How COVID-19 Has Impacted Practices

Kevin Haroldson, DVM, Back Roads Vet Clinic
As a rural primarily large animal practitioner, I can honestly say that I have been busier than normal
since COVID-19 has become an issue. My large animal clients seem to be spending more time with
their animals. They have been getting their preventative vaccines done more frequently and are on
top of any sickness quicker. As for social distancing with large animal clientele, I’ve spent 45 years
on one end of the cow with the farmer on the other, so we have been practicing social distancing
without realizing it all these years.

As for the small animal part of my practice, it is primarily yearly vaccinations, flea and tick meds,
and worming. Since all my clients are rural locals, they do not want the yearly blood work required
by many in the small animal field. Since I only have at the most one client per half hour, there is no
crowd at my practice. As a result, I seem to have become a “destination” trip for those wanting to
get out of the house and have done more small animal vaccinations this year than normal. We are
isolated enough that social distancing is not an issue and those who feel at risk wear a mask and are
never in a crowded waiting room.

Chris Nord, DVM, Mille Lacs Veterinary Clinic
There has only been one confirmed case in the Mille Lacs county. We are very ready for things to get
back to “normal”. The restrictions have affected the small animal side of our business the most. We
had several people on voluntary lay-offs until we received a PPP loan (it was hard to get several to
come back to work, anxious). We started following AVMA/MVMA/CDC guidelines for our business
pretty much right away. We’ve had curbside service for several weeks now. We have plenty of
cloth masks, although I never wear one, but several of our staff do when interacting with clients. All
our lobbies are closed to clients. Technicians go out and get patients while wearing masks. Only
exception is for euthanasia, one family member can be with them as they go. We disinfect major
touch points through the day and at night when closing. All clients call in when they arrive. Take
most payments over phone or go out and take their money. Receptionists ask all clients if they have
been ill when making appointments. We really only have two “high-risk” employees; one is our office
manager who now works from home ~90% of time and the other receptionist we offered extended
leave to which she gladly accepted.

On the large animal side we have technicians hold animals for us whenever possible, but frankly
most cases on farms it’s pretty easy to social distance. We always wash hands and everyone has 70%
alcohol wipes with them for hands and surfaces in the field. Not a lot changed for us on the large
animal side except for a couple weeks early on when we postponed elective procedures because
of PPE conservation and until we knew we were “essential”. Still have been putting off geldings
because of PPE issues for now. We always have big haul-in Coggins/vaccine clinics to get bigger
groups of horses done at once. We’ve postponed those and made them smaller to limit numbers of
people in one area.

Biggest concern is the farm economy. The dairy, beef, and other animal markets are way down and
when those farmers quit or give up, they don’t come back. I think we are already seeing a down turn
in the calls for both routine care and even sick/emergencies (people just don’t want to spend the
money). It’s funny, on the cattle side I deal with coronavirus outbreaks all the time (different, but in
many ways it’s not).

I think the MVMA has done an excellent job supporting the veterinarians in our state and representing
us well at the capital through all this madness. Thank you!

6

Tom Rietveld, DVM, Headwaters Veterinary Center
Headwaters Veterinary Center in Bemidji is a single doctor practice with a staff of five. Our business
has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic similar to all the other clinics in the state. With our
rural county being less concentrated with much fewer COVID cases, we have tried to balance some
of the sweeping changes others are implementing by pausing and/or rearranging how we perform
our normal services, appointments and surgeries. We’ve gone to strict car side appointments,
which present both less and more efficient ways of doing business. Our technicians are spending
most of the time outside with our clients, and then as a single doctor, I will go out to speak with the
owners of our less-than-routine/sick cases. As we’ve moved farther away from the early stages of
the pandemic, our in-clinic traffic has increased only slightly. We manage the amount of clients in
our building to still abide by the social distancing that has been asked of us. As of now, we’ve only
had clients in the building for end-of-life issues or emergency cases. More clients are entering our
building within the past week, mainly for medication pick-up and payments at our front desk. We
are hoping to offer more in ‘normal’ appointments within the 2-3 weeks. Being a small staff with a
smaller building layout, we have chosen to not wear masks or gloves when we are only working with
each other. However, if a client falls into a higher risk category and needs to enter our business, we
will limit their risk by using more PPE. As with all of my colleagues, we do not know how this model of
practicing veterinary medicine will play out over the coming weeks and months, but our spring has
been extremely busy. We are grateful to still have weathered all of this by keeping everyone at full
time hours.

