AFA President’s Welcome
WELCOME BACK TO TEXAS
It is after a much-awaited 18 months that we are able to come
back together for another jam-packed week sharing education
and camaraderie. We are so very thankful to finally be able to host
the 50th Annual Convention here in Arlington, TX. I have been
honored to have had the ability to work with an amazing team for
the past year and would like to thank everyone for the support in
keeping our great association thriving.
Obviously, the past year has presented many challenges for all
of us, but we have overcome so much by working together for
the common end goal. With this being an incredibly special
anniversary, we have a full schedule and some outstanding
events to recognize many people for the countless hours they
have devoted to making the AFA what it has become today. We
would like to thank the TPFA for being a tremendous host once
again, and we hope you get as much out of this week as we have
from putting it together. I hope everyone has a safe and fun week,
and I look forward to visiting with you all.
Happy 50th!
Respectfully,
Jon Johnson, CJF
President, American FarriersAssociation

FIA President’s Welcome 7
Hello, Farriers from All Over!
I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you to the GREAT STATE
OF TEXAS!!
If you were here the last time the AFA Convention was in Arlington,
you might remember that you had to use Uber to go anywhere.
Arlington has changed a lot around the Expo Center, and it’s going
to make going out a lot simpler for our attendees. So, finding a great
place to eat and visit with your peers in the farrier industry will be
easily accomplished this year.
I know you are attending the Convention to learn and be involved
in many different things that are going on. To help you during your
visit, the Texas Professional Farriers Association will be offering an
information center near the registration desk, so please visit us for
anything you need while in town! You’ll also be able to purchase
tickets for our OFA/TPFA raffle trailer that supports our Injured
Farriers Fund.
On behalf of the members of the Farrier Industry Association, and
especially those of us here exhibiting in the MarketPlace – we’re
glad you’re here! Please plan to join us in the exhibit hall during the
special events and any time it’s open, as we have a lot of great tools
and items to share with you! Further, the auction during the Grand
Finale banquet will be loaded with great handmade items and
products from both farriers and FIA members, so be sure to check
those out during the week and plan to bid on some super items to
support the AFA!
Finally, we greatly appreciate you doing everything in your power
to keep yourself and others safe during this great event. We know
there has been a lot going on, but we are also confident that
we’ve created the safest possible onsite experience for you all. I
look forward to seeing you around this week! Cheers to the 50th
Anniversary!

TPFA Chapter President’s Letter
On behalf of the Texas Professional Farriers Association, I welcome you
to Arlington!
We are honored to have been selected to host the AFA 50th
Anniversary Convention, and we truly hope to help make your
convention experience a memorable one! There are several things
to do within walking distance of the Arlington Expo Center and the
Sheraton Arlington hotel, that is if you and your guests can find any
time in an already fun-packed schedule!
If you need anything while onsite, please stop by the TPFA information
center, or find me in the hallways or in one of the events. Any member
of our Chapter will be happy to help you with whatever you need!
Once again, it is an honor to serve as the Host Chapter for this very
special event, and we thank you for sharing your very limited and
valuable time with us!

Thank You to Our Volunteers
WE SIMPLY COULD NOT DO THIS WITHOUT YOU
Celebrating 50 years together is a remarkable achievement, and for nearly
all of those years, the American Farrier’s Association Annual Convention
has been a cornerstone of what we all love and value the most about our
association. Combining renowned speakers, hands-on demonstrations, the
National Forging & Horseshoeing Competition, certification opportunities,
achievement awards, a fantastic auction, networking events and a robust
Farrier Industry Association MarketPlace, our convention is a massive
undertaking that only comes together due to the efforts of volunteers from
numerous committees, and from all over the country.
Led once again by our Convention Coordinating Committee Chairman, Jon Members of the 2021
Johnson, CJF (current AFA President) and his Co-Chair, Pat Burton, CJF, our Convention Coordinating
volunteers and staff spend hundreds of hours engaged in planning a daily Committee
convention schedule with exceptional speakers and events that all attendees
will find engaging. Our Rules Committee, led by Justin Fry, CJF, works CHAIRMAN
diligently to put on a fair and exciting competition that features some of the Jon Johnson, CJF
best competitors and judges in the world. Craig Stark, CJF, our Certification CO-CHAIRMAN:
Committee Chairman, and his team, plan and execute opportunities to allow Pat Burton, CJF
our attendees to continue their journey towards achieving their certification RULES COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN
and endorsement goals. Pre-Certification Chairman, Hank Chisholm, CJF, Justin Fry, CJF
alongside our Certification Instructors, work hard to produce hands-on FIA MARKETPLACE CHAIR
demonstration stations that allow attendees to learn through practical Emily Bull
application. Whatever you are looking to learn, accomplish, or achieve during MEMBERS
the AFA convention, our volunteers have made it happen. Caren Cartwright (AFA Administration)
And of course, since we are celebrating 50 years, we’ve had even more help Melanie Fransen (AFA/FIA Administration)
this year in planning special events to recognize and thank the many men and Martha Jones (AFA/FIA Executive Director)
women who have selflessly devoted their time and talent to make the AFA what Andrew Wells, CJF
it has become today. With that, I’d like to thank Eric Nygaard, CJF, our Historical HOST CHAPTER
& Memorial Council Chairman, for the many hours he’s spent helping us create Texas Professional Farriers Association (TPFA)
moments this week that we will all treasure for years to come.
