of times the weeds don’t look so bad at all. They come up
green, have pretty little leaves and a lot of times even bear “Never Ride Alone”
a pretty little flower - only to fool us into not pulling them out.
Before you know it, these little weeds have taken over the Pastor Johnny Lujan
lawn, the garden and our entire world. What are these little
weeds? They are the naysayers in your life that tell you
you’re crazy for going after your dream. These are the folks
that hold you back from accomplishing the desires of your
heart; those that tempt you when you are battling for your life
in recovery, or even trying to save your marriage. They are
so miserable themselves; they can’t stand failing alone, so
they latch upon you like a leech, sucking the happiness and
opportunity right out of your sail.

There are also more weeds that appear in your life that are
just miserable all the time and they don’t even appear with
little green leaves or pretty little flowers. These are the folks
that are ungrateful about everything. Have pessimistic views
about life, the world and maybe even you. Some call them
Debbie downers or Pessimistic Paul’s, but no matter what
you call them, they are always down. I’m sure we could
name a few of them in our lives. They seem to suck the life
right out of you before you even have a chance to get a
glimpse of sunshine. Watch out for these kinds of weeds for
they are the most dangerous. We tend to feel sorry for these
poor little weeds, but if we let them alone in our garden, they
will soon strangle us to failure, or we join up with them in
their little doom and gloom world. Watch Yourself!

Ride to Fort Bragg

Sharing the Road

Water Tower in Winters On a Friday morning, 13 riders on 10 Harleys took
off together, quickly riding east on I-80 to Davis. Once

Riding on a motorcycle connects the rider with the
environment. The cool wind in your face or the hot sun
on your back, the aroma of crops growing in a field
or the stench of recent roadkill, riders understand all
of their senses come alive. Some like to ride too fast,
others take time to enjoy the view. I love riding along
country backroads. The farms catch my attention and
so do the old water towers. Just about every old tower
proudly wears the name of the town it once supported.
Most of California’s old water towers are no longer
necessary due to the use of ground level holding tanks
that use pumps to create water pressure.

Outside the farmlands, we took CA-128E through the
Putah Creek Wildlife Area. Located downstream of the
Monticello Dam, this riparian habitat is 673 acres of
beautiful hills that supports deer and various species
of birds. Putah Creek originally flowed over the land

Due to water shortage, California has enacted
emergency regulations prohibiting certain uses of
water. The state also established a maximum use
standard of 55 gallons per person per day. Yet all over
California, counties issue new construction permits for
housing tracts with homes built on lots using minimum
lot line requirements. People will come and they will
buy the houses. If we do not have enough water for the
people now, I wonder how the state will accommodate
even more people?

Just past the giant rabbit, we stopped for lunch at the Fog over the Pacific Ocean
Gott’s Roadside Restaurant. The size of this outdoor
walk up hamburger stand is amazing. The line of Napa Vineyard
customers, patiently waiting to order, snakes around Article and photos contributed
the rails into the parking lot. Service was quick and by Cyndee Reed Van Hooser
the food was good. The road outside the restaurant is
busy. There was no good way for us to pull out of the
parking lot together. One of our riders blocked traffic.
Seeing what was happening, vehicles stopped and let
us pull out. Yes, blocking traffic happens sometimes,
and so does kindness from other drivers. This two-
lane road took us to the base of the mountains where
majestic vineyards are growing.

We continued towards the coast, riding through the tall
pines in Santa Rosa and past the Petrified Forest. This
is the only Petrified Forest in California that dates back
to the Pliocene era, approximately 3.4 million years ago.
It is also home of the largest petrified trees in the world.
We could not stop because we still had hours to go before
we would arrive at the coast. Our first vision of the ocean
was a heavy cloud of fog settling over the water at Jenner.
Tired and hungry, we arrived in Fort Bragg around 6 p.m.
We checked into our hotel, went to dinner and decided to
get some rest. We will visit Fort Bragg tomorrow.

