Getting to the Bottom of the Veterinary Technician
Shortage in Minnesota By Dr. Al Balay
This is the second of at least 4 articles from the MVMA’s Veterinary Technicians Committee. The
first article focused on terminology and the current process for voluntary certification of veterinary
technicians in Minnesota. This article will detail some of the potential reasons for the shortage of
veterinary technicians as well as other information. Future articles will focus on the issues of the
shortage and the steps and costs of mandatory credentialing of veterinary technicians.
The MVMA Veterinary Technicians Committee would like to engage you in more conversation about
mandatory credentialing in Minnesota. The committee believes that mandatory credentialing
will lead to less career turnover, greater retention, and less shortages of veterinary technicians
in Minnesota. Committee members are investigating retention data in different States as well as
AVMA, National Association of Veterinary Technicians (NAVTA), and AAVSB (American Association
of Veterinary State Boards) on information related to model practice acts and scope of practice

Collaborative serving on the animal health working group. Additionally, he has remained active
with the UMN CVM by hosting students at his client’s farms while in practice, as a guest lecturer, and
more recently through collaboration in field research investigating the relationship between bedding
characteristics and udder health. He and his wife, also a veterinarian, reside near Ellsworth, WI with
their 3 children.
Director
Dr. Gary Goldstein
Dr. Gary Goldstein has been an MVMA member for over 36 years and he looks
forward to serving on the board and sharing his knowledge with the board. Over
the past seven months, we have worked tirelessly and collectively as a veterinary
community, to address the unprecedented challenge of COVID-19 and its impact
on how we practice veterinary medicine.
Dr. Goldstein graduated from the UMN College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984. In 1987 he became
a Charter Fellow in the Academy of Veterinary Dentistry and in 1992 he became Board Certified in
Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery.
Dr. Goldstein was Professor, section head of the Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery service for 13
years and associate medical director at the UMN VMC for five of those years. He was responsible
for medical operations, strategic planning and implementation of medical standards. He also
implemented leading edge didactic and clinical programs that fostered innovation, teamwork and
continuing education programs.
Dr. Goldstein works at Lakefield Veterinary Group. Six years ago he was hired as their Chief Medical
Officer. This past summer he joined the Mergers and Acquisitions team full time as the Executive
Vice President of Mergers and Acquisitions, working with fellow colleagues, to identify like-minded
veterinarians to join the Lakefield family and to help them make decisions for their next stages in their
careers.

Advanced Care Clinic Visit By Dan Tjornehoj
About ten years ago, Dr. Pamela Gerds looked to
build a veterinary clinic in Plymouth, Minnesota.
She wanted to move out of the Twin Cities and
decided that the Sartell/St. Cloud area would be
a wonderful location. As she and her husband,
Tom, were touring the area they came across
a new business development area located on
Scout Drive. With their dog also named Scout,
they began to think destiny was bringing them
to this location to build their new practice,
Advanced Care Pet Hospital. Now in 2020, they
have 10 staff including another veterinarian, Dr.
Michael Drey, with office hours every day of the
week.

