Opening Remarks President Wendy Wintersteen Professor Suresh served as Director of the US National Science
Foundation (NSF), a position to which he was nominated by the
Conferring of the Honorary Degree, President Wendy Wintersteen President of the United States, and unanimously confirmed by the US
Doctor of Science Senate (2010-2013). He has been the President of Carnegie Mellon
University (2013 – 2017); Dean of Engineering (2007-2010) and
Recipient Subra Suresh Vannevar Bush Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology
(MIT); and Professor of Engineering at Brown University (1983-
Commencement Address Subra Suresh 1993). He graduated from high school at the age of 15 and received his
engineering doctorate degree from MIT in two years. He received his master’s degree from Iowa
President and Distinguished University Professor State in 1979.
Professor Suresh’s research has focused on the properties of engineered and biological
at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore materials and their implications for human diseases and technologies across a broad spectrum
of industries and applications. He has authored three books, more than 300 research articles and

She also volunteered for the engineering career fair and Iowa Science Bowl.
Joyce has also written technical publications and presented at research symposiums.
Following graduation, Joyce plans to enter a doctoral program in electrical
engineering.
