Ka Buke Mele o nā Hīmeni Hawai‘i
(The Lyric Book of Hawaiian Choral Songs)
Edited by E. C. Holstein
Foreword by M. Puakea Nogelmeier
A collection of nearly 300 songs that were popular and widely
sung during the last decades of the 19th century. Prominent
political figures and well-loved ali‘i composers, such as
Lili‘uokalani, Leleiōhoku, and Kalākaua, are nicely represented
in this group, which includes love ballads, tributes, playful
mele, and compositions with cultural and historical comment.

He Buke Wehewehe Hua‘ōlelo Baibala
(A Dictionary of Biblical Words)
Translated by E. W. Clark; Foreword by M. Puakea Nogelmeier
Reverend Ephraim Weston Clark’s arrival in Hawai‘i in 1828 was
the beginning of 35 years of missionary service in the Islands.
Clark’s work included the publishing of Hawaiian language texts;
his translation of this Bible dictionary in 1872 was the last of
many such publications. In He Buke Wehewehe Hua‘ōlelo Baibala,
not only words and meanings are presented, but quotes and
verses where the word can be found are also included.

Kaua Kūloko 1895
(Civil War 1895)
Edited by Thomas P. Spencer; Foreword by M. Puakea Nogelmeier
Kaua Kūloko 1895 was printed in the same year of the famous civil
battle between patriots of the Kingdom of Hawaii and the Republican
forces that had overthrown the constitutional Hawaiian monarchy.
The goal of the failed rebellion was to return Queen Lili‘uokalani to
the throne. This is the only known text where the information and
the sequence of events of that unforgettable period are gathered
together and published in the Hawaiian language.

Ka Buke Mo‘olelo o Honorable
Robert William Wilikoki
(The Biography of the Honorable
Robert William Wilcox)
Thomas K. Nakanaela; Foreword by M. Puakea Nogelmeier
On July 30, 1889, Robert W. Wilcox mounted a failed attempt
to overthrow the Cabinet of the time, and return the throne
to powers that had been diminished through the “Bayonet
Constitution” of 1887, which had stripped the Hawaiian
monarchy of its power. Ka Buke Mo‘olelo o Honorable Robert
William Wilikoki is the account of that one-day battle, of the
legal trials that followed, and of the man who led the only
armed rebellion during the Hawaiian monarchy.

Bishop Museum Occasional Papers

Bishop Museum Press,
Hawai‘i’s oldest publishing
house, and one of the first
scholarly publishers in the Western
Hemisphere, was established in 1892 by
the first director of the Bishop Museum,
Dr. William T. Brigham. Having been
officially appointed by Charles Reed
Bishop in February 1891 for the sum
of $2500 a year, the young Harvard
graduate and former instructor at
Oahu College (now Punahou School)
immediately set out to catalog the
vast collections donated by its founders.
The Museum trustees agreed to
Brigham’s request to purchase a small printing press, made by Golding and Company
of Boston, for printing of labels used in the exhibition halls of the Museum.
Soon after, Brigham was able to convince Charles Reed Bishop that the Museum’s
activities could be extended to include the publication of information about specimens
on exhibit. The first Press publication was the Museum’s Preliminary Catalog written by
Dr. Brigham in 1892–1893, when he was the sole member of the staff working with the
first 6,000 specimens in the original three room building.
The small press proved so useful that the trustees allowed Brigham to purchase suitable
type and other printing equipment so that the Museum might publish its own research.
In 1896, the printing press was moved to the ground floor of Polynesian Hall, where it
resided for the next 15 years, until its relocation to the ground floor of the Laboratory
(now Pākī Hall) in 1911. Due to expanding printing needs and paper shortages in 1920,
www.bishopmuseum.org/press 59
Dr. Herbert E. Gregory, the acting director at the time, awarded the Honolulu
Star-Bulletin the contract to print Museum manuscripts—an arrangement that
lasted over 40 years—and the printing press was removed from Museum grounds.
Bishop Museum Press began publication of the Museum’s scholarly series in 1898 with
the Bishop Museum Occasional Papers. The Bishop Museum Memoirs followed a year
later in 1899. After collaboration with Yale University provided funding for numerous
expeditions to the Pacific islands, the Bishop Museum Bulletin series was created in
1922 to publish the long research papers that were written.
In 1953, the newly formed Bishop Museum Association created the Museum’s first
Annual Report and distributed them to the members of the Association along with
a gift publication. It is believed that around this time the Bishop Museum Press adopted
its famous petroglyph logo to symbolize kuleana to publish books that advance the
understanding of the cultural and natural history of Hawai‘i and the Pacific in a way
that honors traditional knowledge systems as well as Western schools of thought.
Today the Bishop Museum Press continues its legacy of excellence and service to
Hawai‘i and the world, having published over 1,250 titles and sold over 1,000,000
books in 72 countries worldwide. Many of the Museum’s titles such as Te Rangi Hiroa
(Sir Peter Buck’s) Arts & Crafts of Hawaii, and Mary Kawena Pukui’s masterpiece ‘Ōlelo
No‘eau are considered seminal works that continue to resonate with new generations
and celebrate our understanding and appreciation of Hawai‘i’s rich cultural and natural
history. Bishop Museum Press is committed to remaining a leader in the publication of
scholarly works on topics related to Hawai‘i and the Pacific while continuing to develop
trade publications to better serve Hawai‘i’s people.
Proceeds of sales of Bishop Museum Press books further the Museum’s efforts in research,
education and collections care. Mahalo for your support of Bishop Museum publications.
