I t is Independence month and one of my favorite months of the year. The month is all about FREEDOM. Freedom from the tyranny and oppression from a country that was putting a strong hold on the American beliefs and the American way that was forming. Fourth of July is the day we celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and the most significant statement is published that reads; “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” At the end of the Declaration it reads, “And for the support of this Declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes, and our Sacred Honor.” In 2017, I had just returned from New York which included a visit to the 9/11 Memorial, so I want to dedicate this article to the men and women who gave their life to help and save the lives of thousands of Americans. To hold true to what we so strongly believe in and hold in high regard; Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. There is no other country on the planet that comes back ever so strong when tyranny hits our shores. The 9/11 Memorial, although solemn, is a very powerful statement of the American Spirit and that no foe will ever cripple or break us, but only make us stronger. Stephen P. Driscoll (NYPD) a military brother, father, husband, and son that I served in the Navy with lost his life while trying to free the victims in the South Tower. He is honored at the Memorial, and when I found his name and his picture, every emotion ran through my soul; anger, loss, sadness, revenge, love, and pride. As a Christian, I sometimes ask myself why I continue to pursue those that are still lost, those that are still struggling, and those that are being tormented by the tyranny of the enemy. An enemy that is trying to lead them astray, break apart their families, destroy their marriages, end their friendships with arrogance and lies. Then, I reflect on why my friend Stephen ran into those towers to save the people, knowing full well that he may never get a chance to see his wife or 14-yearold son again. He ran into a burning building that was about to collapse to try and save “Just One More”. He pledged his life, his fortune, and made a Sacred Honoring vow to defeat tyranny and save the principle of freedom regardless of color, creed, or ethnic heritage. He did it because they were Americans! I do it because I am a Christian, and I too am against tyranny, hatred and the principalities of evil. I do it because I made a Sacred Vow to help when I can, serve when I can, and lead as many as I can to Freedom. There is One who came to save and give us life, and one who came to kill, steal and destroy. I am for FREEDOM! I am for PEACE! I am for JOY! The 316 Highway On Ramp Hey, this is Steve, the 3:16 for Bikers guy. I ride a HOG and I love all motorcycles. If you love bikes, then this is for you. Some numbers instantly mean something to a biker. 883, 1200, 74, Milwaukee 8. There’s a bunch more. If you started riding when I did, the numbers associated with riding would include 305, 450, 500, 650, and 750. You undoubtedly know the numbers 3,1,6, 3:16, and know it comes from John 3:16 in the Bible. You’ve seen it behind home plate at a baseball game, or behind the goal posts when extra points are attempted. Not only there, but you might even see a Highway 316 if you’re riding in Georgia, Connecticut, Wyoming, New York, or even Thailand! Each of these locations have a 316 Highway! I want to bring you along with me on a unique Highway 316, to have several short looks at the 3:16s found in each New Testament book of the Bible. RIDE DESTINATION: eureka Monolith Off Mattole Josh Me His Harley A couple of months ago we were really disappointed that our annual ride to Shelter Cove ride was torpedoed by the horrendous weather that we all experienced. So, we decided to head up in that direction again, only a little farther north to Eureka. It would also give us an opportunity to hook up with Cindy’s nephew, Josh, who we hadn’t seen in a while. We took our normal route to this part of the state, Granzella’s for breakfast, lunch at Boomer’s or the Peg House, with maybe a butt break or two in between. Like my trip down to Carmel Valley earlier, the hills were beautifully green with large patches of those yellow and orange wildflowers. This wonderful scenery sure makes it easy on the eyes. As we made our way up to 101, we both had a hankering for some oysters when we made it to the Peg House. To our dismay, they were out of oysters!?! Just ruined our whole trip! OK, OK, it wasn’t THAT bad. Ha! On the plus side, they did have some “good old boys” on stage, entertaining us all with some fine country rock. A little later in the day we motored on into Eureka. Our home for the next few days would be the Best Western Humboldt Bay Inn (www.humboldtbayinn.com). Almost all Best Westerns are nice, but this particular one is exceptional. It is right downtown, indoor pool, huge spa, a restaurant next door, and even free limousine service available in the evenings. After settling in, we thought we would check