Dr. Lindsey Reddemann, Banfield Pet Hospital
At Banfield, we continue to prioritize the health, safety and wellbeing of our staff, clients and patients
amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Our hospitals are committed to delivering high-quality
veterinary care to pets that rely on us, and we’ve put a number of precautions in place to help
maintain a safe and healthy environment for our veterinary teams and everyone who comes to see
us.

This includes regularly reinforcing personal hygiene practices to prevent the spread of illness, hospital
cleaning and disinfection guidelines and responsible personal protective equipment usage. Our
hospital teams continue to offer flexible appointment options including curbside check-in and pet
drop-off. We’re also doing whatever we can to meet our clients’ needs from a distance, including
steps allowing clients to: complete drop-off forms and authorizations prior to arrival; provide
medical history over the phone; place their payment card-on-file for contactless checkout; and
use Banfield’s online pharmacy instead of purchasing recurring medications in-hospital. We also
continue to encourage our Optimum Wellness Plan clients to take advantage of our telehealth
service, Vet Chat™, which allows pet owners to connect with a veterinarian anytime, day or night
for general pet care advice and triage support from the comfort of their own homes. In addition to
physical precautions, Banfield has taken several steps to support associates’ health and emotional
wellbeing, including developing a COVID-19 pay policy, temporarily providing supplemental sick pay
and modifying our time-off policy for COVID-19-related circumstances. At Banfield, we realize that
we must prioritize supporting and empowering our associates who are on the front lines providing
essential care to pets in need. In the face of so much uncertainty, there is a strong desire in our
industry to come together in service of our clients, pets, and colleagues during this time of need.
As the COVID-19 pandemic evolves daily, we will continue to put associate and client safety and
wellbeing at the forefront, while continuing to provide essential care to the pets in our community.

Minnesota Great Get Together – Canceled in 2020

At a time when MVMA staff are usually ramping up the state fair volunteer solicitation we instead
want to THANK YOU for your past hours of volunteering and to let you know that the MVMA is busy
planning for the 2021 Minnesota State Fair.

Our Miracle of Birth Committee will meet again this week to continue planning for a safe and healthy
fair in 2021 for both fair goers and animals. The Surgery Suite committee has plans to repaint and work
on needed improvements on the exhibit for 2021 as well as continued work with the fair on the sound
quality of the outdoor location. Both exhibits give the profession a unique opportunity to educate the
public and we are excited for the future.

We are happy that the health of all fair goers and volunteers has driven the decision to cancel the
fair for 2020 and we want our volunteers to know that we look forward to giving them the opportunity
to serve next summer.

Thank you for your past service and stay well!

Two MVMA/MVMF Student Representatives for 2020-21

We are happy to announce that in 2020-21 we will have two MVMA/MVMF student representatives.
Second year student Cody Sorce and third year student Alexandria Armeni are going to co-rep the
MVMA/MVMF this coming school year. Please get to know them a little better below. Thank you
both for being our “boots on the ground” at the College of Veterinary Medicine.

Cody Sorce
Cody Sorce is a second year student at the University of Minnesota’s College
of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2023. He was born and raised in Santa Clarita,
California, just north of Los Angeles and attended a local community college
obtaining an associate degree in biological sciences. He transferred to
Arizona State University and majored in biological sciences with an emphasis
in evolutionary biology. Cody was a preschool teacher for 6 years before
transitioning careers to veterinary medicine. He was a veterinary technician
for approximately 3 years before coming to Minnesota. His career goals are
becoming an exotic animal specialist after obtaining his DVM at the U. Having
always had a passion for reptiles he plans on dedicating his career to the
underserved exotic animal community. In his spare time he likes to stay active and be outdoors or
in the gym. He owns a small business breeding pet snakes and spreading his passion to other reptile
keepers looking to get into the hobby and is looking forward to growing as a veterinarian this year as
the MVMA student representative for the University of Minnesota.

