Emily, Ashlyn, and me. (Grace)
After being tossed around in all the ferry
wakes of New York Harbor and running
around with more people than we’ve
seen in our lives (never mind the last 10
months), we cut inland and started the ride
up the Hudson River. The river is a wide,
deep tidal run for about 150 miles north to
the start of the Erie Canal (near Troy, NY),
and it was one of the more surprisingly
beautiful sections of the trip.
The idea that New York City was
anywhere nearby was hard to believe.
Just a few miles north of Manhattan,
the buildings disappeared and sweeping
landscapes of rolling hills, cliffs, and trees
remained. Mansions peeked out from the
tops of hills, white puffy clouds painted
roving shadows amongst the sunlit valley,
and rock formations kept me fascinated for
hours. City? What city? It was a different
world.
Along the way, we received an email
from back home. A friend at our home club
Crescent, Tom Cotter, used to live in the
area and sailed at Chelsea Yacht Club.
He offered to connect us with a friend with
the promise of hot showers and a mooring
ball. We were sold. Realizing we were just
a day away, I made a phone call to Sharon
Herring: “Hey, can we show up tomorrow?”
Seemingly unfazed, arrangements were
made and we unknowingly began one of
our most heartwarming experiences of our
adventure.

They even helped us organize a visit from Emily’s aunt and uncle, Claudia

timing was perfect, and our hearts were flooded with gratitude.

I am 83 years old and
have spent my entire life,
swimming, flying, fishing,
hunting, summer boating,
iceboating in winter in, on,
over and around the Hudson
River.
I have met many, many
visitors, walking, kayaking,

In all that time, I never

Interestingly enough the
local people, politicians and

making a career of doing
just that. What happens, it

descriptions of nautical lore and days gone by on the canal system.
Just a few hours north, the village of Schuylerville has so many choices for food you
might have to stay a few days just to check them all out. Start with the restaurant
right at the Schuyler Yacht Basin – Clark’s Steakhouse. Then, a short walk up the
street are some really nice places. Sweet Lou’s Deli and Restaurant (161 Broad St),
for example, is another quaint, adorable place to grab a (huge!) sandwich served with
a beaming smile by chef Louis Maggiore. Just down the street, the Old Saratoga
Eatery (112 Broad St) has some great sandwiches, salads, pizzas, dinner selections
and more, plus a comfortable relaxed atmosphere to enjoy the upstate New York
ambiance. The “Feeding the Crew” section has information on these restaurants

Heading west on the Erie Canal? No problem. A must-stop is the Water’s Edge
Lighthouse Restaurant, 2 Freemans Bridge Rd, Glenville, which is open weekdays for
lunch and dinner and weekends for dinner only. The experience is truly unforgettable,
and the location and food are quite exceptional as well. Stop in and see why this
is such a favorite with locals! A short distance west is Mohawk Harbor and the
sprawling Rivers Casino and Resort complex, which also has dining, nightlife and of

state of New York.

ALEX SALOMATOFF HAS
THE ANSWERS TO YOUR
BOAT
QUESTIONS!
If you have a question for Master Mechanic and
Owner of Alex’s Marine Plus in New Windsor, NY,
simply call Alex at 845-565-9199
or e-mail, [email protected]
Question #346 for Alex: What is the number one item to check on
an older outboard to assure good running condition?
Alex Salomatoff. Compression, compression, compression. Without it the engine
simply will not run properly no matter what else you do to replace,
clean or service other components of your older outboard, jet ski, or
inboard.
Here is how you do it: First use a reliable compression gauge that fits
the spark plug hole of your engine.
Remove the spark plug from the cylinder. Screw in the compression
gauge or in some cases, you can hold the compression gauge against
the spark plug hole. Have someone turn over the engine at least twice.
Write down the reading on the gauge. replace the spark plug in that
cylinder you just tested and remove the next spark plug. Repeat the
testing procedure. BE SURE AND WRITE DOWN THE COMPRESSION
READING ON THIS CYLINDER AS WELL.
Once you have done every cylinder see what the range is between
cylinders. If the compression range varies dramatically from cylinder
to cylinder you have a very basic problem that can only be solved by
and experienced mechanic like we have on staff.
Obviously it is important to know what the operating range should be
before getting started for that particular engine.
We offer a wide range of services -
Maintenance/Tune ups – Complete service and parts for all sizes from the smallest
Outboards to Inboard Diesels.
Complete Engine/Drive Repowers – From replacing your engine to rebuilding
your outdrive. We have over 25 years experience.
Electronic Installations – From simple Radio install to GPS and Radar interfacing.
Inside/Outside Detailing – Keep your boat glistening with a Wash & Wax
Mobile/Dockside Service – Our expert & reliable mobile boat repair technicians

Winterization/Storage – We offer complete Engine and System winterization with
secure on site storage.
RV Maintenance – We can maintain your new RV or recondition your used one.
Jet-Ski Maintenance – We offer complete service and repairs of all personal
watercraft and if speed is what you need, we can do that too.
ATV Maintenance – We offer complete service and repairs on all ATV’s, no matter
what size.

Growing up in Buchanan, once I was old enough to
drive I became aware that “Crompound” Road headed

towards Yorktown. Recently Kath and I discovered there
was a “Crom Pond”, east of Mohansic Lake in Franklin

As I’ve said (and written) many times before, we are
always on the lookout for new, interesting, reasonably-

swamps, marshes, wetlands—to paddle and explore.
Over the years we’d passed Mohansic Lake in FDR on the Taconic probably
something like 40,000-50,000 times, and often glanced longingly at the big,
interesting-looking body of water.
Finally, years ago, we pulled off the parkway and up to the entrance gatehouse
with our trusty dark green We-no-nah Sundowner strapped to the roof rack, and
the grumpy guy inside the gatehouse just about immediately snarled something
like “You can’t put THAT THING on the lake.” He went on and on that it had to
be sterilized, or pasteurized, or something like that: we just about always wash
down our boats, inside and out, after we use them, and, they then dry off before
our next outing. We tried to explain this to The Grump, but he would have none
of it, and, very disappointed by this unexpected negative encounter, we drove