out a few of the local landmarks. The nice thing about being in the Old Town area is that almost everything is within walking distance. So, after a quick stop at Starbucks, we meandered over to Picky Picky Picky. If you’re looking for work, or outdoor gear - it’s hard to beat this place. It started out in 1981 as a small Army Surplus store and has since expanded to three large specialty stores. Not far from Picky Picky Picky is the Carson Mansion. It’s probably the premier example of Victorian architecture in America. It was built for William Carson, a local lumber baron in 1884. The 16,000 square foot home was purchased by business leaders in 1950 and is now a private club. Another Victorian mansion is right across the street. Mr. Carson built the Pink Lady, now known as the Pinc, for his son Milton and Milton’s wife, Amelia in 1889. You can actually stay at the Pinc, as it is an upscale B & B. By the way, the new owners changed the “K” to “C” to honor and bring awareness to cancer survivors. We finished our day off with a nice meal at Kristina’s next door. CONTINUED…. After our complimentary breakfast the next morning, we cruised over to Arcata and hung out around the Plaza for a bit. Josh used to be the head chef at the Plaza Grill (www.plazagrillarcata. com) probably the best place to eat in Arcata. Back in Eureka, another great place to hang out is the Lost Coast Brewery (www.lostcoast. com) You’ll find a great atmosphere, some fine food, and, of course, a large selection of beers. A couple of the favorites are the Great White (a citrus Belgian) and Downtown Brown (a light hopped dark malt ale.) Play your cards right and you might find our nephew bartending in his spare time. After a relaxing day and some spa time, we walked over to the AA Bar and Grill for dinner (www.aabarandgrill.net) Want a good steak? You’ll find it here! Also, a unique and well stocked horseshoe bar. Nice! The following day, Cindy’s neck was a bit touchy, so I took the opportunity to do the Mattole Road thing. So, I shot down to Ferndale and hopped on Mattole Road. There are several sections of bumpy, uneven asphalt and also dirt areas (road repair) This route is not really for the inexperienced rider. That being said, it’s challenging, it’s scenic, it’s fun! You start with a climb (where most of the problems are), roll Carson Mansion Ocean View Mattole Rd Mattole Rd Pinc Lady Lost Coast Brewery through the valley, then drop down to the coast. Petrolia and Honeydew will be waiting for you and then another climb. The last section is a fine scenic cruise through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. That’s where I met up with US 101 again and made my way back to Eureka. That evening , we took advantage of Humboldt Bay Inn’s limo service with Selina Chauff Eur (a high school classmate of one of TRM Norcal’s editors) to Josh’s restaurant, Five Eleven Bar & Grill. He’s been running this fine dining establishment for seven years or so now, and he is well known by the AA Bar and Grill BW Humboldt Bay Inn Limo Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 9


locals in town. If you’re looking for a special night out, definitely make your way over to Five Eleven. (www.fiveeleveneureka. com) We can’t wait for a return visit. Did we mention he’s also a rider? Well, it was time to head home the next day, but we made time to pay a visit to the historic Samoa Cook House (www. samoacookhouse.net). The cookhouse was originally the dining facility for the local Vance Lumber Company. Constructed in 1893, meals were served on large communal tables and still are today. There is a real nice museum inside also. A trip up there wouldn’t have been complete without hitting at least a section or two of the Avenue of Giants. Mission complete! One last thought. We decided to try and enjoy those great BBQ oysters again at the Peg House on our way home, but we got there about an hour too early. Poop munch! If You Can See What I Can See … You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley Bike Night 2023 I f you build it, they will come. We have all heard that before. It is easy to consider doing something like hosting a Bike Night event and hope people will come. We all want to believe if we have the courage to take the first step then everything else will just fall in place. It really doesn’t work that way. The reality is some will come. Will they stay? Will they have fun? Will they come back again? If you strive for success you quickly find out it takes much more work than just talking about an idea. Summer is here, the evenings are warm and daylight lasts into the night. Ready to kick off summer, Harley-Davidson of Rocklin decided to host a Bike Night Event. Trying to beat the hot days of summer, there was not much time for planning. Things had to happen quickly. I am one of the founders and a leader of Sierra Thunder Harley Owners Group, the HOG chapter sponsored by HD Rocklin. The dealer reached out asking me for help. First thing we had to do was determine who would be available to work the event