post-harvest, but even before harvest,” she emphasised. Siraj Hussain, advisor, FICCI, and Former Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare and Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Government of India, stated that once biofortification becomes successful then the external fortification of wheat and rice may not be needed as biofortification will be a natural process. Hemendra Mathur, chairman, FICCI Taskforce on Agri Start-ups, said that it is time to think about how we can bring in nutritional security akin to food security. We need to build a more holistic solution by bringing policymakers, industry, startups, and R&D institutions together to drive the biofortification agenda as biofortification is cost-effective and affordable, he added. Penjani Mkambula, senior cluster lead, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), said, “Beyond health, there is an economic and environmental case for nutrient-rich crops. We should be talking about holistic approach toward nutrient-rich crops.”n The Union Health Ministry has issued a new circular for appointment of Chairperson, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, superseding the previous circular published in April 2022. The circular reads, “Applications are invited to fill up the post of Chairperson, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The FSSAI was established as a statutory body under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (No. 34 of 2006) for laying down sciencebased standards for articles of food and to regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption. The Chairperson of the FSSAI is to perform such duties and functions and exercise such powers as prescribed under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the rules and regulations made there under. The head office of the FSSAI is in Delhi.” For Chairpersonship of FSSAI, the applicants should be persons of eminence in the field of food science or persons from administration who have been associated with the subject and are either holding or have held a position not below the rank of Secretary to the Government of India. Besides, relevant work experience related to Central/ State Regulatory Bodies would be a desirable qualification for the position. And the Chairperson shall hold office for a term of three years from the date on which he/she enters upon the office and shall be eligible for re-appointment for a further period of three years or till he/she attains the age of 65 years whichever is earlier. Food And Beverage | Matrix August 2023 55 REFERRAL SAMPLES CAN BE SENT IRRESPECTIVE OF LAB JURISDICTION, SAYS FSSAI The FSSAI has issued an order stating that referral/appellate samples can be sent to any referral lab irrespective of the jurisdiction. “All stakeholders are hereby requested to send Referral/Appellate samples to any Referral Food Laboratories as per their valid NABL scope irrespective of their area of jurisdiction,” reads the order. According to the FSSAI, there were representations received from the stakeholders regarding the restrictiveness of area of jurisdiction, and the food authority decided to make it open for all the appellate samples. “Considering that the area of jurisdiction of these laboratories is restrictive and the scope is dynamic in nature as per the notification (regarding the list of referral food laboratories notified by the FSSAI to carryout functions of Referral Food Laboratories for the specific areas and scope), it has been decided by the Competent Authority that, the Appellate/Referral Samples may be sent to any Referral Laboratory as per their valid scope of testing irrespective of their areas of jurisdiction,” reads the notice while adding that an amendment to this effect shall be processed in due course of time. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers handpicked nine centres nationwide to be part of this transformative programme, with Coromandel International Limited's PMKSK center at Shamirpet securing its position among the selected few. The ceremony witnessed the esteemed presence of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy from the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Government of India. The PMKSK centres established by Coromandel International were broadcast live to 4200 locations in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, ensuring that farmers across the two Telugu states could witness and benefit from the knowledge shared about sustainable agriculture and integrated nutrient management. Addressing the gathering, GV Subbareddy, vice president of Coromandel International Limited, emphasised the importance of utilising soil testing and extension services available through PMKSK centres. Additionally, Adhikari Vaidya Garu reaffirmed the organisation's commitment to farmers' economic growth by providing quality fertilisers, micronutrients, and organic fertilisers in appropriate measures.
