Bodega Bay

IF YOU CAN SEE WHAT I CAN SEE…
You Might Be Riding On The Back of a Harley

1st Wedding Anniversary Ride to Bodega Bay

There is a love story about a biker and a beauty queen. Anniversary Lunch at The Tides
He rode a Harley and wore black leather. She drove
a black corvette and wore diamonds and rhinestones.
He lived in So Cal, she lived in Nor Cal. She was Committee
Chairperson for the High School Reunion, where they both
went to high school. The biker and beauty queen did not know
each other when they were teens. Reaching out to alumni,
she contacted him. He said, “Why would I want to see people
I haven’t seen in 40 years? No thank you.” She says she was
persuasive, he says she was pushy. Whatever, she laughs.
He bought 4 tickets, himself and his 3 siblings. Somehow,
they became friends. Communicating through messages,
text, and eventually phone calls. Almost a year later, a month
before the reunion, he decided to fly up and meet her in
person. They met and fell in love. Almost 5 years later, Curt
and Cyndee were married on Cinco de Mayo, May 5, 2018.

This year was their first anniversary. He wanted to take a
ride to the coast and stay the weekend, maybe in Ft. Bragg.
She reminded him they had been invited to a special party
being hosted by her BFF. She knew if they did not attend,
her girlfriend would be sad. Because he is so kind to his
wife, he understood and gave in. The wife got an idea and
asked her husband if they could ride the next day to Bodega
Bay and celebrate their anniversary. Wanting to go to the
coast for their anniversary, he was happy to say yes, and
together they invited some friends to join them on the First
Anniversary Ride.

If you head east on I-80 and punch it,
in just under 8 hours you’ll find yourself
in Wendover. It’s a little town on the
border of Nevada and Utah. A few
cheap hotels and a large casino is your
choice for some rest before the 19 mile
drive to the salt. The Bonneville Salt
Flats are 30,000 acre expanse of hard,
white salt crust on the edge of the Great
Salt Lake Basin in Utah. The flats are
about 12 miles long and 5 miles wide
with a total of over 46 square miles.
Near the center of the salt, the crust is
almost 5‘ thick in places, the Bonneville
Salt Flats are 90% common salt. Every
summer, professional and amateur
teams from around the world compete
for land speed records in different
classes. Racetracks are surveyed and
prepared with heavy drag sleds.

The formation of the Salt Flats began at the end of the last Ice Age, when the waters
of ancient Lake Bonneville began to recede. Lake Bonneville covered approximately
2/3 of Utah and was almost 1000 feet deep in the area of the Salt Flats. When this
large amount of fresh water slowly disappeared over time, large concentrations of
dissolved minerals were deposited.

we were getting hungry, we stopped for breakfast. The “In

Timber Museum Up 101 to SR113 and then on to SR112 East. Although
a real pretty woodsy ride, we were a little disappointed. If
you look at a map, it appears 112 runs right along the coast.
It does, but except for a few places, the forest blocks out
most of the coastline. Before reaching Port Angeles, we ran
across the Blackbird Café. It must be the meeting place
of the two wheeled folks along this route. Pulling up, there
must have been 20 bicycles and 7 or 8 motorcycles gathered
there. If we would have had more time (and our passports),
when reaching Port Angeles, we would have taken the ferry
across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. It would have been nice to
have a relaxing lunch in Victoria. Oh well, maybe next time.

So, instead of Victoria, we made our way to Hurricane Ridge
Road. Wow! Now this was some kind of ride. This route
through the Olympic Mountain Range is spectacular. It was a
real treat getting to the visitor center at the top and hanging out
on the patio. We soaked in a horizon of mountain peaks that
melded down into deep forested valleys. It was very hard to
leave. But the show must go on. Going down the mountain was
just as nice as going up. This time, we decided to take 101 all
the way back, skipping SR112. A good choice. Especially the
long section along Lake Crescent. Really pretty. We went on
back through Forks, this time making a quick stop at the Forks
Timber Museum. Lots of old logging artifacts such as hand
saws, chain saws, axes and other wood cutting equipment.
There are also replicas of a cookhouse, a bunkhouse, a tavern,
and even an old outhouse! Certainly, worth a look.

Sea Stacks at Ruby Beach There was one more stop in order before we made our
way back to the family and that was Ruby Beach. Of the

road make for a sweet ride. If you recall, Mount St. Helens
erupted in May of 1980. It was the most disastrous volcanic
eruption in U.S. history. The column shot 80,000 feet in the
air and spread ash over 11 states and bordering Canada. The
volcanic mudslides reached the Columbia River, 50 miles to
the southwest. Fifty-seven people were killed, and hundreds
of square miles were utterly devasted. At a couple of the
viewpoints, you can look down into the valley and see the route
that the slide took. Over the last, almost forty years, it has grown
in little bit, but it is still mostly barren terrain. Even some of the
nearby lakes are still partly covered with felled trees. Also, The
Johnston Ridge Observatory is named after David Johnston, a
Volcanologist (studies volcanoes) who perished in the eruption.

Tips for the best experience: The main reason I wanted to

Words can’t truly describe the feeling, but there was a moment while
BLOG provided by
riding into the park for the first time at sunset when I realized how much I
www.RussBrown.com
had been missing by thinking Death Valley was lesser of a National Park

than all the others. Everything under, around and above me was red, pink

and orange. It both looked and felt like the whole world was on fire. For a

few minutes, I felt like a phoenix, born from ashes and flame, rolling through

the twisted canyon on the east end of the park. As the sky darkened, my

eyes were fully opened to the immense beauty and wonder of Death Valley.

Lesson learned: never ever judge a book by its title.

Admittedly, yes, the heat is a problem for a motorcyclist visiting in late June.

Day and night, it felt like I was riding through an oven with no promise of relief

in sight. The “death” part of Death Valley is a real thing. What was I thinking?

I asked myself that question a few times during my 24-hour visit. However,

I wasn’t asking that question because I was miserable. I was asking myself

that question because I couldn’t stop and pull over to take pictures whenever

I wanted – neither my body nor my camera equipment would have obliged.

I wanted to take photos of everything (literally everything) in the park

because every mile was both gorgeous and different than the last. Canyons,

mountains, basins, sand dunes, flatlands, craters, an oasis (or was it a

mirage?), etc… You name it, I saw it. All I could do was ride around in the

114° swelter with my mouth open in awe. I had to keep moving, there was

no stopping to gawk. Thank goodness I brought a hydration pack (more on

how I survived the heat in an upcoming story-insert link to “how I survived

Death Valley story” here).

On the West end of the park, the elevation rises and offers a small but

welcome temperature drop. With that elevation change comes sprawling

dramatic views of the valley below along immaculately paved curves; every

rider’s dream. The ride south from Stovepipe Wells to Father Crowley Overlook

on CA190 was so breathtaking that the rest of the world faded away for 30

minutes. I managed to regain my composure and pull over for a few quick

photos just West of Panamint Springs. As I was struggling to wrap my head

around what I had just experienced, I decided at that moment I needed to

return and spend an entire week in the park repeating that same journey.