and then select a date. Just like that, Bike Night went on the calendar. Staff was scheduled and Sierra Thunder H.O.G. members volunteered. Impromptu with only a month to plan and summer vacations happening in between, we knew our time for advertising was limited. A flyer was created, and immediately blasted on social media. Now we had to do the event planning. Some of our questions: Food trucks or BBQ? Entertainment, is there time to find a good band? Show and Shine, Best Bike, People’s Choice and raffle giveaways, what will be the prizes? Vendors, who? We came up with a list, adding and taking away ideas as we checked items off. Reaching out to those we hoped could participate; we found more than a few schedule conflicts. We understood, but still needed to make this happen. We regrouped our ideas and decided to do this without bringing in outside help. The dealership has a large barbecue and meat smoker. A shopping list was prepared. The dealer went grocery shopping. Sierra Thunder members volunteered to cook and serve the food. Someone figured out how to connect the building sound system to speakers outside the building. A working microphone was located; a playlist was prepared and paired to the system. We had music! Special areas of the parking lot must be closed to show bikes and give people access to see them. Best Bike awards were considered. People’s Choice was turned down only because it would require bike check in and managing votes. To make Dealers Choice fair, the winner would need more than one person’s vote. The Dealer, Matt Guidera, and the HOG Director, Curt Van Hooser, agreed to look at all the bikes, compare their choices and select the winner. The 1st Place trophy was ordered. To accomplish two goals at once, collecting contact info and giving away free raffle prizes, a ticket would be given to Bike Night Good times Rob & Tammi with Cyndee Raffle Winner Scott Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12


every person who signed up. Money in the form of a gift card redeemable at the dealership is an appreciated raffle prize. Six gift cards were loaded with a value of $25 each. Another great giveaway is a 50/50 drawing. Only $1 per ticket, 50% of overall funds collected will go to the lucky ticket holder. The other 50% to the HOG Chapter Christmas fund, in appreciation for their volunteers. The day of the event arrived, staff and volunteers set up early. Good thing because bikes were rolling in before 5 p.m. There was a lot of excitement as friends greeted friends, meandering about listening to bikes revving, powerful motors and great sound systems playing loud music. The smell from the barbecue wafted through the air. Food and drinks were free. The dealership was open and many went inside to look at bikes, talk to service, parts and the sales staff. Others enjoyed shopping for Harley clothing and accessories. Dealer discounts were offered, there was a sale happening. Matt Guidera was carrying the raffle gift cards in his pocket. He appreciated the sound systems on a few bikes. He liked them so much that he handed out a gift card to one bike owner and awarded him with best sound system. Matt continued to walk around, secretly scoping out his choice for best bike on site, giving away more gift cards to different bike owners for optional categories. He had to go back into the dealership to obtain replacement cards for the raffle giveaway. Earlier, I reached out to my pageant sisters seeking a volunteer. Ms. California said she would be pleased to appear at our event and help. She managed the sign in table, greeting everyone while handing out the free tickets for the gift card drawings. I spent the evening meeting and greeting as many people as I could take a moment to talk to, introducing myself and thanking them for coming. Then I would go back to the microphone and do one of my favorite things, emcee the event. The lucky 50/50 ticket holder won $220. Not bad for one dollar and a night of fun. It was time for the announcement of Best Bike. Matt announced the trophy went to Chicano Jake for his old school low rider with an awesome paint job. Sometimes the simplest of plans will succeed. We counted approximately 250 bikes and 400 people at this event. If you attended, we thank you for coming out and having fun. If you missed it, we will do Bike Night again. I don’t know when it started. Perhaps the seed was planted after watching the movie Tombstone years ago. There’s always been something I’ve enjoyed about the history of the wild west. My friend and neighbor Allen who I will refer to as ABC (always be cool) henceforth, as there are two Allen/Alan’s in our group. ABC and I have been tossing the idea around about riding to Tombstone Arizona over the last couple of years. As the discussions went on, the plan evolved in its refinement.  Well the time for talking was over. We needed action. Upon discussing our plan with our wives to ride to Tombstone - they gave us their blessing. Boys trip!  