What’s New at the U? MOVE (Minnesota Opportunities for Veterinary Engagement) was
Classifieds created at the end of 2018 as a small MVMA taskforce with big ideas.
The main objective of the group was to create opportunities for
VISIT MVMA.ORG veterinarians to engage with their colleagues and state association in
fun, social, and educational ways.

In 2019, the MOVE taskforce was able to kick-off their social
engagements with a Brewing4Success event. This brewery event was
a great way for early-career professionals to network and discuss
important topics like mental health and work-life balance. The more
these events progressed, the more the MOVE taskforce realized there
was a need in the veterinary community for fun social events that have
serious conversational undertones, like personal finances, student debt,
and mental health.

NEW WAYS TO ENGAGE CONTINUED...

The group was able to organize a series of successful events throughout
2019 and into early 2020. But as with most events of 2020, mid-March
brought upon the cancellation of foreseeable MOVE events.
Not wanting to lose momentum, the MOVE taskforce had to pivot their
plans for 2020 and find creative ways to continue to engage the veterinary
community. Previous events included breweries, a Twins game, Can
Can Wonderland, the Science Museum, and escape rooms. The MOVE
taskforce ultimately landed on the ideas of socially distance pet painting
and a #MOVetforward clinic baskets as options to engage members.
MOVE teamed up with Grey Duck Art and has hosted three successful
Paint Your Pet events. These events allow 10 veterinarians to connect with
their peers, paint their furry friends, and enjoy a bit of (masked) normalcy.
These events did not have any set conversational topics, but many
veterinarians found it helpful to discuss how different clinics are handling the pandemic. MOVE
hopes to calendar more of these events soon.

6

There are about 20 #MOVetforward Baskets in circulation
and making their way through clinics across the metro.
#MOVetForward Baskets are a way for clinics to receive and
give at no cost of their own. These baskets were put together
and passed around to lift spirits and connect clinics during this
challenging time. These #MOVetForward Gift Baskets are paid for
by MOVE and generous sponsors.

Have an idea on how the MOVE can engage the veterinary
community? Send your great ideas to info@mvma.org.

2020 Certification for Veterinary Technicians

We are still processing renewals for 2020; however, the deadline is coming up soon for certification
renewals. Please note, the deadline for submissions will be September 30th, 2020 (normally June 30th,
but extended due to COVID-19). After the deadline, there will be a $40 late fee and five penalty
credits incurred. Once a submission is processed, the technician will receive a verification letter and
certification card in the mail. These are considered “proof” of certification. If a technician does not
receive a verification letter or certification card, it can mean that they are no longer certified in the
state of Minnesota and he/she should not be using the CVT credentials. Currently, we are finding
many non-credentialed veterinary technicians using the CVT credentials on clinic websites. Please
make sure to update this information.

If your veterinary technician has any questions about becoming certified, or their current certification
has lapsed, don’t hesitate to contact Maria at mariaN@mvma.org.

Are You Interested in MVMA’s Power
THE POWER OF TEN of Ten Leadership Program?

The Power of Ten Leadership (POTL) Program is designed to cultivate leadership capacity in
recent graduates and provide learning experiences that will enrich the individual and benefit the
individual’s practice, community, and profession.

of veterinary medicine with a DVM degree within the last ten years) with leadership development
sessions over an eight-month period. MVMA provides topic experts, that not only convey the key
learning points about leadership, but also deepen the understanding of class members on a number
of related topics. The sessions will be face-to-face or virtual meetings in the Twin Cities (usually 6-9
pm). Sample topics/sessions include:

•Media Relations (includes social media) •Financial Advice, student debt management

Participation creates a sense of community and participants build lasting bonds with class members.
The first class in 2021 will be held in March or April, and conclude before the MVMA Annual Meeting
in February 2022. A MVMA POTL graduate member chairs each session. Please contact the MVMA
(dant@mvma.org) or call 651-645-7533 to find out more or to register for 2021 sessions. There is no

WHAT’S NEW AT THE U?

NEWS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA COLLEGE OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

September/October 2020

Students Arrive Amidst Pandemic Uncertainty

From a hybrid teaching model to uncertainty about the
potential resurgence of COVID-19, incoming veterinary students
will be living through unusual times. Maintaining student safety
while delivering the very best education experience are the
College’s top priorities. Students will be in consistent groups
(“platoons” or “pods”) for all laboratories within their class.
All lecture and small group work will be completed virtually.
The College’s faculty and instructional technologists are using
their experience from spring semester and student feedback to best meet student needs for virtual
learning.

Fourth-year students have been receiving more hands-on instruction throughout COVID, compared
to many other schools, supplemented by virtual instruction. They are returning to clinics in a staged
manner, following the gradual sunrise of our facilities and operations.

“At present, we have no reason to believe our students will not be able to continue their education
as planned and to stay on track for graduation to join the profession as day-one competent
veterinarians,” says Peggy Root-Kustritz, DVM, PhD, DACT, MMedEd, Associate Dean of Education.

Minnesota Sees Strong Fall 2020 Veterinary Enrollments

While other colleges are seeing smaller enrollments this fall, the University of Minnesota College of
Veterinary Medicine is meeting or exceeding its admissions targets. The College is welcoming 105
students for its DVM program. Our incoming DVM Class of 2024 is composed of 91 self-identified
females and 14 self-identified males. Of these, 86 describe themselves as white; 11 as Asian; 4 as
Hispanic; 2 as American Indian, and 2 did not specify. Five VetFAST candidates and one VetLEAD
participant join the class of 2024.