But even beyond those very integral elements, volunteers throughout the Committee Contributors
week work tremendously hard to ensure your experience is everything you
could have hoped for. They help our staff at registration, work hard to ensure ACHIEVEMENT COMMITTEE
the contest floor is a safe and fun experience for both the competitors and Tim Koelln, CJF (Chairman)
attendees, lead lectures that are informative and educational, work late into AMERICAN FARRIERS TEAM
the night to ensure the integrity of our election ballot count, and produce a Travis Smith, CJF (Team Manager)
Grand Finale that is a tremendous experience – not just for those receiving CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE
awards – but for all of us in attendance. Craig Stark, CJF (Chairman)
And each year, a local AFA host chapter provides the “extra” that’s needed to COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE
pull off this outstanding event. From providing members to help in all aspects Heather Beauchemin, CJF, TE (Chairman)
of the event to assisting with any special needs while we’re in town, and from HISTORICAL & MEMORIAL COUNCIL
helping with logistics to providing assistance with our Grand Finale, the host Eric Nygaard, CJF (Chairman)
chapter goes above and beyond to ensure our convention runs seamlessly. NOMINATIONS & ELECTIONS COMMITTEE
This year, the Texas Professional Farriers Association, led by President, Danny Don Gustafson, CJF (Chairman)
Anderson, CJF, has stepped up to the plate for us once again. Special thanks PRE-CERTIFICATION COMMITTEE
to all the members of the TPFA for your enthusiasm and efforts – you are Hank Chisholm, CJF (Chairman)
sincerely appreciated. RULES COMMITTEE
We are well aware that it is only because of all of these volunteers that we’re Justin Fry, CJF (Chairman)
able to continue to produce an event unlike any other in our industry. And it is
our hope that as you see them dashing from one event to the next this week,
you’ll take a minute to thank them for their contributions. For 50 years, we
have been – and will continue to be – incredibly grateful for their efforts and
dedication. We simply could not do this without them.

CONVENTION SPEAKERS Amy Armentrout, DVM, MS, DACVS AMY ARMENTROUT, DVM, MS, DACVS
Brent Barrett, DVM, CJF Dr. Amy Armentrout was born and raised in southern Nevada and attended the University
of Nevada for her bachelor’s degrees. She then graduated from Colorado State University
with honors in 2006 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree. Following the
completion of her degree, she obtained an internship at Pioneer Equine Hospital, in
Oakdale, CA, a referral center specializing in equine lameness and surgery that had an
on-site podiatry center. After her internship, she stayed at PEH for one year as an associate,
continuing to work with some of the best veterinarians and farriers in the country.
Dr. Armentrout then completed a surgical residency at Kansas State University in 2011,
where she earned her master’s degree in clinical sciences with a focus on equine lameness.
She became a board-certified surgeon in 2012 and is currently recognized as a Diplomate
of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.
Dr. Armentrout is certified in veterinary acupuncture, as well as certified in animal
chiropractor by the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association. Using a combination of
her advanced lameness diagnostic skills, chiropractic care, and acupuncture, she has been
helping her patients to stay in the best physical state and to compete at increasingly high
levels of competition.
Dr. Armentrout is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners
(AAEP), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American College of
Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA).
Topic: Surgical & Soundness Considerations for the Foot
As veterinarians, we are often trying to achieve high levels of performance on a client-
dictated schedule. Without appropriate farrier care and an excellent farrier-veterinarian
relationship, soundness goals cannot be reliably achieved. Additionally, surgical outcomes
are often reliant upon excellent post-operative care, where the farrier is usually the
key player in determining success. The way the horse interacts with the ground affects
the health of the entire musculoskeletal system, and the health of the musculoskeletal
system affects the health of the horse. Farrier care is a key component of health, not just
soundness.
BRENT BARRETT, DVM, CJF
Dr. Brent Barrett is a veterinarian and certified journeyman farrier practicing in Ocala,
Florida. His practice, Barrett Equine Lameness and Podiatry, includes lameness work, foot
related surgeries, general podiatry, and consults. Dr. Barrett has given multiple clinics and
lectures throughout the US to both farriers and veterinarians. He believes education is the
key to bridging the gap between veterinarians, farriers, and owners, resulting in the best
possible outcome for the horse.
