PRE-K - 5TH GRADE
Sagamore Hills Elementary School has served the
community since opening in 1961 and today has a culturally
diverse student body ranging from four-year-olds in our
lottery funded pre-K class to ten-year-olds in our 5th
grade classes. Our school promotes a positive learning
environment and encourages students to strive toward
their potential in intellectual, social, emotional, physical,
and creative development. Five of our classes are comprised of 35 mildly and moderately
handicapped students from our own neighborhood and also from nearby schools.
Sagamore Hills is located in the greater Atlanta, Georgia area. It is a feeder school for
Henderson Middle School and Lakeside High School. The faculty and staff at Sagamore
Hills School are committed to providing quality educational experiences in order for the
students to develop skills necessary for life-long learning.
We believe that:
• All students can learn, achieve and succeed in different ways
• Students learn best when actively engaged in the learning process
• Teachers, parents, and the community share the responsibility for the support of the
school’s mission
• Each student is a valued individual with unique physical, social, emotional, and
intellectual needs
School Goals
Sagamore strives to provide a caring and secure environment, to involve the total
community in the education of children, and to encourage each child to set and achieve
his or her own academic goals. Our focus for the coming year will be writing and
mathematics with a continual emphasis on reading and organizational skills. Our goal is
that all students will demonstrate significant progress in each academic subject and leave
with the skills, knowledge, character, work ethic and habits necessary to ensure success as
they continue their education.

Cliff Valley School
PRIVATE SCHOOL
HISTORY
In 1966 Cliff Valley School was established
as a progressive, cooperative preschool
and kindergarten with the goal of nurturing
children to become confident, independent
learners and responsible, caring members of the community. Located on Clairmont Road,
the preschool has been a resource to the Northeast Atlanta community through several
generations. Cliff Valley School’s expansion through the elementary grades began in
2000, driven by the needs of its families to have their children continue their high-quality
education at the school.
In 2004 our renowned school moved into a new building with facilities for environmental
education (inside and out), earth-friendly building materials, state-of-the-art security,
computers in each elementary classroom, a library/media center, meeting facilities and
much more. The school was designed around the students’ needs and the school’s
philosophy, to construct a warm, friendly environment that fosters creativity and
development.
In 2010-11 we added two new buildings to our campus that include additional classroom
and administrative space, a science lab, a new music room, and a gymnasium with a stage
for performing arts.
Between 2012 and 2018 we widened our programs to have two classes per grade level.
Program growth was intentionally slow, deliberate, and focused on quality.

• A continuous improvement process is essential for our school’s success.
OUR HISTORY
Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Parish was founded in 1956 by Bishop Francis Hyland,
the first bishop of Atlanta. In an effort to provide an excellent Catholic education for this
parish, Monsignor Cornelius Maloney, the first IHM pastor, founded a parish school. The
Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart were asked to staff the school. Sister Gerald Ann Higgins
was named the first principal.
When the school opened its doors in August 1958, it welcomed 238 students in grades
1-7. An 8th grade was added the following year. By 1969 the growth of the school called
for the construction of a new wing, the Middle School annex, with additional classrooms,
a library and a gym. The Kindergarten
program was introduced the same
year. Two years later, in 1971, IHM
School was fully accredited by the Mission
Southern Association of Colleges and
Schools (SACS). As a diverse Catholic community,
Immaculate Heart of Mary School models
Gospel values and strives to achieve
excellence so as to develop positive,
productive Christians serving society.
The rapid growth of the parish and school demanded the expansion and modernization
of the IHM campus. The 1990s was a decade of new construction for the school and
refurbishing for the church.
Renovations included a new school library and administrative offices.
The most recent decade has been full of accomplishments as well. In the 2018-2019 school
year, we celebrated our 60th anniversary as a vibrant church and school community! With
a newly renovated computer lab equipped with a 3-D printer and VR goggles, additional
playground equipment and an outdoor basketball court, IHM continues to identify ways to
engage their students’ minds and bodies.
IHM School is accredited
by AdvancED, the parent
company of SACS and is
recognized as a National Blue
Ribbon School of Excellence
by the U.S. Department of
Education.

