ABOUT NGEE ANN POLYTECHNIC

Set up in 1963 by the Ngee Ann Kongsi as Ngee Ann College with only 116 students,
Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) has come a long way from its humble beginnings to
establish itself as one of the leading institutions of higher learning in Singapore.
Its vision is to prepare graduates with a passion for learning, values for life and
competencies to thrive in a global workplace.

Today, the polytechnic offers 49 full-time courses through the following academic
schools:

• School of Business & Accountancy
• School of Design & Environment

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Graduate,

My heartiest congratulations to you on
graduating from Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

I hope that you have enjoyed your time
here and have been enriched by the many
experiences that NP has provided. Whether
it was interesting internships and projects,
classmates and friends who cheered you on,
lecturers and industry mentors who guided
you, or overseas trips that provided new
perspectives, many people have collectively
contributed to your growth and fond memories
that will last a lifetime.

Thanks to SkillsFuture, you have more exciting
options before you upon graduation. Whether
you choose to work, to pursue further studies,
or work-and-study, I believe that we have
done our best to prepare you well, by instilling
a passion for learning in you and equipping you to be global-smart professionals.
It’s also our desire for you to be big-hearted, and to positively impact society with
your skills and knowledge.

While chasing your dreams, don’t neglect your loved ones too. A story is told of a
man who spent his years building up his career, at the expense of family time. One
day, he finally got promoted to the highest position in the company. He rushed
home to share the good news with his family. But upon reaching home, he found
the house empty. His children had all grown up and stayed out on their own, and
his wife had also gotten on with her own career. There was no one to share his
success. So let’s make sure there’s someone we can share our success with in life,
meaningfully.

I look forward to hearing exciting news about you in the years to come, and I wish
you a very bright future and fulfilling life.

Live well and stay healthy.

Academic excellence – check. Student leadership – check. Character development
– check. Armed with all the distinguished marks of a model student, all-rounder
Bryan Lim remains unassuming and eager to learn.

The Business Studies (BS) graduate credits his internship with a medical organisation
for making him realise he had a lot more to learn.

“The stint humbled me a lot. I was reporting to a few superiors, each with different
management styles. The experience taught me what true leadership is about. There
is still some way to go for me to apply the knowledge that I’ve gained from school,”
he said.

Besides the internship experience, Bryan recalls other ‘Aha’ moments over the past
three years, some of which have changed his calling.

He was all set to become a future entrepreneur when he chose to pursue Business
Studies in Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). While he has no regrets about his choice,
his aspirations have taken a totally new direction because of a navy exhibition he
attended in 2014.

“I became fascinated by defence diplomacy and how international disputes were
resolved. My interest in law and its application in the military field was ignited,” said
Bryan. He added that his Overseas Merit Fellowship programme in New Zealand
fuelled his interest further: “It broadened my worldview and made me want to give
back to Singapore.”

Bryan now plans to do law and ultimately serve in Singapore’s defence force. He
has received offers to study law, including from the prestigious King’s College
London. Meanwhile, he has embarked on an internship with a law firm to gain some
experience and prepare himself for his law degree.

The change in career inclination was not the only U-turn he made. He was not sure
about poly education initially. But he changed his mind soon after experiencing life
at NP. “I believe everything happens for a reason. I feel blessed to have been given so
many opportunities in NP that I might not have gotten elsewhere,” he said.

Bryan has had a very fulfilling student life indeed. He was Captain of the Swim
Team, Vice President of the Red Cross Youth Chapter, a Ngee Ann Ambassador, and
a volunteer with the Rotaract and Leo Club. Outside of NP, he was also a certified
Rescue Diver and a regular helper at community events.

To survive the hectic schedule and still do well academically, Bryan has his
competitive swimming to thank for teaching him discipline and resilience. He sums
it up with this mantra: “Tough times won’t last, but tough people do.”

The Ngee Ann Kongsi Gold Medal is awarded each year to the most outstanding
graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The recipient is selected from the top
graduates of the various Academic Schools. The medal, first presented in 1980, is
funded by Ngee Ann Kongsi, a foundation that is actively involved in educational,
cultural and welfare activities in Singapore.

