This gives us immense joy and satisfaction to introduce our very
own eco magazine “Haritham”. Just like the Gods and the Asuras
churned the ocean of milk to extract the nectar, we have tried to
churn out creativity from this mess of knowledge . A lot of effort has
*
gone into the making of this issue. The best thing about this issue is that
it represents the creative side of eco club members to a fair degree-
something that we think we all need to reconnect with. This time we
have made an attempt to bring out the talent concealed within our
student community. This issue includes articles, poems, art-works
e t c .We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we have enjoyed
making it.
Any suggestions or criticism on the magazine would be most welcome

Climate crisis has hit the headlines. Reports on global warming and
carbon footprint devour news columns. But the national attempts to effect
carbon cuts have always been skewed. Experts say that 40 percent of
amphibian species, one-third of coral reefs and one–third of marine animals
are at risk of disappearing forever. It is obvious that unprecedented climate
change is accelerating the die-offs. But the biggest concern is the reckless
human land use and the fact that we have been so imprudent with Earth’s
resources.
Cities are growing fast. By 2020, two-thirds of the world’s
population will live in urban areas. This implies that cities will keep
*
expanding its carbon footprint. The need of the hour is smart
planning , solutions rooted in science and strong partnerships. We need cities
that are nature-inclusive. We need to work on green city designs that
integrate nature’s benefits to urban residents.
Eco clubs are rife in schools. Apparently, we need to have a renewed focus
on ecology. The accent of such Eco clubs should be on initiatives that better
relationships between living beings and their surroundings. A few isolated
initiatives will not suffice. There has to be a sustained effort.
I wish ‘Haritham’ goes a long way in promoting “go green”
approach among students, staff, parents and the communities at large in
Kuwait.
God bless

Eco clubs in schools will empower students to participate and take up
meaningful environmental activities and projects. It is a forum through which
students can reach out to influence, engage their parents and neighborhood
communities to promote sound environmental behavior. It will empower
students to explore environmental concepts and actions beyond the confines
of a syllabus or curriculum. While everyone, everywhere, asserts the
importance of ‘learning to live sustainably,’ environment remains a peripheral
issue in the formal schooling system. It is not just an extracurricular activity
but will be made a priority subject in the national curriculum.
*
An Environment Club is beneficial to a school for many reasons but it
will never reach its full potential if only one or two members of staff and a few
children are only involved. An ECO club will help to promote, monitor and
operate the environment activities of the school and more students and staff
need to be encouraged to be involved in the programmes operated and
monitored by the club.. The entire school community need to fully understand
the true importance and value of the club and the programmes they develop
and run. All too often environment clubs in schools are seen as a token
gesture .........allowing a school to say they have such a club and that the
school cares about the environment.
4
The true importance and benefit from having such a club is lost in
such schools. The school environment club should be seen as the driving force
behind all environmental and sustainable activities at the school. Organizing,
Publicizing, Promoting, Monitoring all environmental/sustainability events,
activities and programmes. An ECO club is very important as it establishes a
focal point for all environmental/sustainability activities and programmes in
the school and creating a sustainable campus in keeping with the principals of
the government. Teachers, staff and parents need to be encouraged to become
actively involved in the club’s activities. One person, one teacher cannot cover
*
all the potential activities of the Eco Club. It should be the responsibility of the
club to devise, run and monitor school wide activities such as the reducing,
reusing and recycling programmes, energy saving schemes, promotional events.
The students should report the outcome and/or findings of the programmes/
activities to the staff and senior management.
I wish the team of IES eco club the very best and I want to see the club come out
with concrete plans of the sustainable activities chosen by the club members.
Best wishes,
T. Premkumar
Principal

The Tree
I looked at the valley to find some peace
And found a tree so pale and lovely
With leaves underneath
That crumble under our footsteps
It has leaves so golden with orange
Which resembles a man so red with rage

Stand basking in the bright sunset
In order to catch a moment’s attention

A few years to live happily
