Message From
the Bishop
Thirty Years of Ministry
The Lord has called me to a time of reflection upon entering into my 30th year of ministry at the greatest branch of Zion that I know . I have preached numerous sermons; officiated many weddings; made countless hospital visits;
blessed scores of babies and have pronounced final benedictions over the lives of others .
I thank the Lord Jesus Christ for the wonderful church and people He has allowed me to lead; the journeys we have discovered and the visions He has allowed me to see to come into fruition . I really thank Him for the renewed energy that He supplies daily . I truly believe that “Our Faith Makes the Difference.”
How has all of this happened? There is a section of Scripture that immediately comes to mind:
Romans 12:1–2
1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service . 2And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God .
As we reflect, we must constantly present, renew and transform . If we are nothing more than what we have been in the past, then the past was not necessary . We must use our reflections to continue to challenge ourselves and motivate change . Therefore, use your faith to forge new vistas and new territory for your future .
I end with this final thought, “if it ain’t alright, it is going to be alright.” Bishop Kevin V. Gresham, Sr.

Tell Me Lord
Poet: Greta Zwaan Submitted by Sister Sylvia Tyson
Lord, am I obeying you as I should? Am I cutting corners to do as I would? Do I interpret Your law my way?
Do I ask You questions? Do I stop to pray?
When I think I’m doing what You request Do I bend Your plans to suit me best?
Is it my schedule that sets my goals,
Do I run ahead of You, searching for souls? I want to follow the guidelines You set,
I want to please You, to serve You, and yet I feel I’m short changing Your perfect plan; perhaps I’m too hasty to reach out to man.
I want to consult You, to be in Your will
But sometimes I wonder, did You say “Be still”? I do need Your guidance, I can’t run ahead, Teach me to follow, to hear You instead. Give me Your patience so that I will know, You’ll plainly tell me just where I should go.

UNRESTRICTED
ACCESS
By Minister Christina Williams
Job 1:6 – Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.
The other day I was walking down the corridor of a medical building when I saw a sign on the door which read “Restricted Access – Authorized Personnel Only”. I immediately thought to myself, I need to turn around and go in a different direction because I am not authorized to access this area of the building . Access to that area is restricted only to those who are authorized to enter .
In Job 1:6, we see that the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came with them . When I read this passage, it stuck with me because I was amazed by the fact that Satan has unauthorized access to God! God’s archenemy has unrestricted access to Him! You would think that once Satan was kicked out of Heaven, he would no longer have access to God . His access should be restricted, right? But, the scripture clearly shows us that Satan is authorized and has unrestricted access to God .
What does this mean for us? If Satan, the Devil, Lucifer, the adversary, the accuser, the false god, the tempter has unrestricted access to God; surely we, God’s sons and daughters, have unrestricted access to God . If God allowed Satan, the one who challenged His authority and took 1/3 of God’s angels with him from Heaven to earth and allowed Satan to meet with Him and talk to Him; surely, there isn’t ANYTHING that we have done or might have done that restricts our access to God!
Stop allowing Satan to trick you into believing you can’t talk to God because of what you did . Stop allowing Satan to trick you into believing that God is not concerned about you . Stop allowing Satan to trick you into believing that God will not answer your prayers because of your past . Acts 10:34 states, Then Peter opened his mouth and said: In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality . Which means God shows no favoritism . After all Satan talks to God . Satan didn’t tell you that, did he? Whose report will you believe?
The doors to God’s heart are WIDE open and ALL of us have unrestricted access to Him! You are authorized to go through the doors to God . Jesus authorized you with His life . The sign to God reads: “Unrestricted Access – All are Welcome” .

Hedge of Protection
By Sister Janice Shields
This article is based upon my personal analysis of Bishop Gresham’s September 16th Sermon .
OMG! This message deeply connected to my prayer life and spirit . Due to HIS “Hedge of Protection,” which I pray to GOD for daily, I can go to bed at night and not worry about where my adult children are or be alarmed by the seen and unseen dangers of this world . I can get in my car and travel back and forth without major incident because of HIS “Hedge of Protection” . There are a multitude of situations and actions that GOD protects me, my family and those connected to me from by placing HIS “Hedge of Protection” around us .
For me, Bishop’s sermon unveiled another level in understanding Job’s story . While I have heard Job’s story dissected
in many ways, GOD’s “Hedge of Protection” is so real, so personal and applicable to my life .
While I have had countless trials and tribulations, I also have had amazing testimonies based on those seasons in my life . The good news for me is that GOD’s “Hedge of Protection” protected and spared me from things I can’t even imagine (and don’t want to) . GOD will truly not put more on you than you can bare .
I have never taken GOD’s “Hedge of Protection” for granted; however, Bishop’s eye-opening, thought-provoking message gives me an even “Greater” appreciation and thanks for GOD’s Grace and Mercy with HIS “Hedge of Protection” .