The Lien Ying Chow Gold Medal is awarded to the most outstanding graduate from
a non-technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. First awarded in 1998, it is
funded through the generous contribution of the late Dr Lien Ying Chow, Chairman
of the Lien Foundation. Dr Lien was the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the
then Ngee Ann College from 1962 to 1965.

Biomedical Science (BMS) graduate Julia Tan knew early on that she would want to
pursue a career in healthcare, thanks to her fascination with the human body and
blood in particular.

“Blood tells us a lot about a person’s health, and there’s no replacement for it. That’s
why I’m passionate about it,” said Julia, a regular blood donor who topped all three
Haematology modules in her course.

Even her final-year research project involved blood. She had to draw blood to study
platelet reactivity, spending countless hours to determine research protocols and
running experiments over and over again to get reliable results. All this helped build
up her resilience.

Julia cherishes her two-year internship at National University Hospital, offered under
her diploma’s Clinical Laboratory Technology specialisation. The stint gave her the
opportunity to conduct diagnostic laboratory tests as well as interact with patients.

It was this interaction with patients that ignited her interest in Medicine. “Even when
I knew the diagnosis, I could not tell patients and relieve their anxiety – it was not
my job! That’s why I want to become a doctor,” said Julia, adding that she is grateful
to her lecturers who arranged for her to shadow doctors and other healthcare
professionals. This gave her a 360-degree view of working in a hospital.

Continuing her passion in healthcare outside of her course, Julia was active in the
Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) Red Cross Youth Chapter of which she was President
in her final year. She also serves in a Residents’ Committee and has helped to run
several community activities.

A highlight of her NP journey was her Overseas Merit Award trip to Perth where she
met Professor Barry Marshall who had discovered that stomach ulcers were caused
by bacteria. The Nobel Laureate inspired her with his gung-ho, always-curious and
never-give-up attitude towards research.

Another eye-opening trip was to Laos. “I was shocked that people in the village I
visited had to travel as much as four hours to get medical care in the city,” said Julia
who wants to work with humanitarian medical aid teams in future.

For this to happen, she hopes to be able to study medicine, with a long-term goal
to become a haematology consultant.

The Lee Kuan Yew Award was first presented in 1992. It is awarded to the most
outstanding graduate from a technology course in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The
award is funded by the late Mr Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first Prime Minister. Mr Lee
had donated the honorarium that he had received from various overseas speaking
engagements and from the funds raised from a special edition of his memoirs.

The Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding Achievement Award is a premier award for
all-round excellence. It is presented to a select group of five to 10 top graduates
from each graduating batch of more than 5,000 students. The award was presented
for the first time in 2010. This year, five Ngee Ann Polytechnic Outstanding
Achievement Awards will be given.

Mervin Tan Yen Leong has always been an aircraft enthusiast, with a strong passion
for military history and aviation, spending hours watching documentaries in this
genre. He dreamt of becoming a pilot.

However, while doing his diploma in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Aerospace Electronics,
he became enthralled with the technical aspects of an aircraft. He now dreams of a
career as an engineer in the exciting aerospace sector where he hopes to contribute
to make a name for Singapore on the international stage.

Mervin’s final-year project enabled him to integrate and apply the knowledge he
had gained over three years. His team built a flying car, which was entered for a
competition in Korea. “The competition was cancelled because of the MERS
outbreak, but the sense of achievement we got from making our machine work was
immense,” said Mervin.

A highlight of his poly life was going to Copenhagen Business School in Denmark for
three weeks, on the Overseas Merit Fellowship award. The experience exposed him
to a plethora of concepts and ideas. “I was bowled over by how the university used
history to teach business concepts. Ironically, I also learnt more about Singapore
and its policies while I was there, such as why a welfare system might not work for
us,” he said.

An avid dancer since the age of 9, Mervin put his talent to good use in NP’s BBoys
Club for breakdancers. Starting of as an instructor, he became its Vice President in
his final year, charting its direction from being a recreational club to a competitive
one.