WHAT’S NEW AT THE U?
NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE
November/December 2020
Re-vamped, Virtual Points of Pride Research Day Debuts
The College’s annual showcase of research was transformed into a virtual event for 2020, and it is
likely that several of the changes will “stick” for future years. The event celebrates faculty, fellows,
students and research partners who contribute to the advancement of biomedical sciences and
veterinary medicine. This year, CVM researchers competed in three key presentation mediums:
infographics, Three Minute Thesis®, and video abstracts. More than 60 submissions highlighting the
latest in veterinary research were evaluated.
Alumni From Underrepresented Groups Needed
The students at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine are looking for practicing
veterinarians who identify as members of underrepresented communities to serve as mentors. We
all know veterinary medicine education is challenging, and everyone can use a mentor who can
relate to their challenges. This is why students are looking for veterinarians of color and those from the
LGBTQ community who wish to help current veterinary students succeed. If you are interested, please
contact Kris Hayden at [email protected] and she will connect you with students. And thank you
for helping the next generation of veterinarians.
Study Looks at Allergic Dermatitis in Dogs
In cooperation with the University’s Medical School, the Minnesota Department of Health and the
Mayo Clinic, the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has begun testing human COVID
samples. The VDL’s assistance adds flexibility and extra capacity to the state’s testing strategy. Earlier
in the pandemic, the VDL and other College laboratories donated testing supplies and protective
equipment to the state’s testing effort.
New Study Hopes to Determine if Genetic Variants Can Help Predict
Equine Arrhythmias
Roughly half the healthy racing thoroughbreds experience cardiac arrhythmias when exercising.
Nineteen percent of horse deaths on the racetrack are considered sudden, but only 53 percent
of those sudden death cases receive a diagnosis. Since cardiac arrhythmias are untraceable in
deceased horses, Molly McCue, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM, and Sian Durward-Akhurst, BVMS, MS, PhD,
DACVIM, hypothesize that these arrhythmias are the underlying cause of death for many of these
horses with no visible cause of death.
With new funding from the Morris Animal Foundation, the researchers will investigate if genetic
variants can help identify horses at high risk of developing potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias. If
successful, the team will use this information to develop genetic tests, as well as other screening
protocols, for early identification of at-risk horses for the condition. These tests and screening protocols
would help veterinarians detect cardiac arrhythmias before they occur, saving many equine lives.
Advancements made in equine cardiac arrhythmias could also one day benefit human patient
outcomes.

Annual Meeting
February 4 - 6, 2021
Join us for our first
virtual convention!
Responding with Resilience:
Reflect Recover Reinvent
The 124th MVMA Annual Meeting goes virtual February 4-6, 2021! The goal of the MVMA Annual Meet-
ing has always been to deliver high-quality continuing education, provide access to vendors with the
latest and greatest in products and services, and the opportunity to network with other veterinary
professionals.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, MVMA staff and Executive Board members have been evaluating
how to best provide a meaningful experience while also maintaining a safe environment. This sum-
mer the MVMA surveyed 3800+ veterinary professionals including all MVMA members, all MN licensed
DVMs and past Annual Meeting participants regarding their comfort level in attending a large in-per-
son event. We heard you loud and clear and so to that end, it was determined that the 2021 MVMA
Annual Meeting should be held on a virtual platform.
To further help us in developing a successful event for you, we enlisted a small task force comprised
of past participants, speakers, and vendors. Additionally, staff had conversations with several other
veterinary organizations on their experiences in the development and delivering of large online con-
ventions.
We will be working with well-known technology vendors to provide you with a meaningful and
unique conference experience complete with live interactive CE sessions and on-demand non-inter-
active CE sessions, an interactive exhibit hall and the opportunity to connect with colleagues through
various networking experiences.
There are still details to be worked out, but rest assured, you can plan on a virtual Annual Meeting ex-
perience that provides the same value and quality you have come to expect from the MVMA. Yes, it
will be different, but there will be new opportunities as well.
Please go to www.mvma.org for more information or call the MVMA office (651-645-7533) for any
questions. Hope to see you there!

Veterinary Technician Certification Update
By Maria Nellessen, BA, CVT, VTS (Dentistry)
National Veterinary Technician Week (October 11-17) was a kickoff for an exciting event for certified
veterinary technicians. To celebrate CVT’s, MVMA offered a free 1 hr webinar CE event “Equine
Emergencies: Be Prepared” presented by Shana Lemmenes, CVT, VTS (EVN).
Certification renewal for 2020 has concluded for the year. We had a total of 1300 certification
renewals with 149 non-renewals. It is never too late to renew certification! Late fees for 2020 renewal
period are $40 and renewals must be mailed (online renewal has expired). In addition, a 5-credit
penalty is assessed and the 5 credits must be both medical and interactive.
If your CVT has not received their certification card by now, they are either pending or non-compliant
and need to either send in missing information or complete more CE. Recertifying in 2021? Look for
CVT renewal information being sent out in December 2020.
Don’t forget to check out our new “Verify a CVT” on our webpage! If your CVT is not listed, they are
either pending or non-compliant. Any questions can be directed via email to Maria at mariaN@