Thin Line Between Love and Hate
By Sister Janice Shields
Disclaimer: I realize that hate is a very strong word to use; therefore, please see this mini-story in a light-hearted spirit . The struggle is real ( ) .
To All Mentioned and Unmentioned Parties:
If you find your name listed in this letter, please note that you have been given notice as of this date, through the Holiday Season (and a possible lifetime span) .
This letter serves as my official letter to end our “love-hate” relationship .
Before I say good-bye to mac and cheese, fried chicken, potato salad, cheeseburgers, cookies, chips, pop tarts, cakes and pies (OMG!) and my other favorite foodies, I want to say thank you for being my sidekick at family dinners, cookouts, special occasions, meltdown/stress moments and late-night snacking .
You know how much I love you guys, but the time has come for me to transition into a healthier diet/lifestyle/relationship . Although I have enjoyed cooking, baking, buying and eating of you, I am determined this time to end this bad relationship . I’ve heard there is nothing more powerful than a changed mind!
Favorite foodies, I want you to know that you are not bad for everyone—just me .
Finally, I wish moderation in your next relationship .

V.O.I.C.E. - It’s A New Day
By Minister Danielle N. Hall
In October 2017, a new movement began to spread virally: #metoo . It is a movement to expose the epidemic of sexual harassment and assault in the workplace . Many women identified as having dealt with such violations include celebrities Ashley Judd and Gwyneth Paltrow . The #metoo was initially created by Social Activist and Community Organizer Tarana Burke on Myspace in 2006 . This is an effort to bring empowerment through empathy for women of color who have been sexually abused in underprivileged communities . On October 15, 2017, actress Alyssa Milano encouraged spreading the phrase, as part of an awareness campaign, by tweeting “If all the women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted wrote ‘Me too’ as a status, we might give people a sense of the magnitude of the problem”. The truth is that this widespread problem has occurred in many arenas and has been swept under the rug .
V .O .I .C .E . was launched on April 19, 2017 . It is not in response to the “Me Too” campaign, but is in response to the need to finally address the proverbial elephant in the room who has been there for generations . As founder, I know how being violated can cause you to shut down and how you can be guilt-tripped into shame and silence . BUT, most importantly, I now know what it’s like to overcome the guilt, shame, silence and suffering . After having been in the spiritual womb for four years, V .O .I .C .E . was birthed during the month observed for sexual assault awareness . It was the beginning of a new day!
Who We Are:
Victorious Overcomers Inspiring Christian Empowerment
Why We Are:
PURPOSE - V .O .I .C .E . seeks to serve women who have been either sexually abused or sexually assaulted and have suffered in silence . V .O .I .C .E . was created to empower and encourage women, with a history of sexual abuse, to live an abundant life through the power and principles of God
What We Set Out To Do:
MISSION - To empower women, who have been sexually-abused or assaulted, to walk in victory through the Gospel of Christ and the teaching of Godly principles .
Our Goal:
VISION - Overcomers helping others to overcome
Did You Know:
According to statistics...
-1 in 2 women will have experienced rape in her lifetime .
-1 in 5 women will have been sexually assaulted in her lifetime -Many cases go unreported
What We Need You To Know:
- It was not your fault - You are not alone
- You will overcome
Due to the overwhelming amount of reported offenses, based on statistics, we find that there are more people than not who are affected by sexual assault and abuse . More often than not, the perpetrator (predator) knows the prey well . Due to this
6 | GREATER SAINT JOHN CATHEDRAL | The Jabez Report | Fall Edition 2018
continue on page 7