Coming from a single parent family, Mervin cites his beautician mother as his role
model, saying: “She single-handedly raised my sister and me. I really appreciate
what she’s done for us and the sacrifices she’s made.”

Speaking of sacrifices, he recalled another trip to Laos as part of NP’s The Christiera
Programme, to build a school and conduct English classes. “It was crazy hard work
mixing cement by hand under the hot sun. But I pressed on as it meant building
something meaningful for the kids,” he shared.

Mervin aims to build a career in the military as an aerospace engineer in future as this
will allow him to marry his patriotism with his love for aviation.

From a young age, Vhora Shrayans Suresh would dismantle items that his parents
had discarded – like an electric standing fan, calculator and blender – to see how
they functioned. It was this curiosity plus the innovative spirit of US business tycoon
Howard Hughes, portrayed in the movie, The Aviator, which propelled Shrayans to
take up a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP).

His three years at NP have been nothing short of an enriching and memorable
journey. “I love studying how machines are made. I’m also fascinated about applying
the laws of physics to produce something useful,” he said. “At NP, I found the joy of
learning as well as teaching my peers who needed help. I’ve also had lecturers who
constantly encouraged me. All this inspires me to want to come back to NP in future
to be a lecturer.”

Wanting to experience poly life to the fullest, Shrayans kept a hectic schedule. He
took up squash in his first year and joined the School of Engineering Rangers, going
on to become its President in his final year. However, his leadership stint was initially
fraught with challenges.

“I was a Master Sergeant in National Cadet Corp in secondary school. So I used the
same top-down style with my EXCO members in the Rangers and infuriated them,
big time. Thanks to my seniors’ mentorship and my own daily reflections, I slowly
become a more consultative leader,” he recalled. This willingness to learn and grow,
even outside of his course, earned Shrayans strong bonds with his EXCO members.

Besides the close-knit relationships he gained at NP, Shrayans is thankful for his
final-year project. It involved setting up a solar panel system to power an office for
the Waterways Watch Society (WWS).

“Initially, my team and I struggled with this project – we felt it was neither
revolutionary nor complex,” said Shrayans, who enjoys being put in situations that
make him think out-of-the-box. “But when we saw the fruit of our labour six months
later, we felt a strong sense of achievement. The solar-powered office has become
part of WWS’ efforts to create an eco water park. It showcases how clean energy can
be harnessed to meet daily needs,” he concluded.

After furthering his studies in Mechanical Engineering, Shrayans aims to gain industry
experience before returning to NP to teach.

Network Systems & Security’s (NSS) Silver Medallist graduate Wong Kee Hui has
come a long way to turn what was at one time a stumbling block into his lifelong
passion.

At the age of 10, Kee Hui’s dad bought him a second-hand computer which planted
the seed of love for computers in him. He especially enjoyed playing games on
it. However, his love became an indulgence, which took a toll on his studies in
secondary school.

After Secondary Four, Kee Hui got a wake-up call when he was posted to the Institute
of Technical Education (ITE). Determined to put his interest in computers to good
use, he enrolled into the Nitec course in Info-Communications Technology. He was
introduced to network systems and soon realized his potential in that field. His good
results at ITE eventually earned him a place in Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s (NP) NSS
diploma course where he continued to shine. The rest is history.

TAY ENG SOON GOLD MEDAL

The computer whiz also made good use of his IT skills to support himself through
his poly education. While studying, he took up a part-time job to install security
software. He was so good at it that his boss even asked him to develop software for
some customers.

Recounting his fulfilling three years at NP, Kee Hui cites his six-month internship with
a software development company as a key highlight. “It was challenging as I had to
work on a variety of projects. One demanding task was to develop a programme to
enable the client to easily retrieve data from various computer systems and present
it as a dashboard. It was not something I had done before so I had to do a lot of
self-learning. In the end, I managed to deliver it and we had a happy client,’ he said.