We mentioned it to our members in our Riding Group TATTERED RIDERS. Much to our delight, three other members - Migs, Rob, and Alan decided to join us on our trek. They had never been on a real long road trip like this before and wanted to experience it for themselves.  I told them that things happen and plans get altered and that we will make the changes needed while on the fly.  Well, that’s what happened. We decided to leave on Sunday morning in April. We were to meet at Sky River Casino in Elk Grove. Everyone was excited and confidence was high, our goal was to get to Kingman, Arizona. That first day would not be uneventful though as the check engine light went on in ABC’s 2019 Road King about a half hour short of Bakersfield.  Upon filling up with gas in Bakersfield, the bike would not start so Rob and Migs went to find a battery - because we couldn’t get it to jump, even after we called AAA. Upon replacing the battery, it started and seemed to be running fine although the check engine light still came on. Well we had places to go and things to see, so we continued on and made it to Kingman well after dark. We settled in for a late dinner, went back to the hotel room, had a couple drinks and crashed. It had been a long first day. The next day we had decided to take Route 66 from Kingman to Seligman and onto Flagstaff. Now Route 66 was part of the plan all along. I urge everybody that has the opportunity to ride that stretch of road between Kingman and Seligman to just do it. Stop in the Route 66 museum in Kingman.  Lots of cool stuff.  I’m pretty sure we all bought a Route 66 patch which I will proudly wear. There’s some really interesting stops along the way with old cars, gas pumps, stores, and a vibe of nostalgia, of yesteryear, and how things used to be. There certainly was something special about that period of time in American history. During this ride on Route 66, we encountered 55 mile an hour crosswinds. The multitudes of smallish tumbleweeds were blowing across the road embedding themselves in our bikes!  It was definitely a challenge, dodging some of the bigger ones. It was no easy feat, but we managed to arrive at the Roadkill Cafe in Seligman. We had some lunch and great service along with great conversation. The later part of the day we would continue on to Flagstaff to spend our second night. ROAD TRIPPIN’ Tombstone, Arizona         Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 14


CONTINUED ...                        Now I don’t really know what I was thinking when I did my share of planning for this ride. As it turned out, it was another one of the challenges that we had to face. I didn’t realize just how cold Flagstaff is in early April and I didn’t take into consideration the elevation of 7000 feet! Needless to say, it snowed. We enjoyed it that night though while watching the NCAA championship at the local tavern across the street from the hotel. After some libations, Rob and Migs decided to make snow angels back at the hotel - it was hilarious! We assumed that when we got up in the morning, the snow would melt.  Wrong!  It finally got up to about 31° by noon and by that time we felt it was safe enough to try and make it down the hill to Scottsdale where we would bring ABC’s bike in to have it checked out at their massive dealership. We still had a long way to go and we all wanted to arrive and depart according to schedule. Our goal for that day was to have made it all the way to Tombstone. But as it turned out, ABC’s bike had some issues that needed to be addressed immediately and we decided to call it a day in Scottsdale. Turned out to be a good decision as we had a nice room, found a good pizza and beer joint and had an fun apres’ party. We figured we would just make the best of the evening and head out to Tombstone first thing in the morning which we did. This allowed us plenty of time to check into the Tombstone Grand Hotel and head in to the old west town infamous for “The Gunfight at the OK Corral”.  We would not be disappointed. We were all hungry, but decided we would postpone eating until after we saw the reenactment of the shootout. It was very similar to the movie; although, they provided a little bit more context, background, and history to the whole event along with a little comedic relief in the process. It was very entertaining. We walked the streets of Tombstone visiting the various shops, and picking up some memorabilia. It felt like we were the Earp brothers. Wyatt, Virgil, Morgan and Doc Holiday with a little bit of Johnny Ringo thrown in for good measure walking those streets. Thanks to Migs, who had surprised us with having a picture taken of the five of us, dressed up like the cowboys/lawmen of that era. Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 15


