Ability Awareness

Ariyanna Brown

What is Ability Awareness?

Ability awareness is the understanding, accepting and appreciating an individual's
ability differences.

Importance:

It is very important to recognize that everyone should be treated the same no
matter their difference in ability, no one should ever be left out. This goes for
teachers, as well as the students.

Accommodations:

There are ways you can accommodate lessons or tasks without altering them for
the whole class. You could provide designated readers, allow time for breaks,
extend test time, use a larger font.

It is important to make these accommodations to help make the student feel more
comfortable in the classroom.

Final Word:

It is important to recognize different abilities and make sure that you are
accommodating towards their needs. The student should feel just like the rest of
their peers, and should never feel out of place or different. It's very important that
the student is in a happy, friendly and functional school environment.
