LETTER FROM THE EDITOR WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY SEQUORA PRICE 26’ It’s finally the end of the year, Bears! This year has certainly been filled with many ups and downs. This year marked the fifth year since Berlin opened its doors to the community. We’ve grown substantially not just in numbers, but in representation. This was also our first year with the title of Most Spirited. We owned this title, whether it was in the stands or the hallways. We’ve obtained one more year under our belt, and I’d say it was a good one. This magazine reflects what we’ve learned this year as Bears and our accomplishments in every aspect of the word. Continue reading to view highlighted moments from this school year. Whether you’re a Senior ready to graduate, or a Freshman looking forward to being a Sophomore, this magazine will allow you to reminisce on this past year. Although we’re all certainly ready for summer, it’s important to reflect first. Reflect on new friends made and memories obtained. Maybe this year wasn’t the best for some of you, and you can use this reflection to establish goals for next school year. Just remember, don’t be too hard on yourself. We’re just getting started. As we finish these last few days, don’t forget to give it your all. Sincerely, THE LESSONS WE LEARN / PAGE 3 / MAY 2023
BASHORE CAPTURES COURT WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY SEQUORA PRICE 26’ Aubrey Bashore ‘26 is ready to show the world what she’s got. As a freshman on the Junior Varsity Lady Bears basketball team, Bashore currently learns how the high school basketball scene works. Part of what she learns is how to manage her time. “We do shooting drills, ball handling, go over plays, and scrimmage,” Bashore said. Her daily routine is quite chaotic. Between her honors schedule and after-school basketball, Bashore is always active. With her hoop at home, she makes sure to practice whenever she can. “I think I can improve on everything. Specifically, ball handling because I play a position where I don’t, but it’s still important”, Bashore said. Bashore makes sure to try her hardest in every aspect of her life. She carries this throughout games, where she keeps her eyes on the ball. Assists with her teammates are important to Bashore because teamwork is everything. Berlin’s spirit is always present in her attitude, due to her awesome coaches. “All the coaches are really helpful and teach me a lot,” Bashore said. Her coaches and teammates continue to want Bashore to succeed. In high school, this is key to her awesome attitude. Bashore has played basketball since she was six years old. This has helped her today, where she is a star player on the team. “I like basketball because it’s a fun way for me to stay active and I like that in basketball you get to play offense and defense”, Bashore said. Bashore truly puts her passion into basketball. Her passion forms many connections for her, due to her kind heart. Bashore is friends with everyone on the team. Bashore looks up to professional players and others that play the game. Basketball is a natural part of who she is. “I don’t really know if I want to play for college but I’m sure it would be a great opportunity”, Bashore said. Although Bashore is captured with basketball now, there’s no way to tell what the future holds. Her talent in the game will take her far in life, and it may take her even further if she continues for college. For now, you can find Bashore playing for us Bears. Make sure to cheer her on! JV LADY BEARS GET BEAT WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY SEQUORA PRICE 26’ On Tuesday, Nov. 29, the JV Lady Bears were ready to continue their winning streak. The teamwork resounding through the court was incredible, but The Cardinals were prepared for what our girls had to bring. The game ended in a win by Thomas Worthington, 25-16. Tensions running high as the team walked onto the court at Thomas Worthington, the girls were ready to prove what they practiced in the past weeks. Warming up seemed to be a breeze for both The Bears and The Cardinals. Once the game started, it was clear this was going to be a close game. Each player was locked in on the ball as Berlin players Kate Rizzo 26’ and Aubrey Bashore 26’ neared the hoop. The ball seemed to be the real opponent as it spins around the rim. Disappointment was clear on each girl’s face from the brick. The Cardinals quickly rebounded the ball and were able to get a shot. This cycle continued throughout the first period, which ended 5-0 Cardinals in the lead. The second period started strikingly similar. Thomas Worthington made sure to never back down. Keeping up, the Bears kept fighting. The Cardinals defense managed to knock down a few of our girls, but they always got back up. The Lady Bears kept up the perseverance, ending the period with a score of 10-4 Cardinals still in the lead. After a 15-minute halftime intermission, each team was ready to battle it out on the court. Third period consisted of