Inn of the Lost Coast waves on shore

RIDE DESTINATION:

Alderpoint – Carlotta – Rio Dell – Shelter Cove

So, this month we headed up north for the annual Friday morning breakfast in Williams at Granzellas
Thunder Roads NorCal trek to Shelter Cove. This
weekend is always a lot of fun and invariably a fine
adventure. It seems like, more often than not, something
unusual pops up.

Like a couple of years ago, a late unexpected snowstorm
came through the area. Since it was raining already, we
all drove that year. But a few people who did not make it
down early got caught in the snow and had trouble getting
over King’s Peak. In the afternoon, Mike (the owner of
the Inn of the Lost Coast) received a call that someone
was stranded, so we hopped in his truck and went out to
pull them up to the top of the hill. While hooking up the
tow rope, I accidently locked Mike’s keys in his truck. We
had to call the Inn for a backup set of keys but had to hoof
it up to the top of the peak to get phone reception. About
halfway up we heard loud honking coming from the top.
Then we saw an SUV barreling down the hill out of control
in the snow. I dove to the left; Mike went to the right and
the car blew past us. It was a miracle that the car didn’t
hit anyone below. We found out later from some EMT’s
that were down the hill a bit, that the lady got control of
her vehicle and made it through without incident. Nothing
quite that exciting happened this time around, but loose
cannons or not, we had a fun time.

After the great crab and tri-tip feed on Friday night,
we woke up to a nice morning on Saturday. I had made
plans to ride out to Alderpoint (aka: Murder Mountain.) I
was glad that a few of the brave cohorts decided to come
along as escorts. Ha! I guess there are some serious
“farmers” out in this area. They don’t appreciate people
making wrong turns or hiking around in the wrong places.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 12

Fog Alderpoint

Redwoods SR 36

I can see that. I wouldn’t want people traipsing around

my property either. Anyway, the area got its reputation

when, over a period of years several people disappeared

from the area. Evidently, folks would hire on to work on

the farms, and after a while, more than a few ended up

missing. One case in particular stands out. It is the murder

of Garrett Rodriguez, a cannabis farmer, in 2013. If you’re

interested, check out the Netflix special that covers some

of the goings on at ‘Murder Mountain’. Brave Cohorts in Carlotta
After breakfast at the Fish Tank, we hit the road. Along

for the ride were Dale, Denise and Larry. Our three-bike cool ride through beautiful green valleys that meander in
convoy made our way up Shelter Cove Road and then and out of gnarly oak forests. A great way to start your
on to Alderpoint Road. At this time of year (March), this morning. FYI, there is a small general store in Alderpoint if
twisty up and down road is especially nice. A pleasantly you want to take a butt break or something.

From there, it’s more fine riding north to Bridgeville on
Highway 36. After 45 miles or so of backwoods riding, you
can kick it up on the smooth asphalt benders along this
route. By the time we reached Carlotta, we were ready for
a good lunch, so we parked our scoots out front of Tornado
Dave’s Bar and Grill. It’s an older establishment with a lot
of character. Checking out the menu we were pleasantly
surprised with the many choices and what was served to
the table was very good.

Back on 36 after lunch, we made our way through several
stands of beautiful redwoods on the way to Highway 101.
There we turned south to Rio Dell. After gassing up, we
went up the street and paid a visit to the Family M.C.
Humboldt. They were hosting the 47th Annual Pisces
Party. We were there early, but there were 25-30 bikes

out front already. Looked like Butt Break
it was going to be a huge blow
out. Also, having Harry and
the Fryed Brothers Band in
the house will kick up the heat
at any party. We would have
liked to have hung out for a
while, but it was time to head
back. About 10 miles out of
Rio Dell it started to rain. Not
too bad, but for a bit we felt the
sting of some mini hail. It didn’t
last long, and we made it back
in time for the Saturday night
spaghetti feed.

Everyone had a great time
that night, and after a peaceful
night of sleep, we had a nice
leisurely cruise back home.
As always, we made our
reservations at the Inn of the
Lost Coast for next year before
we left. How about you?