Letting on that his source of inspiration comes from Apple co-founder and visionary,
Steve Jobs, Kee Hui has set his sights on a career as an IT security specialist. To
achieve this, he is not adamant about getting a degree though he has already secured
a spot in Nanyang Technological University to read Computer Science. He is also
considering working in the field while taking up certification courses along the way
to become a qualified specialist. After all, the late Jobs did not have a degree.

The Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal is awarded each year to the most outstanding
graduate formerly from an Institute of Technical Education. The Gold Medal was first
awarded in 1994. It is funded by the Tay Eng Soon Scholarship Fund set up in honour
and memory of the late Senior Minister of State for Education, Dr Tay Eng Soon.

Born with a urinary tract blockage that required him to go for two operations before
the age of three, Chia Kun Liang was discouraged from participating in sports-
related activities as a young child. That changed when he was in Primary Two.

“I wanted to do as much as my friends during PE lessons. I remember my teacher
encouraging me by giving me a head start in a race. It was embarrassing to come
in last but I finished the race,” recalled Kun Liang who has since drawn on his
experience to encourage parents of atypical children not to be fearful about letting
their kids participate in various activities.

Clear about the path he wanted to take, Kun Liang sought out Ngee Ann
Polytechnics’s (NP) Child Psychology and Early Education course as his first choice.
In his final year, he opted for the Early Literacy track, which led to him developing
Project Five Fingers. The project, involving puppets to teach socio-emotional skills
to children, was a valuable learning experience.

“I love puppetry and had used it in NP’s YAY (Young Advocating for the Younger)
Club to perform for cancer-stricken children. Project Five Fingers showed me that
I could make a bigger impact. I now aspire to design creative teaching and learning
resources for broadcast media so that I can reach out to more children, parents and
teachers,” said Kun Liang whose source of inspiration is Sesame Street.

To this end, he will be taking up a Nanyang Technological University scholarship to
do Communication Studies and believes that having been a student journalist with
Lianhe Zaobao since Secondary Two will give him a head start.

A Youth Expedition Project in Philippines that saw him teaching personal hygiene
to children below eight years of age, gave him a different exposure. “As we were
dealing with children who could not speak English, we had to do step-by-step
demonstrations using more exaggerated movements and constantly check that
we were being understood. The experience further affirmed my interest in early
childhood education,” he said.

Besides serving as President in YAY Club, Kun Liang has also been active in his
constituency. He helps out in the Unique Children’s Recreation Club, started by a
group of parents in Bukit Panjang to provide an inclusive environment via social and
emotional learning programmes for both typical and atypical children.

An internship at the prestigious Imperial College London was the most memorable
part of Shiek Abdullah Abdul Arshath’s education at Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP). It
changed his life, to some extent.

“I hardly had to cook or wash my own clothes before, as my homemaker mom
took care of all of these things. Living out on my own for the first time taught me
many life skills, including how to use the washing machine!” quipped the Chemical
& Biomolecular Engineering graduate, who now helps out with housework at home.

Having to live in a totally new environment for about five months, Arshath had to
get out of his comfort zone and meet new friends. He also got to be very disciplined
as he had to plan his own schedule to run experiments while catching up on his
reading and chores. But it was all worth it.

Not only did he get to assist a renowned professor to conduct research on using
plant cellulose to yield biofuel, he also met many researchers, became friends with
PhD students from around the world, and attended lectures at the Imperial College.
Arshath was gratified that the professor was happy with his work, and that he did not
let NP and his lecturers down for giving him such a wonderful learning opportunity.

It is not difficult to understand why Arshath did not take every learning experience
for granted. Coming from a humble background, he had to juggle his time giving
tuition while studying, to lighten the financial burden on his family.

Despite this, the big-hearted student made the effort to help others less fortunate.
He was active in BP-NP Mentoring Club, tutoring primary schoolers from low income
families. As a member of the School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology’s
Community Service Interest Group, he also volunteered as a befriender to dialysis
patients at National Kidney Foundation.

Arshath now wants to give back by conducting motivational talks and sharing his
learning experience with his juniors.

Keen to be a researcher in future, Arshath plans to further his studies in the field of
chemical engineering. He has already been offered a place at several universities
including Imperial College London and Kings College London.