many free throws. Bashore was able to get a field goal and made it clear air balls were never an option. The Bears kept up the assists, fighting to even the score. Third period ended 19-10, with the Cardinals still in the lead. Period 4 showed exceptional spirit from The Lady Bears. The Cardinals kept up screens to block out The Bears. The Cardinals speed encouraged the crowd and kept things competitive. Players were falling left and right, only to get back up as if nothing happened. It was clear this win was something each team desired. The Cardinals made sure to keep up their defense throughout the final minutes of the period. The Thomas Worthington Cardinals prevailed. The final score reflected this, and The Cardinals were aesthetic about the win. The Bears, though upset, kept up a good attitude with determination for the Varsity Lady Bears to prevail over the Cardinals. Although The Bears JV girls were defeated, they kept up the Berlin spirit. Assistant JV Coach Mrs. Miller believes the next game will help the girls get back on track. “I feel like in the first half we didn’t play to our potential. The second half we stepped it up… but our shots just weren’t falling. It’s nice to shake that one off and play again Friday to regain our confidence”, Miller said. This win for The Cardinals puts their record at 1-2. This game was a clear victory not just through the score, but also the attitudes of the team. They brought all they had for this win, and it clearly has made them stronger as a team. Each player gave their all for this victory. This was an inspiring moment for Shayleen Martinez 25’, who knew The Cardinals had it in them. “The beginning of the game was definitely a struggle, but we really worked together as a team towards the end and earned the victory. Our defense really came through”, Martinez said. All in all, this game was definitely a wakeup call for both teams. The challenge to fight harder next time runs in our Lady Bears blood. The next game for The Bears is Fri. Dec 2, where they are sure to bring all they have. Defense, teamwork, and grit are all things to look out for at this next game. TED LASSO CONTINUES TO AWE Season 3 of Apple TV’s hit television series ‘Ted Lasso’ finally arrived. Changes were introduced for new characters, and this season certainly has shown potential to be the best yet. Nathan Shelley, played by Nick Mohammed, observes his team as the head coach of West Ham United in season 3. Photo courtesy: AppleTV+ Season 2 ended with a plethora of changes. Nathan Shelly, played by Nick Mohammed, left Richmond to play for rival team, West Ham United. West Ham United is owned by Rupert Mannion, Rebecca Welton’s, the owner of Richmond, ex-husband. In season 1, it’s revealed that Rebecca only hired Ted so that the team failed. Fueled by anger after her divorce from Rupert after he cheated on her, Rebecca wanted the team to fail. Now Rebecca’s intentions are only towards success for the team. Rupert, hungry for power after the loss to Richmond, buys West Ham by the end of the second season. To drive the knife deeper, he hires Nathan, who feels betrayed by Ted, and he accepts the job. Although many fans currently despise Nathan, many fans still wish for him to come back to Richmond. Some fans are certainly ready for more of his character development in season 3. Romance was also a theme that has been entrenched in Ted Lasso throughout the seasons, and certainly that hasn’t changed. Although love seemed dim after the end of season 2 due to break-ups from both Rebecca and Sam Obisanya, a star player and fan favorite from Nigeria, and Keeley Jones and Roy Kent, fans should look for redemption in season 3. New romance is in store for Keeley although many still root for her and Roy to get back together. Keeley’s new romantic adventures are what every fan should keep their eyes on this season. New brand deals were introduced this season as well. Jeni’s Ice Cream and Ted Lasso collaborated to create Ted’s classic treat for fans. Named “Biscuits with the Boss”this treat involves shortbread cookies combined with buttery-sweet cream. McCarthy’s main adversary, Gaetz was prepared to fend off the republican. As a republican and previous supporter of President Donald J. Trump, Gaetz is stirring up the political world. Gaetz has strong opposition to McCarthy taking up the mantle of speaker for the House of Representatives. “You just want to be speaker”, McCarthy said according to the New York Times. “You can have the portrait”, Gaetz said according to the New York Times. The previous House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, stepped down after the House became predominantly Republican. “For me, the hour has come for a new generation to lead the Democratic congress that I so deeply respect”, Pelosi said according to NBC4. After a long battle, McCarthy became the 55th speaker of the House. Gaetz, merely sees McCarthy as speaker by title only. Gaetz still views McCarthy as a small threat. Many in the G.O.P who favor Trump