Topic: Support Materials: Options to Help Horses & Avoid Complications
We will discuss when support materials are indicated, different options and their varying
functions, and how to avoid pressure overloads.
SHAYNE CARTER, CJF, MS
Shayne started working with his father before he began elementary school. At age five,
he would hand tools to him; at age 11, he was trimming horse hooves, and by 13 he
was shoeing. He had his own farrier business in high school, taking the horses his dad
couldn’t get to. After being rejected by local farriers for an apprenticeship, Shayne looked
elsewhere to get an education. He found Jay Sharp in Salmon, ID. Jay taught advanced
farrier classes, but more importantly Jay taught Shayne a lot about forge work. To further
educate himself he went to many different clinics in neighboring states, which usually
had contests afterwards. Shayne was a quick learner and very diligent in his practice. He
feels that competition made him a better farrier for his everyday work shoeing horses. He
developed his talents, but not without a lot of hard work.
In 1984, Shayne was the first American to win the World Champion Blacksmith
Competition (WCBC) held in conjunction with the Calgary Stampede. As a matter of fact,
he was the only American who won this prestigious title until 1999. Shayne is still the
youngest participant to win the WCBC title at age 23.
28 2021 AFA CONVENTION | ARLINGTON TEXAS
Shayne Carter, CJF, MS Over the years, Shayne has been very active in competitions, winning spots on the American CONVENTION SPEAKERS
Blane Chapman, CJF Farriers Team in 1986, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1997 and 1998. Shayne was the Team Captain
(National and Overall High Point Winner) several of the years he was on the team.
A very meaningful award, to him, was in 1998 when he received the Jim Linzy Outstanding
Clinician Award.
Shayne travels all over the world teaching clinics to other farriers and knife makers. Both are
trades one can never master, and it is a continual educational process. He not only teaches
other farriers horseshoeing skills, but he also teaches tool making. He is very advanced in
his blacksmithing, as well, and makes beautiful decorative and functional items such as coat
racks, gates, and dragons. Shayne is also a Master Bladesmith from the American Bladesmith
Society. His knives can be seen at ShayneCarterKnives.com.
In 2000, Shayne was voted “Farrier Industry Legend”. This was awarded to the top 25 most
influential contributors to the farrier industry. And finally, in 2003, he was inducted into the
International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame.
In 2016, Shayne was on Season 3 of Forged In Fire, winning the $10,000 prize. The family
council decided to go to Manual Antonio in Costa Rica for two weeks (IT WAS AWESOME!), and
he returned for another episode “Champion of Champions” where he placed 2nd to his friend
Travis Wuertz.
This trade, which is very beloved to Shayne, has taken him all over the world, including
England, Scotland, France, Alberta, Quebec, Japan, and nearly every state in America.
Shayne and Trisha have been married nearly 30 years and have 6 children, including two boys,
Chance and Riley. Chance works with Shayne shoeing horses and Riley loves blacksmithing/
bladesmithing, but not enough to make it a profession. Additionally, they have four girls,
Trudy, Babe (Shaylee), Clover and Eva. Trudy has 4 children. Chance, Riley and Babe all got
married in less than a year, but they still come home to haul hay. The kids can’t believe their
dad has more followers on Instagram than they do!
Topic 1: 49 Years of Horseshoeing
Shayne will speak on many topics that he has learned over the years. As can be noted from
Shayne’s bio, he has had many unique experiences and opportunities. Tune in to Shayne’s
lecture to grab nuggets of wisdom gleaned from 49 years of horseshoeing.
Topic 2: Demonstration on Damascus Steel & Knife Making
With knife making becoming a popular hobby, turned “side-gig” for many, this is a great
opportunity to learn from a master bladesmith. Shayne will use this time to discuss and
demonstrate methods using Damascus steel.
BLANE CHAPMAN, CJF
Blane Chapman, CJF is a Certified Journeyman Farrier from Lubbock, Texas. Blane is a 1993
graduate of Texas A&M University where he received his degree in Rangeland Ecological and
Management, and in 1996, he completed the master’s program at Sul Ross State University
in Animal Science. Blane has been a noted speaker for events including TEVA, the Southwest
Veterinary Symposium, and the American Farrier’s Association National Convention, as well as
a clinician/consultant for Mustad USA. Blane has a mixed farrier practice, and his experience
in treating difficult lameness cases has made him widely recognized and called upon when
many conventional shoeing applications have failed. Currently, Blane is the farrier for Brock
Veterinary Clinic in La Mesa, Texas and the 6666 Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. Blane is an avid
horseman and team roper. Blane’s ability to convey his ideas and shoeing protocols will give
you a solid baseline to take home and put into practice.
