PRE-ASSESSMENT DETAILED ANALYSIS (COMMON CORE STANDARDS)
MGSE5.OA Operations and Algebraic Thinking
• Write and interpret numerical expressions.
o MGSE5.OA.1 Use parentheses, brackets, or braces in numerical expressions, and
evaluate expressions with these symbols.
▪ Evaluate numerical expressions (5-O.4)
MGSE5.NBT Number and Operations in Base Ten
• Understand the place value system.
o MGSE5.NBT.1 Recognize that in a multi-digit number, a digit in one place represents 10
times as much as it represents in the place to its right and 1/10 of what it represents in
the place to its left.
▪ Place value (5-A.2)
▪ Place values in decimal numbers (5-G.4)
o MGSE5.NBT.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm
(or other strategies demonstrating understanding of multiplication) up to a 3 digit by 2
digit factor.
• Multiply 2-digit numbers by 2-digit numbers (5-C.13)
5.NF Number and Operations – Fractions
Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract fractions.
• MGSE5.NF.1 Add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators by finding
a common denominator and equivalent fractions to produce like denominators.
o Convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers (5-K.6)
Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to multiply and divide fractions.
• MGSE5.NF.3 Interpret a fraction as division of the numerator by the denominator (a/b = a ÷ b).
Solve word problems involving division of whole numbers leading to answers in the form of
fractions or mixed numbers, e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the
problem.
o Fractions of a whole: word problems (5-K.2)

MGSE6.NS The Number System
• Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division to divide fractions by
fractions.
o MGSE6.NS.1 Interpret and compute quotients of fractions, and solve word problems
involving division of fractions by fractions, including reasoning strategies such as using
visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem.
▪ Divide whole numbers by unit fractions using models (6-L.1)
▪ Divide fractions and mixed numbers (6-L.7)
▪ Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions (6-O.7)
▪ Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two fractions: word problems (6-O.8)
• Compute fluently with multi-digit numbers and find common factors and multiples.
o MGSE6.NS.2 Fluently divide multi-digit numbers using the standard algorithm.
▪ Divisibility rules (6-C.1)
▪ Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two whole numbers (6-O.1)
o MGSE6.NS.3 Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit decimals using the
standard algorithm for each operation.
▪ Multiply decimals (6-H.2)
▪ Divide decimals by whole numbers (6-H.4)
▪ Add, subtract, multiply, or divide two decimals (6-O.4)

PRE-ASSESSMENT DETAILED ANALYSIS (COMMON CORE STANDARDS)
OVERALL
STRENGTHS
• Understands place value (whole numbers)
• Understands concept of place value for decimals
• Uses logic and keywords to figure out word problems
• Understand concept of multiplying fractions
• Understands concept of multiplying decimals
• Understands concept of dividing decimals
• Understands concept of adding, subtracting, and multiplying whole numbers
• Understands concept and application of adding and subtracting fractions with like
denominators
• Understands concept and application of converting mixed number to improper
fraction
CHALLENGES
• Calculation error when multiplying decimals (put decimal in wrong place)
• Calculation error when multiplying fractions (knows multiplication but rushed)
• Initially forgot how to divide decimals but did not complete application correctly
o Once subtracted 5 from 8 used remainder 3 as part of the quotient
• Concept error for dividing fractions
• Understands Order of Operation (PEMDAS) except when there are parenthesis
o Does not know how to complete application process
• Calculation error for multiplying 2 or more whole numbers
o Did not follow through with writing product of 2tens x 8 in 25 x 18
• Application concern – Michael solved problem 46 because he knew a quarter was 25
which is ¼ of 100. Not sure he’d be apply to correctly answer if word problem did
not have fraction and whole number he was familiar with
• Application error when converting written to standard on decimal place value
o Did not realize was a decimal until we began discussing his answer
RECOMMENDATIONS
• Review 5th grade and 6th grade application of Number Operations and Systems
• Check work for multiplication or addition errors before turning it in
• Write rules or steps on scratch paper (show work paper)
• Take notes and write clearly