Sunset Rodeo Grounds

RIDE DESTINATION:

Coarsegold – Oakhurst - Mariposa
A lthough things have been quite hectic in our lives
lately, we did manage to get away over Labor Day Bar area
weekend. We were able to get tickets for Whitey
Morgan’s 5th Annual birthday bash in Coarsegold.
In previous years, the event was held at Bandit Town in
North Fork (the geographical center of California.) As the
party has grown, this year’s event was held out at the Rodeo
Grounds in Coarsegold. What started out as a couple or
three band events, is now a two-day affair with eight bands.
A kind of festival thing. There is dry camping available and
RV parking as well.

So, we made our way south and a couple of hours later,
we stopped for lunch. Most of the time when we are down
this way, our preference is Louie’s Place Saloon and Grill
in La Grange - one of our favorite bars. Great atmosphere,
outside area for music, and good eats. Cindy likes the fish
tacos. I’m fond of the pork shanks.

Some real nice country two-laners will take you down to
Mariposa and then SR49 into Oakhurst, the Gateway to
Yosemite. That’s where we would hang out for the weekend.
Hotel prices were jacked for the holiday, so we stayed at the
Vista Yosemite Inn. Pretty basic, but clean.

Later in the afternoon, we rolled on over to the rodeo
grounds to see what was happening. What you’ll see is a kind
of mini–Bandit Town, which is a contemporary 19th century
western layout. The difference is that the rodeo grounds
buildings aren’t as extensive and are mostly facades. Still, a
really nice setting for a Country Rock concert.

After we arrived, the second band up was Gethen Jenkins.
Some of you may have seen him play during the Fryed
Brothers Bash in the Redwoods, or with Harry and the guys

Liberty at the Grill We should mention that during Morgan’s set, a crazy thing
happened that we have never seen before. The band was
playing when all of a sudden Whitey stopped singing and we
heard him say “you gotta go man!” The next thing we notice
some people running toward the exit that takes you behind
the stage. Whitey took off his guitar, jumped off the stage
and helped escort someone off the premises. After the dust
settled, he was back on stage and apologized to everyone
for the disruption. Evidently some guy had way too much
to drink and was harassing a woman in the crowd down in
front of the band (turns out it was Whitey Morgan’s wife.)
After explaining what went down, he received well deserved

The next day I decided to explore some of the local
blacktop. I found a real nice loop that started in Oakhurst on
SR41, which I took west to Coarsegold. From there it was a
right turn on Road 415, out past the Rodeo Grounds and up
to Road 600. A right turn there will take you back to 49 and
Oakhurst. Road 600 is a darn awesome ride.

Before heading over to Coarsegold for day two, we had
our midday meal at the Oakhurst Grill, one of the nicer
establishments in town. They also have the Whiskey 41
Lounge on site. They will serve food off the menu in the
lounge as well.

Back to Back Memorial Rides

Bikes at Sarah’s Garden August 27 (Vacaville / Orangevale) Fall is slowly creeping
up on us, as the end of August approaches.

For the 22nd, and perhaps for its final time, we were heading
to Vacaville for the annual Sarah Renee Phillips Memorial Run.
Sarah was a victim of a homicide back in 2000. Glenn Phillips,
Sarah’s father, and President of Abate 17 has kept her memory
alive through this poignant event. As in years past, riders meet
up at Miss Darla’s. Registration starts at 8am and by 9:30 the
parking lot was filling up with some fine-looking machines.
There was coffee and doughnuts and other refreshments
as riders filed in. All proceeds from this run go to the Sarah
Renee Phillips Scholarship Fund. More than $90,000 in grants
have assisted students in their educational pursuits. Kick
stands up was at 10am, so a little before the hour Glenn took
the floor for the pre-ride. He struggled a little getting through
his speech, as I’m sure memories of his daughter came to
the forefront. But after our emotions settled a bit, we saddled

up. Cindy and I, along with a half dozen of our
fellow CMA (Christian Motorcyclists Association),
took the short ride over to Sarah’s Garden. The
garden was originally built by fellow students at
Vaca Pena Middle School. It is located across a
pedestrian path next to the school grounds. Such
a beautiful, peaceful place. There are plants,
pictures, a tricycle, and other mementos that
belonged to Sarah. It’s just a solemn and moving
walk-through. After a time for reflection, Glenn
and his son-in-law had some words to share, and
prayers for Sarah, the family, and all of us who
came to remember her. It was a very quiet walk
back to our bikes.