6TH ANNUAL
2020

SHGEELTTEARWACYOVETRROIPAPIDN’
For the past six years, Stan and I have brought a
group of TRM NorCal readers to our favorite remote
destination in Humboldt County…Shelter Cove. This
year Stan encouraged me to go without him because for
the past few overnight events, I’ve stayed home because
we are unable to leave Gus (our 13.5 year old senior dog)
with friends to watch him while we’re away. This was a
difficult decision to make, but I wanted to share this gem
of a destination with someone that had never been to the
Lost Coast before, so I asked my kindred spirit Nicky (who
is 20 years younger than me) if she wanted to join me.
Stan and I met Nicky at the Redwood Run ten years ago
and we connected immediately. It was fun to witness the
wow-factor again that that comes with staying at the Inn
of the Lost Coast (www.innofthelostcoast.com) a beautiful
oceanfront inn on top of a bluff overlooking the Pacific
Coast.

Although, Nicky and I felt a little guilty when we heard
that it was pouring rain on the home front while we went
about the cove searching for whales migrating and sight-
seeing in our tank tops during a beautiful weekend on the
coast in March. The evening we arrived introductions were
made and we feasted on fresh crab, delicious steak with
all kinds of side dishes. This is a special bonus for guests
from the Cove Rats MC, the Family MC of Humboldt and
the Inn of the Lost Coast guests with reservations during
our annual TRM NorCal getaways. I was thrilled because
Nicky was kind enough to separate the yummy crab from
its shell for me just like Stan does! Later that evening, we
hung out around the fire pit and enjoyed the company of
the others in our group well into the wee hours.

The following morning those that rode into the cove

went on a scenic adventure with contributor Chuck Loseth

to be a part of his monthly RIDE DESTINATION article

this month. And for those of us that stayed behind were

treated to a brunch hosted

by the Southern Humboldt

cannabis cultivation and as well as educating us more
about the compassionate care mindset of cannabis. I
believe they are on to something - give them a follow at

Later that evening, we were treated to a delicious
spaghetti dinner prepared by Brian and The Family MC
of Humboldt. Thanks guys! Then it was a lively game of
Left, Right Center – a fun and simplistic dice game which
we incorporated quarters as our donation to the eventual
overall winner. Thank you to the Inn of the Lost Coast
for your continued support of this publication and to all
that have shared this amazing RIDE DESTINATION with
us during this time of year.

Memorial Ride And Charity Auction

Iam honored to have been given the opportunity to build this custom motorcycle for the “Patrick Eberhardt Memorial
Ride & Charity Auction”.  Patrick was a second generation Cave Creek Hells Angel Member that was tragically killed in
February of 2015 at the young age of 23. Patrick was an upstanding young man with a huge heart who was taken too
young.
This year marks the 5th Anniversary of the event which will be held on April 12th, starting with Registration at 8am at the
Steel Horse Saloon in Phoenix, AZ. Registration is $20 and includes an event T-shirt. At 10am, there will be a scenic group
ride lead by the Hells Angels Cave Creek Charter to the Roadrunner Saloon in New River, AZ. The pack and group ride
will return to Steel Horse Saloon where the Charity Auction will happen at 1pm. The winning ticket for the raffle bike will
also be drawn and a winner will be announced live on Facebook, winner does not have to be present to win, but would be
responsible for shipping expense.

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 24

The motorcycle was donated to the Eberhardt
Memorial Foundation by Cave Creek
Prospect Cody and has been completely
rebuilt and customized to become a BadAzz
custom FLH Bobber. The donor motorcycle
was 1978 Harley Davidson FLH in a stock
dresser style configuration. It had been sitting
for years as its owner Cody had been in the
military and unable to use his motorcycle.
The bike was all there but had suffered from
being in storage, it pretty much needed a
full rebuild and was a perfect donor for this
project. The 74” cubic inch Shovelhead
engine and 4 speed transmission was
replaced with a 100” cubic inch EVO type
engine and 5 speed transmission, all other
components were original to the bike. The
bike was built with many custom one-off
fabricated parts.