News from the Board of Veterinary Medicine
Open Public Board Member Position
The Board of Veterinary Medicine will have an opening as of January 1, 2021, for a public board
member engaged in either food animal or equine industries. “Public member” means a person
who is not, or never was, a member of the veterinary profession or the spouse of any such person,
or a person who does not have or has never had, a material financial interest in either the
providing of veterinary service or being licensed or regulated in a related profession, or an activity
directly related to veterinary medicine in MN Statute 214.02. To be considered, the applicant
must reside in Minnesota. Please encourage any persons ideally suited to this volunteer position
to apply via the Secretary of State’s website on or about the first week of November. https://
commissionsandappointments.sos.state.mn.us/Position/Index/1.
The opportunity to apply may remain open until the Governor appoints the new member. This
appointment is usually announced in June. Questions regarding this opportunity and responsibilities of
the position should be sent to [email protected].
Requirements for Prescriptions for Controlled Substances and Gabapentin
On October 1, 2020, the Board of Pharmacy announced a new requirement for veterinary
prescriptions for controlled substances and gabapentin that are sent to a pharmacy or to another
veterinary practice to be filled. The veterinarian that writes the prescription must put the owner’s
date of birth and gender on the prescription. This does not apply to medication a veterinarian
dispenses directly to the client. If the client’s gender is not apparent, there is an option to put a “U”
for unknown.
If a veterinarian’s license number is 4 digits or less, zero(s) must be placed in the front of the license
number to bring it up to 5 digits which are necessary for a pharmacy’s software and transmission to
the Board of Pharmacy’s Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP).
Please note this is not the MVMA launched VetPMP program.
Why was this requirement enacted? The purpose of the Board of Pharmacy’s new regulation is to
deter and detect a human’s illicit diversion of these medications prescribed for animals, i.e. doctor
shopping. When the information about the owner on the prescription is entered into the Board of
Pharmacy’s PMP, the entry can be seen by health professionals who are registered with the PMP
who will see that a prescription was filled for an “animal” belonging to this owner. This viewable
information also shows the name of the medication and the quantity. For example, a physician
who has or is going to write a tramadol prescription for the owner can check the PMP to see all
prescriptions for controlled substances and gabapentin issued to the owner and any animals in
the last 12 months. To the physician, the identity of the “animal” does not matter; the drug and
quantity does. In contrast, when a registered veterinarian checks the PMP before or after writing the
prescription, all prescriptions for ONLY the animal can be viewed by entering the owner’s name and
date of birth. The veterinarian will NOT see what has been prescribed for the human so there is no
violation of HIPAA regulations.
Any veterinarian with a DEA registration can enroll in the Board of Pharmacy’s PMP and enable other
veterinarians in that practice to enroll in the PMP as delegates under the DEA registrant. A trusted
non-veterinarian staff member can also be signed up as a delegate by the DEA registrant. The DEA
registrant can see all prescriptions that were filled under their DEA registration number. The delegates
can look up all controlled substances and gabapentin that were prescribed for any “animal” of that
owner.
Instructions for registration in the Board of Pharmacy’s PMP are available here:
https://minnesota.pmpaware.net/. There is link on this page to a tutorial on how to sign up.
Questions should be sent to PMP staff via email: [email protected].

QUICK TIP
How often should I have my hospital valued?
This is a common question we hear from practice owners a question with many
differing opinions. Some advisors suggest every 3-5 years. However, we recommend
having your hospital valued annually.
Why so often?
Your veterinary hospital is likely one of the largest, if not THE largest, investment in
your portfolio. I bet you are regularly watching the balances of your other investment
accounts (stocks, bonds, retirement accounts, etc.), right?
Then why wouldnʼt you also want to monitor the value of the investment you have in
your hospital? Not only can you monitor this investment but it is an investment
where you have a lot of control over the outcome!
When we value a hospital, we provide coaching on areas of opportunity for the owner
to improve the profitability and value over time. For example, here are the results
from one of our clients:
Valuation Date Earnings Profit % Value