Topic: Hoof Angles, Hoof Maps, and Horseshoes
This lecture will discuss what I’ve learned in 35 years of horseshoeing. Simplifying the process,
three hoof angles we should know and how we can address them, trimming and wise
selection. I will also give you a few other tips on how to shoe from your shop.

AFA 2021 Convention Speakers
CONVENTION SPEAKERS Dusty Franklin, CJF, ASF, AWCF Dusty has been shoeing horses full-time since 1992, after working for his father, who is also a
Jim Keith, CJF Certified Journeyman Farrier, for several years. He has been involved in the horse industry for
over 35 years as a youth competitor and amateur competitor showing horses and competing in
farrier contests beginning at the age of 20.
In 1995, Dusty began working towards his Certified Farrier certification. Soon after, he
earned his certification as a Certified Journeyman Farrier. In 1996, Dusty began competing in
horseshoeing competitions around the United States and Canada, advancing from a Division
I competitor to the Open Division within one year. Dusty was asked to become an American
Farrier’s Association Certification Tester in 1997 and traveled to certifications working with

Examiner in 1997 and traveled to certifications working with Examiners and became an
Examiner in 2003. He is currently one of twenty Examiners within the AFA that certify farriers
under its current guidelines. Dusty competed at the Convention Competition earning a spot
on the American Farriers Association Team in February of 2009. He was also nominated by
members of the American Farrier’s Association as “Outstanding Educator”, “Outstanding
Clinician” and “Edward Martin Humanitarian Award” in 2009 and was awarded the 2010
“Outstanding Educator”. Dusty has co-written flash card system for preparing for the
certification process called “Let’s Get Practical” which is sold throughout the United States.
Dusty has been given the opportunity to attend and give clinics in Brazil, Canada, England,
South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and throughout the United States.
Dusty has competed as a competitor on the American Farriers Team in 2009 & 2010 and
the World Championship Blacksmith Team in 2012 and 2015. He also won the hard-earned
Stonewell Striker of the Year for 2011. He has completed the F.I.T.S. Exam (Farrier International
Testing System) which is an international farrier testing system in several different countries
and is now an Examiner with that organization and believes in further education through
competition, certification, and clinics. In 2017, Dusty traveled to England and earned the title of
Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers.
Although often seen as a competitor and certification Examiner, Dusty is proud of his
accomplishments as an Educator at Five Star Horseshoeing School and the education that he is
able to provide the students that come through the school as well as those passing through for

Topic: Shoeing for Functionality Using Anatomy
Learning to shoe horses based on the functionality of anatomy instead of theory is paramount
to understanding what we should be doing for the horse. Once we learn anatomy and the way a
horse uses its body, we are enabled to do what is best for the horse so that it may be able to do
its job and have longevity.
JIM KEITH, CJF
After shoeing his first horse in the 1950s, Jim Keith continued that journey until 2018. He
worked as a farrier mostly full time through the years, but did alternate to part-time on several
occasions, such as when he was managing the registered cattle and horse operation for a large
ranch.
He received his CJF in 1983, as one of only about 12 in the USA at that time. He updated three
times in the following years as the criteria changed on the testing procedure.
At 43 years of age, he began competing in regional and national competitions and continued
until about 2013. During that time, he has seen huge improvements in the abilities of American
farriers to forge their own shoes and tools.
He was a regular competitor at the Calgary Stampede World Championship Blacksmith Contest
for several decades, placing in the top ten in the world each decade and winning the shoeing in
1991. Jim has won the creative blacksmith title at Calgary several times.
He has judged the Calgary competition and AFA Convention contest three times each, along
with the Brazilian and Japanese National Championships, and most recently, the WCB finals in
Fort Worth, Texas.
Jim also designed a curriculum for a vocational school program and taught it for 14 years. He
has served on the AFA Board of Directors and as Chairman for the Registry of Farrier Educators,
along with holding offices in the New Mexico Professional Horseshoers Association and TriState
Farriers Association. He was also manager of the American Farriers Team for a brief time. In 1994,
Jim was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame.
30 2021 AFA CONVENTION | ARLINGTON TEXAS
Jim manufactured the TFT brand of horseshoes, as well as farrier and blacksmith tools under the
name of Jim Keith Tools. Both businesses were sold in 1998 and 2016, respectively. Jim continued
to shoe horses for another two years before confining his activities to drawing and writing.