agree with Gaetz’ opinions, making him a powerful figure in the House. This leads Americans to wonder what is next in American politics. “...had to be dealt with, even if he was not ever going to vote for Kevin”, said Patrick T. McHenry according to the New York Times. McHenry is a strong political ally of McCarthy, who views Gaetz in a poor light. McHenry is not the only one who disagrees with Gaetz’ ideology, there are many who find Gaetz’ opinions false. For every supporter of Gaetz, there are opposers to his beliefs. Not surprisingly, the House is divided once more proving that politicians within the same party don’t always agree. FOUR POINTS PIZZA: THE PIZZA THAT GIVES WRITTEN AND DESIGNED BY SEQUORA PRICE 26’ Bears, you need to get your mouth around a slice of Four Points pizza. I promise you, it will be a mouth watering experience. For starters, I would rate Four Points a five out of five pizza slices. The pizza gives the consumer a whirlwind of flavors, not to mention their amazing customer service. I placed my order over the phone and it took only a minute. Employees at Four Points value speed, but still my order is never missing anything. It’s perfect, slice to slice. I first ordered Four Points about a year ago. I made my way to 5277 Columbus Pike, Lewis Center, OH, and was met with a quaint place. As I walked in, I was welcomed with warm smiles and immediate service. I prepaid over the phone, and I received my pizza in just two minutes. Piping hot, I knew Four Points was my new favorite pizza place. Unlike Donatos, Four Points pizza offers a crunch to their crust. They burn the bottom of their crust lightly to create a mix of texture throughout each bite. They create a crunchy exterior, and soft interior. You are in for a delight when you realize the various options of food available at Four Points. Of course there’s pizza, but Four Points offers more than just the classic. Subs, wings, pasta, tenders, and most importantly, calzones. Calzones! Much like stuffed bread, calzones give you flavors wrapped around a warm crust. When people take a bite, the gooey insides give consumers bursts of spices and cheeses. Truly a delight. I forgot to mention, Four Points also has desserts! I’ll let the names speak for themselves: 4-layer cake and cheesecake…. Yum! Although Four Points is truly amazing, their prices make me wince just a bit. If you’re on a budget, Four Points will just have to be a treat every now and then. One large pepperoni pizza is around $14. That adds up quickly. Again, maybe just for special occasions. Overall, Four Points is the perfect pizza place for students of Olentangy Berlin. It’s perfect for game day, or even after a hard day of school. If you love pizza, Four Points is the place for you. Just a word of advice, get a cup of ranch on the side. Even if you’re not a ranch on pizza person, just trust me. It’s amazing! Let’s give Four Points the recognition it deserves. I hope you enjoy it! FOUR POINTS PIZZA: THE PIZZA THAT GIVES Photo courtesy, Facebook.com VERSACE EROS: THE PERFUME THAT WILL MAKE YOU SWOON You need to get your hands on Versace Eros. This fragrance is astonishing. It’s a stunning mix of scents that left me wanting more. If you’re looking for a fragrance to make you or your significant other left staggering, I would 10 out of 10 recommend this. Let me set up the scene. I was walking through a store in the mall when I smelt something so heavenly. I literally was left reeling. It caught me off guard with such force I stopped walking. Me and my mom were so enamored by the scent that we went searching like hounds to find what it was. We realized a man had walked past us when we smelt the mystifying fumes, and we pretty much ran up to him to ask him what he was wearing. Versace Eros. After I came home that night, I made sure to order this perfume. For whatever significant other I hope to someday have, I will be giving them this to wear. I sound crazy, but I’m telling you this fragrance is life changing. Unlike Chanel Bleu, another men’s fragrance, Versace Eros truly is a game changer. Its scent leaves you feeling expensive and rejuvenated. The scent is laced with hints of lemon zest, fresh mint, and green apple. A blend of scents which when together, causes symptoms of love. I know I experienced these symptoms. Although this fragrance smells great, I will say I’m disappointed with its durability. I sprayed it on my clothes, and in just a few hours I couldn’t smell it anymore. If you’re looking for something long lasting with just a one time spray, this isn’t the fragrance for you. Overall, I’m literally obsessed with this fragrance and encourage readers of this article to purchase a bottle of their own. This fragrance is found in beauty stores like Ulta and Sephora. I even found a bottle of this magical scent potion online at Walmart for just $60. Usually the price of this fragrance ranges from $70-$90. The price is reasonable when considering the bottle size is 3.4 fl oz. Make sure to pick up some for yourself!