Alexandria Armeni

Alexandria Armeni is the one of the new MVMA/MVMF student representatives

for the 2020-2021 school year. Originally from Ohio, she is a graduate of The

Ohio State University with a

B.S with honors in Zoology.

Peter Breimhurst

University of Minnesota
College of Veterinary Medicine Class of 2022

• SAVMA Chapter President
• Christian Veterinary Fellowship Co-president
• Vice President - Poultry PAM Club
• Jumpstart Secretary
• CVM Student Ambassador Captain
• VetPAC Tutor
• Student Tech Support

I grew up in Eagan, MN. I showed livestock in 4H (rabbits, poultry, goats, and dairy), which helped
me develop my interests in veterinary medicine and science. I spent many summers at the state fair
showing livestock, hoping one day to be one of the vet students at the Miracle of Birth Center, which
I was last year! I went to the University of Minnesota for undergrad, earning a degree in Microbiology.

I am excited to be serving in the Army as a veterinarian immediately after graduation. I have interest
in both small and large animal medicine, along with public health and management, making the
Army a great fit. After the Army, I am interested in owning a mixed animal practice in northern
Minnesota or working in public health.

I enjoy being an active member of several student organizations on campus. In addition to SAVMA
Chapter President, I am the Co-president of Christian Veterinary Fellowship (CVF), vice-president of
poultry in the Production Animal Medicine (PAM) club and a student ambassador. I was previously
on the Jumpstart board, which helps first year students prepare for their first set of vet school tests. I
enjoy working with incoming students and sharing my experiences with them. I have enjoyed my first
few years of school and want to help them do the same.

I love playing any kind of sport! I often toss the football outside between classes and am usually on a
few intramural teams each semester. I also enjoy running races like the Ragnar relay with family and
friends. I also enjoy spending time outside, especially up north in the Boundary Waters or with family
at my grandparents’ cabin.

Congratulations 2020 Graduates!

QUICK TIP

How is COVID-19 Affecting the Market?

We are getting many calls with questions about COVID-19 and the impact it has on practice value,
sales, and acquisitions. So, I thought I would take a few moments to share some thoughts.

Practice Value:
Currently, we are valuing most hospitals as of 12/31/19. Of course, these valuations are not affected
by the COVID-19 situation, which presented itself in 2020. What will happen to practice values during
2020? It is simply too early to tell. If the effect on practice profit is short lived (a few months) it will
likely be thrown out as an anomaly. If the effect becomes long-term, the value will change in
accordance with the rise or decline of the hospital profit and the future risk of the cash flow stream.

For Buyers:
We continue to assist independent buyers in purchasing hospitals. I have some acquisitions that
were in process prior to COVID-19 and are moving forward without issue. In other instances, we are
running into situations where buyers arenʼt sure what they should pay for a hospital under the current
circumstances. There is just too much unknown risk at this point, which is a valid concern.

Financing:
Many of the lenders are on pause for two reasons.
• Their teams are completely consumed with processing PPP applications and they simply donʼt have the

resources to address new hospital acquisitions.
• The risk of revenue and profit generated from hospitals is an unknown. They are challenged internally

with what risks they are willing and able to tolerate and what they can lend on.

Sellers:
In my experience, the corporate purchasers are still making strong offers and want to buy hospitals. It
is business as usual for them. I also have seen a surge in inquiries from independent buyers. So, if you
want to sell, give us a call!

What is the future risk? Well, that is the magic question!
We need more time to answer this accurately.

If you have additional questions or concerns about how COVID-19 might be affecting the value
of your practice or a potential sale or acquisition, give us a call! Weʼd be happy to talk with you!