Topic: Looking Back: A Brief History of my Relationship with the AFA
The talk will begin with a description of what it was like for a young person to get started in the
profession before the advent of the American Farrier’s Association, and progresses on to my
first experiences with a group that stood for the betterment of horses and horseshoers. Then
on to the many changes that came about because of the interaction among many practitioners
of different skill levels and experiences. There will be some contrasts made of “then and now”,
and perhaps some thoughts on what may need to come. Of course, the presentation will be
based upon my personal experiences, with full realization that other old horseshoers will have a
different story to tell.
Ray Legel, CJF RAY LEGEL, CJF CONVENTION SPEAKERS
Ray comes to you from Waverly, Iowa. He was the first Iowan to join the AFA (#A-657, now regular
member #2253). Ray was the first Iowan to pass the present day AFA CJF test, and he co-founded
the Iowa Professional Farriers Association in 1984.
Ray has had articles published in the American Farriers Journal, the Draft Horse Journal, and
Western Horseman. He self-published a book he wrote, “Tales of a Horseshoer!” in 2002.
He was the first farrier from the U.S. to be asked to do a clinic in Brazil in 1989; however he had his
passport in hand when his back went out. Ray called Grant Moon and Grant flew down and did
the one week clinic. This opened the door for many U.S. farriers to go down and do clinics. Ray has
mentored countless beginning farriers.
Ray is the second Iowan to be inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame in 2009.
He has shod or trimmed over 100,000 head of horses, mules and donkeys, 33 sheep, 4 goats and 1
potbellied pig.
In January 1987, Ray made the decision to move to Texas where horseshoeing isn’t so seasonal.
He left 224 Iowa customers and moved to Gainesville. Four days later he landed 269 horses for the
Carol Rose Ranch, 50 head of Cutting horses for EE Ranches of Texas that Guy Wood was training,
and one other barn with 40 head of Cutting horses. Later on, Lazy E Ranches from Guthrie, OK
hauled down a trailer load of lame horses to Carol’s for him to shoe every six weeks.
Ray is a U.S. Army veteran, having spent a tour in Vietnam in 1967-68 with the 11th Armoured
Cavalry. Ray is now retired, does small engine repair and plays the guitar and sings at nursing
homes.
Topic: Blasts from the Past
What really causes navicular issues? Repair toe & quarter cracks without lacing, patching or using
acrylics. Handmade heart bars that are perfect every time. Never miss a forge weld using Borax for
flux. Applying hospital plates without tapping.
Dennis C. Manning, CJF DENNIS C. MANNING, CJF
For more than forty years Mr. Manning operated a blacksmith horseshoeing forge in remote, rural
Loka, Utah. Most tools, and all horseshoes used in the forge, were hand forged. Seven sons each
took their turn working with their father, two eventually becoming professional farriers. His son
Jacob presently serves on the AFA Board of Directors.
Mr. Manning, AFA Member #270 since 1977, was involved in the formation of the internationally
acclaimed AFA Certification program. Over the years, besides conducting AFA Certification exams,
he also presented horseshoeing and tool making clinics throughout the United States and Canada,
as well as in Japan and Australia. Most recently, after retiring from shoeing horses in 2015, Mr.
Manning volunteered two terms as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
serving a total of three years in the islands of the Philippines.
Mr. Manning has many accolades including: AFA Board of Directors - several terms between 1982 –
2015, AFA Certification Examiner 30 plus years – Chairman 17 years, American Farriers Team/North
American Horseshoeing Team four years, World Champion Horseshoer, Calgary Stampede 1985,
AFA Contest Judge: six times (1985, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2001, 2008), AFA Achievement Awards: Walt
Taylor Award 1992, Jim Linzy Outstanding Clinician 2003, Award for Excellence in Administration
2006, Journalism Award 2014, and was inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame
1994.
Topic: Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
Mr. Manning began as a self-taught ‘cowboy’ horseshoer using cold ‘heel toe’ horseshoes and a
few worn out tools. An old horse trainer eventually hired him, encouraging him to get a forge
and keep improving his skills. After joining the American Farrier’s Association, a whole new world

CONVENTION SPEAKERS Myron McLane, CJF opened. The AFA provided opportunities to learn and develop skills, comradeship with fellow
horseshoers, and perhaps most importantly, opportunities to serve.
Grant Moon, CJF, FWCF
MYRON MCLANE, CJF
32 Myron McLane, a native of Somerset Massachusetts, has over 57 years of experience in shoeing
horses. Myron served an eight-year apprenticeship with Robert O. McCarthy of Medfield,
Massachusetts, shoeing field hunters, jumpers, thoroughbred racehorses and padded horses.
After finishing his apprenticeship, Myron began shoeing Standardbred racehorses in a shop at
Foxboro Raceway in Foxboro, MA. During the eighteen years he spent with the harness horses,
he also kept a general shoeing practice. In 1986, Myron moved into a shop at the veterinarian
practice of Dr. Richard Sheehan in Mansfield, MA. Since then, he worked with Dr. Sheehan until
the doctor’s retirement, as well as with veterinarians and farriers from all over the country,
concentrating on therapeutic shoeing. He continues to maintain his shoeing practice.