We stopped in and visited The Birdcage Saloon and took the tour. This was the theater where the cowboys would get drunk and rowdy and they had shot some holes in the ceiling during the show. The movie did justice to the place. The bullet holes remain.  We continued on to Big Nose Kates Saloon which was a jumping joint. The bartender was quite the hoot who gave us some little know facts about the town and its history. The servers were pretty and engaging. The whiskey was smooth. It was starting to get dark now so we headed back to the hotel which was only a half mile out of town. We lit the large fire pit outside, drank some more good whiskey and fired up the stogies.  It was a really great day!   We left early for Las Vegas and took Highway 93 North.  It was one helluva ride!  Me, on my Road Glide, Alan on his souped up Fat Boy, ABC on his Road King, and Migs and Rob on their fast Indians. Fantastic scenery on a road where you can really get on it….and we most certainly did!  We reached Hoover Dam, found a nice scenic overlook of the dam and the Lake. Quite spectacular!  Thanks to ABC, who has a pretty intricate knowledge of Las Vegas - got us through the traffic and back roads leading us to the Linq Hotel where we would stay the next two nights.  He had set up a couple of events for us while there. Dinner at an Italian Restaurant called Batistas - great food and vibe!  Afterwards we headed over to Caesar’s Palace and hung out for a while. We were tired and hit the sack sometime after midnight. Up to this point it had been a lot of riding and the new day would be no exception.  Rob had planned a ride about 45 minutes out of Vegas to a place called The Valley of Fire. Saw some beautiful sandstone rock formations with some terrific roads.  The way the sunlight hit the rocks in the valley was surreal. It was very mystical and the land seemed sacred. Hopefully it remains unspoiled by man. It would have been magical to be there at sunrise or sunset. Upon returning to the hotel we were pressed for time to start the evening’s shenanigans which ABC had set up. We took an Uber to Area 15, which is a bar with a freaky “Burning Man” style of art and neon lighting throughout. Shops and zip lines and weird stuff. Really unique. We then walked over to a whiskey tasting event called Lost Souls in Area 15. Super fun. Four whiskey stops in indoor maze like rooms. The goal was to find the right room to get your next taste.  Each room had some great entertainment albeit different in every room.  I highly recommend this place on your next visit.  It was GOOD FUN!   We were headed home the next day.   Vegas back to Sactown the next day was uneventful.  Long and boring now that the fun and anticipation of the trip was over. But it gave us the opportunity to reflect upon how our bonds had grown, and the fun experiences that we had shared. They will never be forgotten and will be talked about endlessly as we are all sitting in our rocking chairs still drinking good whiskey and smoking fine cigars.   Every morning during our road trip, the five of us would gather in a circle hold each others hands and Alan would say a prayer to The Lord keep us safe on our journey. Alan is kind of our unofficial chaplain, so a special thank you to him for providing that fellowship. It was greatly appreciated. As we pulled off at our last gas stop and we all acknowledged not only our love and respect for each other, but how we all hung together as brothers in the wind, the tumbleweeds, the snow, the bike trouble, and the cold, and how everyone stepped up when needed. We had all become closer and knew each other on a more deeply connected level than ever before. All totaled, we rode 2,357 miles together. I’m proud to call these men not only my friends but my brothers in the wind. This is what riding is about to me. RIDE PRIDE J ust like all builds coming out of Binford’s Customs in Manteca, this one started as an idea rolling around in owner Paul Binford’s ever moving brain. This time around he was looking to build something in the sport touring world, but with that ‘true to form’ Binford look...you know, ALOT of eyeball! Something that would appeal to young and seasoned riders alike, and that even those hateful haters couldn’t keep their eyes off of; and with that, the crew at BCC was off to the races. CONTINUED ... This bike was purchased brand spankin’ new, and then immediately stripped down to its bare bones. Paint colors and schemes were chosen, as well as an overall theme to the bike. Many of the parts were hand crafted, and as they like to do at Binford’s. No expense was spared in the big rowdy 124” motor, with parts from the best in the biz, including Woods Performance, Rick Ward, and Dark Horse. And of course, you can’t miss the beautiful fully polished cases that set the bar in the custom industry. Another stand out feature is the custom built, also fully polished monster of an exhaust...they will NEVER not hear you coming! Binford’s master tech, Tanner Shackley was at the helm as usual putting his touch and applying keen sense of perfection to every aspect of the build, from not only every nut and bolt, but hand fabricating many of the parts. Of course, it wouldn’t truly be a Binford bike if Paul didn’t knuckle it up with his bad ass 3 spoke, 23” front knuckle wheel, accompanied by the matching 18”x6” rear with PM radial brakes throughout.


