Winona Cargile Alexander Award Qualification

According to our Policy and Procedures, the Winona Cargile Alexander
Award recognizes a soror for demonstrating outstanding service and
dedication to the ideals set forth by our Founders, members who exemplify
sisterhood, compassion, and fortitude in their dedication and support of
Miami Alumnae projects and programs, and have 10 years uninterrupted
years of financial membership and service that has moved Miami Alumnae
forward. I have demonstrated all these things and because of that I am very
humbled and honored to have been nominated for this award.

My love for Delta started thirty years ago at Austin Peay State University,
where I was given the opportunity to write for the Iota Upsilon chapter
January 1990 and later initiated April 22, 1990. The date of the 22nd has
always been special to me, because it reminded me of the Founders and now this award.

I have been an active member with Miami Alumnae for over 10 years. I have demonstrated qualifications for
this award by providing outstanding service and dedication to the ideals set forth by our Founders as a
committed and dedicated committee member and chairperson (see committee list below). In an effort to
exemplify sisterhood, compassion, and fortitude to Miami Alumnae projects and programs, I started the
Sisterhood Fellowship Monthly program. This program allows sorors to show sisterhood, compassion, and
fortitude. This program has given the sorors the opportunity to bond with other sorors and allowed the sorors
to show compassion, as we have had sorors share some of their most intimate fears and emotions.

In an effort to move Miami Alumnae forward, I forged a relationship with Humana, where the chapter
partnered with Humana to build a playground and garden for a shelter relief center. This partnership lead to
Humana being sponsors for the 2014 Southern Regional Conference, Cooking Gents, and Cluster November
2019.

• Cluster Chair – My leadership during this event allowed Miami Alumnae to shine and be pushed forward to host future
events, such as future Clusters, Empowerment Meetings, and Regional Conferences. Yes, we have already been asked to
submit an RFP for a future Regional Conference.

• Partnership with 100 Black Men of South Florida – this partnership has allowed us to show the compassion the chapter
have for community service and demonstrates our mission to serve by supporting kids in need.

• Delta Academy - Shark Tagging with the Gil society. This was a committee effort that truly expanded the science
component of Delta Academy.

Since joining Miami Alumnae, I have worked on various committees, chaired committees, served as Second
Vice President, and currently serves as the First Vice President. Some of the committees include the following.

• Chair of Florida and the Bahamas Cluster (November 2019)
• First Vice President (2018 – Present)
• Second Vice President (2014 – 2018)
• Delta Academy Chair (2010 – 2014)
• Chairperson Scholarship & Awards (2014 – 2018)
• Chairperson Membership Services (2018 – present)

• Delta Academy Committee Member (2008 – present)
• Technology Committee Member (2016 – present)
• 10th, 11th, and 12th Grade Debutante Committee Member (2010 – 2019)

How have you exhibited the characteristics of the Nine Cardinal Virtues and used your leadership to impact
the chapter (500 words or less)? (Required)

The Nine Cardinal Virtues are actually the reasons I remain dedicated to Miami Alumnae, but more
importantly to Delta Sigma Theta. All nine are things that my mom instilled in me from a child. Is it
easy to display all of them all the time in a chapter with over 300 women, no, but it is the virtue of
COMPASSION that makes it just a little bit easier? The virtue of compassion helps me to help Delta
Dears outside of chapter meetings. It allows me to have an open heart so that I am truly able to see all
sides of a situation and as a leader this is very important. I have exhibited DEDICATION, by being a
committed member of our organization for 30 years. In the last 10 years and since joining MAC, I have
been committee chair for several committees and served diligently on the executive board. I have
exhibited FELLOWSHIP by establishing the Sisterhood Monthly Fellowship event. This program allows
sorors to show sisterhood, compassion, and fortitude. This program has given the sorors the
opportunity to bond with other sorors and allowed the sorors to show compassion. We have had
sorors share some of their most intimate fears and emotions during these events.
I have used my leadership to impact the chapter by leading a successful Delta Academy committee
during 2010 through 2014, as the chair. During my time as chair, I produced a newsletter that was
submitted to the parents and chapter that shared the monthly activities completed by the young ladies
(see attached). The Sisterhood Fellowship events, established under my term of First Vice President
has impacted the chapter. The fellowship events have allowed sorors to bond with other sorors. We
have been able to come up with some new and exciting ideas for committees and the chapter during
some of these events which have been attended by all ages. Additionally, several sorors have come to
me and praised the Buddy System, as a way to keep in touch with other sorors. One soror stated,
“Thanks for assigning my Buddy, she was there for me during a very difficult time”. The biggest
example of my leadership impacting the chapter was my role as the Cluster chair (November 2019).
My leadership made sure that Miami Alumnae did not have any negative financial impact before,
during, and after the conclusion of Cluster. With my leadership, we exceeded all goals (i.e. registration,
sponsorship, vendor, ads, etc.). The Cluster yield a satisfaction rating of over 85%.
I am truly an involved leader. I execute every task with certainty, assurance, connect ability,
transparency, willingness, and with compassion. I have proven that I can be trusted to complete tasks
and multiple plans faithfully with great follow through and strategic operational procedures and
assignments.