The College’s graduate programs are welcoming nine students over the course of the academic
year. Three are enrolled in the Comparative and Molecular Biosciences program and six are in the
Veterinary Medicine program. The new arrivals include two international students. More than 85
students are currently enrolled in the College’s graduate programs.

Admissions closed earlier this summer for the DVM Master’s of Public Health program, which is jointly
offered with the University’s School of Public Health. Twenty-nine new students joined the program
from seven different veterinary schools. Program leaders are anticipating similar strong interest as the
DVM-MPH program shifts to a rolling admissions cycle next spring.

MN Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory begins COVID-19 testing

In cooperation with the University’s Medical School, the Minnesota Department of Health and the
Mayo Clinic, the Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has begun testing human COVID
samples. The VDL’s assistance adds flexibility and extra capacity to the state’s testing strategy. Earlier
in the pandemic, the VDL and other College laboratories donated testing supplies and protective
equipment to the state’s testing effort.

Research Productivity UPCOMING EVENTS
Continues to Grow
Points of Pride Research Day, October 21.
In FY20, the College’s researchers submitted 223

new award requests totaling $86,822,773 costs.

Of these, 47 were awarded totaling $8,509,450 in new research dollars for the College--a funding

success rate of 21%. These figures represent a significant increase over FY18 and FY19, suggesting

strong growth in the College’s research enterprise. Researchers published over 250 manuscripts in

FY20 across a range of peer reviewed scientific publications.

New Leaders Named for Veterinary Medical Center

The College has named Michael Henson, DVM, PhD, Diplomate ACVIM, interim co-Director (left)
of the small animal hospital and Scott Madill, DVcs, DACT, interim co-Director (middle) of the large
animal hospital. Their appointments follow the departure of David Lee earlier this summer for a

position at Cornell University.
Dr. Lee’s departure also
created an opening on
the MVMA’s board. Ned
Patterson, DVM, PhD (right),
will fulfill the remainder of
Lee’s term. Patterson
specializes in small animal
genetics and seizure
disorders.

MN Purebred Dog Breeders Association Membership Directory Goes Digital

Minnesota Purebred Dog Breeders Association is a non-profit organization that benefits the welfare
and well-being of purebred dogs and breeders, owners and potential buyers within the State of
Minnesota and surrounding areas. This year their Purebred Dog Breeder membership directory will be
available only online at https://www.minnesotapurebreddogs.org/breeders.html.

Commercial Breeder of Excellence Program

The Minnesota Commercial Breeder bill became law on July 1, 2014 when the Board of Animal
Health (BAH) began registering commercial dog and cat breeders who fell within the law. Within one
year, the Board started to conduct annual inspections of existing breeder facilities along with any
new breeders that set up facilities covered under the law. The Board licensed those breeders who
were in compliance with existing animal welfare laws and the additional provisions included in the
new law.

In 2020 the Minnesota Board of Animal Health introduced the Commercial Breeder Excellence
Program. There are 119 licensed commercial dog
or cat breeders in Minnesota, and each may
earn up to five different badges as voluntary
participants in the Breeder Excellence Program.
Each badge represents an area where a breeder
has exceeded legal standards and if they earn
all five, they are recognized as a Breeder of
Excellence.

The five badges of the program are:
•Behavior and Socialization.
•Continuing Education.
•Facility Management.
•Health Screening.
•Disease Screening (earned as one or the other,
based on species):

• Canine Brucellosis Screening (dogs).
• Feline Immunodeficiency and Feline

Leukemia Screening (cats).

The new Commercial Breeder of Excellence
Program was created to highlight licensed dog
and cat breeders that go above and beyond.

Health’s Commercial Breeder of Excellence
Program online at https://www.bah.state.mn.us/

QUICK TIP

Is Now a Good Time to Buy or Sell a Veterinary Hospital?

There has been a lot of caution in the marketplace as we work our way through the COVID crisis.
At least once a week, I receive a call from either a buyer or a seller asking about the current market
conditions. Here is what I am experiencing…

Independent Buyers
I have recently closed a sale for a 1 doctor practice and I have another sale set to close in the next 30
days on a 1 ½ doctor practice, both being purchased by independent veterinarian buyers. These
buyers have not had any issues obtaining financing as a result of COVID.

Corporate Buyers
I recently closed a corporate transaction where the buyer had an offer signed mid-March, right as the
COVID shutdowns happened. This corporate buyer moved through the sale just as they would have
without the COVID situation. I am in the middle of negotiations on several other sales to corporate
buyers and the offers are as strong, if not stronger, as they had been pre-COVID.

Hospital Operations
In my experience, our clients are coming through the COVID situation extremely well in terms of
revenue and profit. When comparing the June 2020 year-to-date results against 2019, nearly all of
our clients are exceeding their 2019 numbers. In fact, most of the comments Iʼm hearing from our
clients include, “we are too busy” and “we are having to turn away clients on a daily basis.” One
client said they are turning away 12-17 people per day! Our industry appears to be booming!

So, to answer the leading question, yes! Now is an excellent time to purchase or sell a
veterinary hospital.
• Prices from corporate buyers are as strong as ever
• We continue to obtain multiple corporate offers for many of our clients
• Independent purchaser activity is very good
• Financing is available for independent buyers
• Revenue growth in hospitals is excellent
• Veterinary business ownership has a bright future

Is this you? Are you waiting to sell because of the uncertainties around COVID? Are you a buyer
waiting to purchase for the same reasons? Well, donʼt wait any longer! Give us a call, we can offer
the guidance you need to successfully maneuver through what is likely the most important financial
transaction of your life.