Myron is a member of the American Farrier’s Association. In 1982 and 1983, Myron was
a member of the North American Horseshoeing Team, representing the US in shoeing
competitions in the US, England and Scotland. He has received numerous awards including
the AFA Administration Award, Outstanding Clinician of the Year Award, The Walt Taylor
Award (twice) and The Farrier Legend Award, and has been inducted into the International
Horseshoeing Hall of Fame. He served as chair of the AFA Contest and Rules Committee for 29
years, and was also a member of the AFA Convention Planning Committee.
Myron has presented clinics and judged farrier competitions throughout the United States and
abroad. He was an educational consultant for Mustad Inc. for over 25 years and helped in the
development of their glue on shoes and many other products.
He pioneered the use of the Egg-Bar/Heart Bar shoe for the treatment of lameness, other than
laminitis. Myron is the inventor of the “Myron McLane Full Support Pad” and was awarded a US
Patent for the pad. The pad has been invaluable to veterinarians and farriers in the treatment of
hoof capsule lameness. He is also known for his line of “Myron McLane Farrier Aprons”. He is one
of America’s leading farrier educators and is well known as a source of innovative solutions to
lameness problems in horses.
Topic: Using & Understanding Frog Support
Someone once said, “There comes a time when execution is more important than theory.”
Nowhere is that more appropriate than in our trade! Myron will explain the theory, as well as
describe the execution of the theory.
GRANT MOON, CJF, FWCF
Grant Moon is one of the most acclaimed and well-respected farriers in the world. He has
worked for Mustad since 1991 where he has aided in developing farrier products and has given
clinics all around the world.
Grant stresses the importance of promoting good farrier practice, whilst respecting local
traditions and environments. He can give clinics on shoeing hunters, jumpers, and endurance
horses. He also speaks about forge work and how to make it easier. He promotes using less
time and energy and more thinking, showing farriers easy steps to perform solid shoeing more
efficiently.
His accolades are plenty, but here are just a few. Grant has passed the DWCF with honours,
AWCF, FWCF examination and the CJF. He has won the World Championship at Calgary six
times and been runner up four times, member of the American Farriers Team four times and
five-time member of the Welsh Farrier Team, with two wins.

LEE OLSEN, CJF
A horseman at heart, Lee understands the whole horse. His love for horses began early, roping
and training horses on his parents’ cattle and horse ranch in South Dakota from the time he
could hold the reins. In 2007, he graduated from Western Dakota Tech, Rapid City, South Dakota
as an industrial electrician. He rodeoed, both amateur and professionally, for several years
before becoming a farrier. Lee qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo three times and
the Badlands Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals two times. He married Jamie (Lindsay) Olsen in 2008; she
runs barrels, ropes and is a Nurse Practitioner. Lee and Jamie moved to Texas in 2010 and now
have two sons, Trace (9) and Eli (1.5).

Lee Olsen, CJF As an AFA Certified Journeyman Farrier, Lee uses a variety of trusted methods to personalize CONVENTION SPEAKERS
Tom Petersen, CJF care for each horse’s need. He works on some of the top performance horses in multiple
disciplines. Additionally, he is the resident Therapeutic Farrier at Equine Sports Medicine and
Jim Poor, CJF Surgery in Weatherford, Texas and works with several other vet clinics in the area. At Olsen
Equine, continuing education is a priority and is evident in Lee’s practice as well as in his passion
for educating horse owners. Lee is in constant pursuit of improving the quality of equine
hoof care. He teaches shoeing and trimming clinics in various locations and provides helpful
resources for equipping horse owners to best care for their horses. In addition to running a
multi-farrier practice, Lee also runs a 4-year apprenticeship program.
Topic: Not Your Ordinary Performance Horse Shoeing
An in-depth look at proven ways to help struggling performance horses get back into the
winner’s circle. Lee Olsen, CJF, goes over how nontraditional methods of performance horse
shoeing has helped the horses in his business reach their maximum potential. Lee believes that
it takes a combo of traditional and nontraditional style of farriery. Fitting/supporting the hoof
while giving the horse what it needs to perform.