continue from page 6
familiarity, many survivors take the position to remain silent about the offenses . They take the blame or the position of protecting the offender . At other times, especially if the perpetrator is a relative, once the secret is told then the response is “What happens in the house stays in this house” or something of the like . In some cases, we see that response has been from one who has learned to respond that way from having been abused or assaulted herself . Consequently, there are generations of survivors suffering in silence .
V .O .I .C .E . is here to help break that pattern . . .no more silence and no more suffering . IT’S A NEW DAY! While we do not condone offenses or belittle any experience, we do not dwell on the offenses . In each monthly gathering, the atmosphere is set to create a safe space for women to share their experiences, but to also be empowered to live a life of divine purpose after surviving offenses . It is an environment that negates the stigma of women not being able to get along, an environment that encourages sisterhood and an environment that fosters a sense of trust that may have been lost after having been violated .
Each month, we come together and get fresh revelation or increased motivation to move forward in the things of God by the power of Him . A typical gathering includes the following:
• Song of Meditation - Used in conjunction with the monthly theme which is playing while gatherers enjoy FREE dinner provided by V .O .I .C .E .
• Points of Power - A message guided by a God-given theme .
• Interactive Activity - Sometimes done during the Points of Power or sometimes done after . • Open Floor Discussion
At our gatherings, some have shared their personal testimonies of having been violated . However, we do not require you to share your story . We do hope that you find the environment to be a safe one for you to do so if you decided to break your silence . There is no pressure, only support . We do believe that sharing your testimony is a vital key to overcoming . Our foundational scripture is Revelation 12:11a (NKJV) “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony...”
Below are testimonials from a couple of victorious overcomers:
“It’s pushed me to a place from settling to aspiring to do greater . You empower us to live purpose-filled lives and to go after our dreams .”
“V .O .I .C .E has impacted me because I’m surrounded by great, strong women who have gone through the same type of violations . These women are so positive . This group of women has shown me that we can get through anything together . I love this group of women for helping me to trust other women . Thanks V .O .I .C .E .!”
The V .O .I .C .E . experience is life changing! We want to help as many women overcome as possible . These gatherings are open to the public . V .O .I .C .E . usually meets on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7pm at the House of Hope . For additional information, please feel free to call (301)364-4090 .

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: What You Need to Know and How You Can Help
ATLANTA, Oct. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire—As National Breast Cancer Awareness Month begins, the American Cancer Society says remarkable progress against the disease should not obscure the significant challenges remaining.
The Facts:
Thanks to largely stable incidence rates, improved treatment, as well as earlier detection through screening and increased awareness, a woman’s risk of dying of breast cancer dropped 39 percent between the late 1980s and 2015, translating into more than 300,000 breast cancer deaths avoided during that time.
Despite that progress, there’s much more to be done. Breast cancer is still the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, second only to lung cancer. There is still a large racial gap in mortality, with African-American women having higher death rates compared to whites, even as incidence rates are similar.
The American Cancer Society’s estimates for breast cancer in the United States for 2018 are:
• About 266,120 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women .
• About 63,960 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed (CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer) .
• About 40,920 women will die from breast cancer .
• While black and white women get breast cancer at roughly the same rate, the mortality rate is 42% higher among black women than white women .
At this time, there are more than 3.1 million people with a history of breast cancer in the United States. (This includes women still being treated and those who have completed treatment.)
Risk factors:
• Numerous studies have confirmed that alcohol consumption increases the risk of breast cancer in women by about 7%-10% for each one drink of alcohol consumed per day on average. Women who have 2-3 alcoholic drinks per day have a 20 percent higher risk of breast cancer compared to non-drinkers.
•Obesity increases the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. Risk is about 1.5 times higher in overweight women and about 2 times higher in obese women than in lean women.
•Growing evidence suggests that women who get regular physical activity have a 10%-25% lower risk of breast cancer compared to women who are inactive, with stronger evidence for postmenopausal than premenopausal women
•Limited but accumulating research indicates that smoking may slightly increase breast cancer risk, particularly long-term, heavy smoking and among women who start smoking before their first pregnancy .

If you or someone you love are concerned about developing breast cancer, has been recently diagnosed, are going through treatment, or are trying to stay well after treatment, the American Cancer Society provides important information on these topics and more.
What the American Cancer Society is Doing
The ACS currently funds 155 multi-year grants focused on breast cancer totaling $60.2 million. We have played a key role in many of the advances against breast cancer, including funding early work that eventually led to the development of tamoxifen and Herceptin.
Join us and help save lives from breast cancer: Fundraise and participate in one of more than 250 Making Strides events or participate virtually at makingstrideswalk.org.
The American Cancer Society’s nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy affiliate, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) is also working to make fighting breast cancer a national priority. ACS CAN is committed to ensuring that all women have the opportunity to receive lifesaving cancer screenings and services. Working in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., ACS CAN advocates for adequate funding for early detection programs that provide access to affordable breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services to low-income, uninsured and underinsured women.

Think on This:
“Be grateful for what you already have while you pursue your goals . If you aren’t grateful for what you already have, what makes you think you would be happy with more?” — Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
A word of encouragement from a teacher to a child can change a life . A word of encouragement from a spouse can save a marriage . A word of encouragement from a leader can inspire a person to reach his/her potential . — John C. Maxwell
Many people are struggling because they have not used what God has given them . God gives you an acorn; you invest it and it will become a tree! Stop praying for trees while acorns are lying all over the ground . God answered your prayer for the tree when He sent you the acorn . Your creative ideas are acorns from which mighty trees emerge . Your talent is given to you to be multiplied . — T. D. Jakes
