Congratulations from the Chancellor

RONNIE D. GREEN, Ph.D. Congratulations to the Class of May 2021. When you all first
became Huskers, none of us would have anticipated these would
be the circumstances under which we would be celebrating your
accomplishment. You should be enormously proud of what you have
achieved.

Our university community is made up of students, faculty, staff, alumni
and friends who know what it means to be determined and resilient
in the face of obstacles. We strive toward our goals by adapting and
innovating. We reach out for help when we need it and support one
another when we see someone who could use a helping hand. That is
what we mean by “In Our Grit, Our Glory.” I could not be more proud of
what you and all of our graduating students have accomplished during
this unprecedented time of COVID-19. You have earned all the glory that
comes with it!

Commencement is a truly special time. As the first in my family to earn
a college degree, I cherished my commencement ceremonies. I am
overjoyed that we are once again able to conduct in-person ceremonies
and continue our time-honored tradition of presenting your actual
diploma on stage. It’s been an unforgettable past 15 months, and I hope
the memories you take from this ceremony last forever, too.

You are part of a historical graduating class. You’ll always hold a special
place in the heart of this great land-grant university and for me as your
chancellor. We believe in you and all you can do with your Nebraska
degree!

Ronnie D. Green became the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s 20th chancellor
on May 8, 2016. Green received bachelors and masters degrees in animal science
from Virginia Tech and Colorado State University, respectively. His doctoral
program was completed jointly at the University of Nebraska and the USDA-ARS
U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in animal breeding and genetics in 1988.

Chancellor Green is married to UNL alumna Jane Green and they are the proud
parents of four children, all graduates of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.

Undergraduate Commencement Speaker

TOM OSBORNE, Ph.D. A native of Hastings, where he earned his bachelor’s degree at Hastings
College, Tom Osborne enjoyed a brief playing career in the National
Football League before receiving his master’s and doctoral degrees in
educational psychology at Nebraska, while serving as an assistant coach
under head football coach Bob Devaney. Osborne was named Devaney’s
successor in 1973 and over the next 25 years established himself as one
of the best coaches in college football history. He guided Nebraska to
13 conference titles and three national championships, and he helped
Nebraska claim the most Academic All-Americans in the nation. He was
elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

After retiring from coaching, Osborne turned his attention to teaching
graduate courses at Nebraska. In 2000, he was elected to represent
Nebraska’s 3rd District in Congress, where he served three terms. In
2007, Osborne returned to the university to serve as athletic director,
leading Nebraska Athletics into the Big Ten Conference one year before
retiring in 2012.

Osborne has devoted countless hours during his career toward a unique
mentoring program. The TeamMates program, founded by Tom and his
wife Nancy in 1991, today provides support and encouragement to more
than 10,000 school-aged youth in five states, with the goal of seeing
them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education.