TOM PETERSEN, CJF
Tom Petersen, CJF, started his shoeing career by going to Montana State University’s
horseshoeing program under the instruction of Tom Wolfe in the spring of 2005. After
completion of the program, he apprenticed under multiple farriers in the Gallatin Valley
surrounding Bozeman, Montana for 2-1/2 years. Following his apprenticeship, Tom then
established a successful business in the Gallatin Valley comprised of many disciplines, but
mostly of Rodeo, Ranch, Jumping, and Dressage horses. In 2010, Tom completed his CJF with
the American Farrier’s Association. After receiving his CJF, he went to his first competition in
2011 and was hooked. Over the next few years, Tom rose quickly through the divisions and
earned a spot on the World Championship Blacksmiths (WCB) Team, and he maintained his
spot for five consecutive years - from 2015 to 2019. In 2016 and 2018, Tom was fortunate
enough to win the WCB National Championship title. Also in 2018, he won the very prestigious
World Horseshoeing Classic with the WCB Team. Tom won the AFA’s National Championship
in the spring of 2019 and was the Australasian champion at the EKKA competition in Brisbane
Australia in 2019. He has given clinics and judged contests both in the United States and
foreign countries. Tom feels very humbled and excited to be asked to share his knowledge and
experiences.
Topic: Developing Strategies for Efficiency
Will be discussing strategies to gain better efficiency at both the anvil and the horse, with
a better understanding of how a more mindful approach can benefit the farrier. This will
be followed by demonstrating at the anvil how it can improve forge work and the ability to
evaluate one’s own work.
JIM POOR, CJF
Jim started his horseshoeing career in 1976 working for his father. During this time, he also
worked as a lineman for a highline crew while shoeing clients on the weekends and after work.
It was not until 1983, when he found out about the Texas Professional Farrier’s Association and
started going down to John Marino’s in Peaster every Wednesday night, that he started to learn
how to make horseshoes. Jim went to his first contest in 1985 in Abilene, Texas, his hometown,
and never looked back! He made the American Farriers Team for the first time in 1989, and the
last time in 1999.
There were not a lot of tools on the market back in those days, and since there was not an
abundance of money, Jim started making his own tools as he enjoyed forging and still does to
this day. The tool business was good to him, and he was able to sell more tools than he could
possibly forge. So, Jim, always looking for faster, smarter, and easier ways of doing things,
learned about CNC machines. With the help of his wife, Kathleen, they were off on a new
adventure learning to run those things. Now that that’s done, he is back in the forge again
learning to forge Damascus.
Jim has always been thankful to the members of the AFA and TPFA for their guidance and
friendship. It is hard for him to believe, a boy with an 11th grade education, could see the world
shoeing horses. Jim has made lifetime friendships of many, many members of the AFA and TPFA
associations.
Topic: Tool Maintenance
Jim is going to demonstrate fitting up and re-handling hammer handles and driving hammer
handles. He is also going to demonstrate how to re-set tongs to fit a specific stock size.

Bodie Trnka, CJF Pat graduated from the Midwest Farrier School in 1990 and owned a performance horse farrier
Thomas N Trosin, CF, CTF, CJF practice in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Pat started as the Chief of Farrier Services at New
Bolton Center in 2000, after working at several referral hospitals in New England. Graduating
from the Royal Veterinary College in 2020 with a degree in Equine Locomotor Research, Pat’s
most recent publications involve inertial measurement unit technology to better understand the
biomechanics of the horse and the influence of therapeutic farrier practice.
Topic: Fads in the Farrier Industry: Revisiting Our Response
BODIE TRNKA, CJF
Bodie is a second generation horseshoer who has grown up in the industry and has just never
left. He grew up in New Mexico but has since moved to Minnesota where he lives with his wife,
Rachel, and son, Quincy. In Minnesota, Bodie has a full-time horseshoeing practice. Bodie has an
Agricultural Business degree from New Mexico State University and is a Certified Journeyman
Farrier through the AFA. He’s a four-time American Farriers Team member and past AFA National
Champion, as well as two-time Reserve National Champion. Bodie is also part owner, along with
his family, in the World Championship Blacksmiths, which hosts farrier competitions all over the
country.
Topic: Putting the Basics into Everyday Shoe Making
Focusing on the nuts and bolts of shoes that go on every day in a shoeing practice. Being
proficient, efficient, and understanding what makes handmade horseshoes go on easy. Shapes,
offset, nail placement, heel types and finding a system of knowing how much to cut. Super basic,
but incredibly hard to master.
THOMAS N. TROSIN, CF, CTF, CJF
Thomas N. Trosin is best known in the AFA as a Past President, Board Member and Committee
Chair, but he is first and foremost a farrier.
The son of Harry Trosin and Elinor Trosin, Tom’s first responsibilities in the care of animals were
on his grandfather Alvin’s Wisconsin farm. In 1983 he would move to California where his first
equine job was as a laborer for Carrol Cooper’s small lay-up facility.
In 1985 he would graduate from Oklahoma Farriers College’s eight-week class and get his first
horseshoeing related job in Roy Proctor Jr.’s harness horse shop. He would spend the next two
years going between being a farrier helper and a track groom before he would settle on shoeing
as a career path.