Underneath the 150 hours of beautiful paint are a handcrafted tank, bags, and side covers, which were all done in-house. Another feature on this bike is the expertly and perfectly matched powder coating done by James at Applied Coatings, who the Binford crew has considered a major asset for many years. When all was said and done, this shop had not only a work of art, but a powerhouse machine ready to rip down the highways and byways of the Golden State. Binford’s Custom is currently creeping up on 25 years in the motorcycle industry, and with his wild designs and attention to detail. He is forever pushing his crew to that next level of creativity, and of course - function and speed! When asked about the photo shoot for this build, Paul said don’t mind the flip offs... gotta give the haters something to complain about! Fornis got together when singer/ songwriter Don Fornis met keyboardist KeyDragon at an elementary school where they both worked and started playing in an Elvis cover band with a teacher there. They quickly formed a good working relationship and realized they needed to get going on an original rock n’ roll project. With the help from old friend Rolo, they moved on to making this vision a reality, creating Fornis . With catchy, twangy, bouncy tunes that are lilted with glam rock and marbled with Jerry Lee Lewis style rock n’ roll, “power punk” is the way they prefer to describe their sound in 2022 coining the eponymous hashtag during the pandemic for the release of single “Don’t Mean Mug Me”. On February 4, 2023 Fornis released their latest EP “Tickled By Flies” and is now booking shows around Auburn, Sacramento, Reno, and beyond. June 9-11 (Leggett) Rocking The Giants held their annual run in the scenic Redwoods. Three glorious days of bands from all over Northern California showing up to jam the entire weekend. Big spreads of food, food and more food everywhere.! Bikers from all over came to enjoy the three day event hosted by Frank Ulrich, who made sure that everyone had a plate of food. Everything from chicken to ribs, and all the fixin’s in between. Mike Canovas of the Duet “Those Guys” coordinated the band line-up…and what a line-up it was! Those Guys with Mike and Chris Rovetti, David Verno of The Jackson Stone Band, Solo artist Emily Lace, Severance, Joey Calander, Scott Forbes Band, Johnny’s Blues Band, Cowboy Jackson, Black Horse Blues Band and Jody Counter Band. A biker walks into a restaurant followed by an ostrich. The waitress asks him if he was ready to order? Biker says, “A cheeseburger, fries and a coke,” and turns to the ostrich, “What’ll you have?” “I’ll have the exact same,” says the ostrich. The waitress returns with their order. “My shift is over so have to collect now if that’s alright with you? It’s a total of $19.40 please,” and the man reaches into his pocket and pulls out the exact money and change for the payment. The next day the man and the ostrich come in and the biker says, “cheeseburger, fries and a coke, and the ostrich says, “I’ll have the exact same thing please.” The following day, same thing said and ordered and the biker reaches into his jeans and pulls out the exact money and change. Friday, the following day, the biker and ostrich enter and the biker says, “this is Friday night, so I’ll have the porterhouse steak, loaded baked potato and house salad with bleu cheese dressing.” The waitress looks at the ostrich who says, “I’ll have the exact same, please.” The waitress brings the bill and it’s $47.62, the man reaches in his pocket and pulls out the exact money and change, again. The waitress has been dying to ask so she does. “Sir, pardon me, but how do you always come up with the ex - act money and change out of your pocket every single time?” “Well, explains the biker, “several years ago I was cleaning an attic as a side gig and found an old lamp. When I rubbed it a Genie appeared and said I had two wishes, but to be exact and wise in my wishes. My first wish was that for anything I ever had to pay for in my life, I’d put my hand in my pocket and the correct amount of money and change would always be there.” “That is brilliant!” says the waitress...”most would wish for a million dollars, but you’ll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!” Genius! “Yup”, says the biker, ‘whether it’s a gallon of milk or icecream or my brand new Cadillac, the exact money is always right there.” The waitress is stunned but then asks, “But sir, what’s with the ostrich?” The biker sighs, looks down and replies, “My second wish was for a tall chick with long legs who agrees with everything I say.” ------------------------------------------------------------ Kinda’ funny how the colors red, white and blue represent Freedom ...... Blog by Olivia Goheen for Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys Kevin Baas, aka Teach, is an inspiring shop teacher who teaches chopper-building classes in Minnesota. He encourages hands-on learning and risk-taking in his classroom. Baas’ course has gained popularity among students and in the community. In our interview, Kevin discusses the incredible story about Jason Momoa gifting him the first Panhead he built two decades ago. Kevin plans to rebuild the 1957 motorcycle and give it to his son, Gavin, when he turns 19. Kevin remains focused on teaching valuable in-shop and outof-shop skills to his students. He sees his classes as a way to inspire young men and women to pursue their passions with motorcycles. Kevin will go down in history as a teacher who genuinely cares about others’ success and who relentlessly exudes positivity and good values. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: You’re a teacher by day, a metal fabricator by night, a bike builder and entrepreneur. You’re doing a lot of stuff. So, how’s it going, Kevin? Kevin Baas: We always say, there’s not enough hours in the day. There’s so much going on. Time flies when you’re having fun and we have a lot of cool projects. Since the last time we talked, it’s been a long time, but I still love teaching — still doing what I do, going to work every day and just enjoying it and helping kids find their passion. I’m teaching them neat stuff that they can do with their hands and showing them they can be successful. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Let’s talk a bit about how you got into motorcycles and where your love came from. Also, tell me a little bit about how you got into metal fabrication. Kevin Baas: All that stemmed right back to my family. My father was a sheet metal worker. My Mom and Dad had a passion for Harley’s. They rode, my mom still rides and my dad still rides. When I was in highschool, shop [class] was my favorite class of the day. I didn’t really look forward to sit in the class where I had to hear a lecture all hour. I wanted to be working with my hands and building stuff and doing stuff. At home on my family farm, I’d be working with my Dad, he’d have me building stuff like go-karts, mini bikes. I learned that’s kind of what makes me happy and that’s what I want to do with my life. One of the things I always tell my students is, I don’t want you to find a job — find a career that you love. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: So you were saying you have been teaching for almost 30 years and you started one of the first chopper build classes, ever. Talk to me a bit about that chopper class that’s been going on for over 20 years now. Kevin Baas: When I got into teaching, I took over a program that had all the patterns for little toolboxes and the patterns for little birdhouses. We still did it to get the experience. But then I started telling myself, “There’s gotta be a better way.” If I’m bored teaching it, they’re super bored trying to learn it and I don’t want that. What can I do to spark some excitement and just come up with something that’s revolutionary and hasn’t been done? I don’t like to follow what other people have done. I always felt like I wanted to do something different. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: Can you talk to me about the importance of community and collaboration within the motorcycle building class that you started? How have you seen this play out in the classroom with the students? Kevin Baas: For me, it’s all about getting the kids [to the bike shows] to get the exposure with the community, have that camaraderie and show people what you’re doing and what you are learning. These kids will walk home with a stack of business cards from all kinds of businesses that come to that show when they see what these kids are doing and their passion. They’re like, “I wanna hire you. I need 20 of you for my company.” So, the camaraderie and the community and the love for it has been great. I really make sure that we’re respectful and that we feel fortunate for what we do. We don’t take it for granted. We appreciate everybody who’s behind us on it, especially you guys, Russ Brown. You’ve been behind me forever, helped sponsor me when I was building for Born Free in California and everything. That’s a love that never gets lost. Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys: What makes a great chopper design, and how do you incorporate that idea into your build? Kevin Baas: It’s all about flow, form, function. These bikes have to be ridden. They have to be safe. There’s a fine line of, “That’s not safe, but it’s cool and we’ll run it.” A spool front wheel with no brake — it’s not the most safe thing because front brakes are your most stopping power on a motorcycle, but some bikes, it just looks better with that clean look. With our bikes and our builds and my whole life, it’s always been about, I need to be able to get on this thing. I want to be able to ride it to California tomorrow and not worry about anything. It’s a testament to how you build the bike to make sure you’re doing things right, not cutting the corners.