Sarahs Garden Our next stop would be the Suisun Valley
Filing Station, otherwise known as Mankas
Corner. With the Mankas Grill across the street
and a fine antique store next door, it’s a nice
place to visit. We hung out for a while, and then
we headed out to Turtle Rock and their famous
egg rolls. This was a really nice ride up to
SR121, and then on to SR128. 121 is especially
nice. Our final destination would be the Green
River Brewery in Winters. We really like the
brewery. Inside it’s like your typical brewery,
but out back is where the place shines. It’s like
a park setting. Covered seating, lots of trees
and shade. Great place to hang out. When we
arrived, they were getting the BBQ going and
Dean and the Southbound Band were set up
and ready for everyone to arrive.

The CMA Crew Minus Rick

Flag Presentation at TJ COL Pre VFW COL Meet Up
TJ and his daughter Reagan
We couldn’t stay for too long, though. We had another
memorial service to attend in Orangevale. So, back on the
scoots, we made a quick gas stop, hopped on the freeway,
and headed to the meet up. We would gather with other
members of our CMA chapter, various groups, and several
MC’s. After mingling and a prayer, we would join the ride to
the VFW Center for the Celebration of Life for TJ Love. It was
a standing room only tribute to a fine young man.

Our group participated after the Modified Motorcycle
Association of California contacted Dave, our Chapter
President, and asked if we could join the ride. It was at
the request of TJ’s father, Tom, and his grandmother. Since
Dave and Shannon are friends of the Love family, he said we
would be honored.

TJ was a local kid, born here in Sacramento. He graduated
in 2014 from Bella Vista High School, before joining the US
Army. He was eventually stationed at Fort Campbell in
Tennessee, where he met his wife, Erin. They decided to
settle down there after his discharge along with beautiful
daughter Reagan. Sometimes things in life happen that
we can’t explain or understand, for on August 13, TJ was
called home to the Lord. In the folder honoring TJ’s life, the
following poem was posted. For everyone who has felt the
sting of loss, we hope you are comforted by these words…

THE CHAIN
We knew little that morning
That God was going to call your name

In life we loved you dearly
In death we do the same

It breaks our hearts to lose you
You did not go alone

For part of us went with you
The day God called you home

You left us
Peaceful memories
Your love is still our guide
And though we cannot see you
You are always at our side
Our family chain is broken
And nothing seems the same
But as God calls us one by one
The chain will link again.

Honky Tonk, Outlaw, Country Western
T here is not one genre that can truly define the brand of music
being produced by Hill Country Truckers. Rolling down the New album “Deal
hills of Eldorado County, Hill Country Truckers made their With the Devil”
first appearance in the small bars and clubs that Sacramento had Available NOW on
to offer. Like a child that has been nurtured from birth, Hill Country all media platforms
Truckers have gone through all the stages and tested all (well, including: Spotify,
most) of the limits the music industry has. iHeart, Pandora,
iTunes, Amazon,
In their infancy, Hill Country Truckers worked hard in gaining
strength, endurance, and balance to face the long journey that Google, Etc.
brought them where they are today. The journey of Hill Country
Truckers began with a much different line up than we see today. Hill Country Truckers:
Their transformation was slow, beginning with Johnny Utah (rhythm Johnny Utah: Lead Vocals/Rhythm Guitar
guitar and lead vocals) firing his existing line up and building it Ryan Beighley: Lead Guitar/Backup Vocals
back from the ground up, starting with the recruitment of Ryan
Beighley. Ryan Beighley (lead guitar and backup vocals) filled a David (DW) Wren: Pedal Steel Guitar
void in the band as a high energy, multi-talented musician with Joe Edwards: Drums
many contacts in the area. Next to be pulled into the vortex was
David Wren (pedal steel guitar) having graced many of the most Cliff Middlebrook: Bass Guitar
coveted stages throughout his career he has cemented himself into
history by being inducted into two Hall of Fames for Pedal Steel Management & Booking:
Players. One fateful day, Beighley called Joe Edwards (drums) on, Gasshouse Entertainment LLC
whom he had played with before. “Hey, you want to sit in for this
country band I am playing in? Got a show in a couple of weeks.” [email protected]
Edwards replied with a simple, “Sure, send me the song list.” Ryan Website: www.hillcountrytruckers.com
hit back with “Ok, can you make a rehearsal?” Edwards reply “Sure. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/hillcountrytruckers
When?” Then, Beighley dropped the bomb, “Tonight!” Four of five
of Hill Country Truckers was formed needing only one more piece Instagram: @hillcountrytruckers
to make them whole. Cliff Middlebrook (bass guitar) now throws YouTube: Hill Country Truckers
down the pounding bass lines for Hill Country Truckers and away
we go……