In 1989, Trosin would take advantage of an opportunity and begin his first shoeing practice
on the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. There he would meet Gerald Kunz, and subsequently Ted
Shanks, who opened Tom’s eyes to the endless responsibility of learning the art and science of
horseshoeing. Trosin would return to California later that year and open his own shoeing practice
in Burbank, California in 1990. He would continue his education through clinics and occasionally
donate his money to a contest.
In 2005, Gordon C. Haight would offer Tom a two day every six-week job. Over the next 14 years,
Haight would become his mentor and friend. In 2012, Trosin would move to Oklahoma to be
closer to family. It was there that Dusty Franklin would mentor Tom through the process of
becoming a Certified Journeyman Farrier.
Trosin is a proud member of the American Farrier’s Association, a Life Member of the Western
States Farrier’s Association, a member of the Oklahoma Farrier’s Association and World
Championship Blacksmiths. He currently lives and works in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Topic: Hello, Goodbye, and Everything in Between
Hello is your first impression. Goodbye is your second. In between a lot can go both right and
wrong. Tom is going to talk about conversing with your clients – communicating your needs and
understanding theirs – in order to provide the best service you can for their horses.

Competition Judges 2021 COMPETITION
Bryan Osborne, CJF
Bryan started shoeing in 2002 after attending Kentucky Horseshoeing School (KHS).
Growing up in southern Ohio, he was inspired by Jarrod Moran, who also attended
KHS. Once completing school, Bryan moved to Virginia Beach where he was able
to work with some great guys, including Dennis Butler, Mark Ingram, and Dick
Johnson. After a couple years, he returned to KHS to work for Mitch Taylor where he
continued learning - not only from Mitch, but also Conrad Trow. Bryan was fortunate
to work at the school for 6 years, from 2005-2011. During his time there, he attended
more clinics than he can recount and was chosen to participate in the AFA’s cultural
exchange program. Bryan competed in his first contest in 2006, the same year he
became a Journeyman farrier. In 2010, he made the American Farriers Team for the
first time; he made it again in 2011, 2012 and 2017. Competition for Bryan has been
for fun, but more than that, it has given him the opportunity to learn: not only about
horseshoeing, but also about himself. Having the pressure of competition and being
a part of a team has made him a better person. For the past 11 years, Bryan has
focused on running his shoeing business in Lexington, Kentucky. Given his geographic
location, the practice focuses mainly on off the track thoroughbreds transitioned to
eventing and jumping. Most recently, training apprentices has become Bryan’s new
challenge as he is given the opportunity to give back in betterment of the industry.
Bryan also has a podcast, Perimeter Fit, where he is trying to learn on the job and
hopefully get back into farrier education… “it’s just my style”.
Tom Petersen, CJF
Tom Petersen, CJF, started his shoeing career by going to Montana State University’s
horseshoeing program under the instruction of Tom Wolfe in the spring of 2005. After
completion of the program, he apprenticed under multiple farriers in the Gallatin
Valley surrounding Bozeman, Montana for 2-1/2 years. Following his apprenticeship,
Tom then established a successful business in the Gallatin Valley comprised of many
disciplines, but mostly of Rodeo, Ranch, Jumping, and Dressage horses. In 2010, Tom
completed his CJF with the American Farrier’s Association. After receiving his CJF, he
went to his first competition in 2011 and was hooked. Over the next few years, Tom
rose quickly through the divisions and earned a spot on the World Championship
Blacksmiths (WCB) Team, and he maintained his spot for five consecutive years - from
2015 to 2019. In 2016 and 2018, Tom was fortunate enough to win the WCB National
Championship title. Also in 2018, he won the very prestigious World Horseshoeing
Classic with the WCB Team. Tom won the AFA’s National Championship in the spring
of 2019 and was the Australasian champion at the EKKA competition in Brisbane
Australia in 2019. He has given clinics and judged contests both in the United States
and foreign countries. Tom feels very humbled and excited to be asked to share his
knowledge and experiences.
Bob Slansky, CJF
Bob Slansky is currently a full-time farrier who primarily shoes Saddlebred and Arabian
show horses in Northeast Ohio. After shoeing his first horse in 1980, he went on to
become a Certified Journeyman Farrier with the American Farrier’s Association in 1991.
Bob has been a Tester with the AFA since 2007, all the while helping many along their
journey to a higher level of education. Over the years, he has helped or trained over
11 CJFs, just in his local area. In 2008, Bob made it onto the American Farriers Team. He
has competed extensively including Calgary, Stoneleigh and the AFA Convention. Bob
has been a judge and clinician for over 15 years. While his practice consists of high-
level show horses, his every day, bottom-line teaching is basics and fundamentals.