Brookhaven
WERE ALL TOGETHER
Brookhaven is a city in DeKalb County, Ga., in the metro Atlanta area. Brookhaven officially
became a city in 2012. The city stretches over 12 square miles with a population of about
50,000.
The City of Brookhaven is a City Manager form of government. The elected council is
composed of four members and a mayor with a professional manager who manages the
day-to-day operations.
The Peachtree Creek Greenway is the
City of Brookhaven’s section of the
larger proposed 12.3-mile North Fork
Peachtree Creek Trail that is envisioned
to link to the wider Atlanta trail system.
The Peachtree Creek Greenway is to be
“active and passive, featuring a paved
trail for bicycling, walking, running with
separate soft trails; easily accessible to all; a means for land conservation and improving
environmental quality; and connected to other regional trails.” The goal of the greenway
is to provide residents with close-to-home and close-to-work access to bicycle and
pedestrian trails, serve transportation and recreation needs, and help encourage quality of
life and sustainable economic growth.
The PATH Foundation delivered 100% design and engineering documents for Phase I of
the Greenway (North Druid Hills Rd. to Briarwood Rd.) and gave an overview for City
Council at the August 14, 2018 Work Session. The official groundbreaking for construction
activities took place on Dec. 12, 2018. Construction is expected to be complete in 4Q 2019.

Callanwolde Fine Arts Center
PREK - 5TH GRADE
The Callanwolde Fine Arts Center is a community arts conservatory and renowned venue
located on a historic 12-acre campus in the heart of Atlanta. It is owned and operated by
the Callanwolde Foundation, Inc., a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with the mission of
preserving, restoring, and developing the Callanwolde Estate to be the premiere public
arts and cultural center.
How Callanwolde Began
Callanwolde, the magnificent Tudor Revival style home of the Charles Howard Candler
family, was completed in 1920. Howard Candler, the oldest son of Asa Griggs Candler
(founder of The Coca-Cola Company), was the President of The Coca-Cola Company from
1916 to 1923.
The Candler Family
Callanwolde was the home of the family of Charles Howard Candler (1878-1957) from 1920
until 1959.
Howard Candler was the oldest son of Asa Griggs Candler (1851-1929), the Atlanta
pharmacist who, in 1891 purchased the rights to the formula for Coca-Cola, which had
been developed by another Atlanta pharmacist, John S. Pemberton, in 1886 as a tonic for
most common ailments.
Howard Candler attended public Fall Registration is Now Open! Visit

a Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory to explore available classes.
College (a Methodist Episcopal institution
that was at that time located in Oxford,
Georgia). While in Oxford in 1895, Howard
Candler received a keg of Coca-Cola syrup
from his father that he shared with his
classmates — the first Coca-Cola ever seen there.
After graduating from Emory in 1898, Howard Candler attended Atlanta College of
Physicians and Surgeons for two years and the University of Bellvue Hospital Medical
College for one year. Much later in life, in 1942, he received the Doctor of Laws degree
from Emory University, which was by then located in Atlanta.
In 1903, Howard Candler married Flora Harper Glenn. The couple had three children,
Charles Howard, Jr. (born 1904), Catherine Harper (Mrs. William Warren) (born 1906), and
Mary Louisa (Mrs. Alfred Eldredge) (born 1912).
The Candlers, Coca-Cola and Emory
University
Emory University has been, and still
is today, frequently called “Coca-Cola
U” because of the long and generous
history of patronage by both the
Candler family and the Coca-Cola
Company that they founded.
In 1914, the decision was made to
move Emory College from Oxford,
Georgia. Howard’s uncle, Bishop
Warren Akin Candler, was President
of Emory College and the Chairman
of the Methodist Episcopal Education
Commission. Atlanta’s Chamber of Commerce pledged $500,000 if the new Emory
University would locate in the city, and in 1915 Asa Griggs Candler donated a $1,000,000
endowment to the institution.
In 1915, Henry Hornbostel was engaged to design the new Emory campus in the Druid
Hills neighborhood of Atlanta. The following year, Howard Candler, who had been a vice
president of Coca-Cola since 1906, became the company’s president, a position he held
until his retirement from the company in 1923 (following its acquisition by the Woodruffs).
His new position as head of the company meant that Howard Candler would now be the
principal benefactor of Emory University. Work on his new home, Callanwolde, was begun
the following year near the Emory campus and designed by Hornbostel.
In 1929, Howard Candler became chairman of the board of trustees of Emory University,
a position he held until his death in 1957. He continued the family’s history of generous
financial support of the institution as well. In 1947, for example, he gave the University
assets valued in excess of $15,000,000.
And, two years following Howard Candler’s death, his widow donated the Callanwolde
estate, along with many of the original furnishings, to Emory University. Emory
subsequently sold the property to the First Christian Church, which retained ownership
until the citizens of DeKalb County rallied to acquire Callanwolde in 1971.