From playing for peanuts in small bars to opening for some very
well established and rising stars of country music, Hill Country
Truckers has made a notable name and reputation for themselves.
They have shared the stage with Whitey Morgan and the 78’s,
Hellbound Glory, Tim Montana, and Josh Ward, and they have
been asked to perform at corporate events and brand introductions.

September 2022 welcomed the release of Hill Country Truckers
long awaited debut EP Deal with the Devil. The life span Hill Country
Truckers continues growing to be more and more experienced as
time goes on. 2023 will prove to be a pivotal year for Hill Country
Truckers. More recordings and releases, more high-profile shows,
tours, festivals, etc. “We want it all and we want it now!!!!!”

OAKLAND H.O.G. CHAPTER MAKES A NEW CONNECTION

Helen VanSlyke and her August 6 (Oakland): The Oakland H.O.G. Chapter from Oakland Harley-
Guide Dog Niles Davidson (www.oaklandh-d.com) had the opportunity to make a difference
during a chapter meeting. At the San Francisco Marathon in 2021 and the
Pastor Macklin and Edison (Eddy) Berkeley Marathon in 2022, several Oakland H.O.G. members volunteered
checking out a Harley their time to act as security for the runners. Members were assigned
different areas to monitor and direct traffic as needed. And as a gesture
of appreciation, the organizers of the event donated a set amount per
member. It was then decided at a chapter meeting that the money would
be donated to The Guide Dogs of America (www.guidedogsofamerica.org)

After enduring early mornings and some unhappy bystanders at the
marathons, it all seemed worth the hassle when the Oakland H.O.G.
Chapter met Pastor Albert Macklin and his dog “Edison” and Helen
VanSlyke and her dog “Niles” at a chapter meeting. Both Pastor Macklin
and Helen were graduates of the Guide Dogs of America. Eddy and
Niles were beautiful black Labradors who had been trained to become
companions for those who are blind/visually impaired. Chapter members
asked questions about the dogs and their experience with meeting their
companions. Pastor Macklin asked about the chapter and what it was like
to ride a Harley-Davidson.

After the meeting, Pastor Macklin spent time feeling the difference
between all the motorcycles. Both Pastor Macklin and Helen were both
definitely interested in riding on the back of a Harley.  Pastor Macklin sat
on a 114 Street Glide to get the feel of it. It was too bad that we didn’t
fire the bike up…THAT would have really left an impression with him, but
his smile said it all!  We were able to extend our visit by having lunch at
Harry’s Hofbrau in San Leandro.

Pastor Macklin and Helen were both thankful for the donation and
the benefit that it will bring. The opportunity to see in action where the
money was going made an impact with the Oakland H.O.G. chapter.
Oakland H.O.G. Chapter meetings are held at Oakland H-D located at
151 Hegenberger Road in Oakland on the first Saturday of each month at
10:30am. Join us!
