Memorial Day Bike Parade 2020

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on
the last Monday of May, to honor and mourn
the men and women who died while serving in
the U.S. military. The Civil War claimed more lives than
any conflict in American history. A day of remembrance
was established to pay tribute to the fallen soldiers,
and was originally known as Decoration Day. Memorial
Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.
Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting
cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings
and participating in parades.

Sometimes a simple idea becomes a plan and a great
idea. We were looking for a Memorial Day Parade. It
was disappointing to discover that in keeping with CDC
guidelines and California Shelter in Place crowd limits,
all of the local Memorial Day parades were cancelled.
Memorial services and group placement of flags at
gravesites in local cemeteries were also cancelled.
Sierra Thunder Harley Owners Group decided to take
matters into our own control and planned a Memorial
Day Ride to commemorate our fallen heroes. Looking
for a special place to honor veterans, permission was
obtained from the Sacramento Veterans Administration
Medical Center at Mather, to circle the hospital property

After the loops around the buildings, we parked in
front of the Medical Center and were greeted by a
representative from the City of Rancho Cordova and
a newsman from KCRA 3, local TV. Both asked for
interviews and photos. Sierra Thunder HOG was proud
to share our reasons and intentions. It was explained
that it is important to honor veterans on Memorial Day
every year. Some of these veterans may not be here
next year, and every year we continue to lose more
veterans. After the bikes were parked and the people
gathered, patriotic music was played. Everyone stood
for the National Anthem, holding their hands over their
heart. It was a somber moment when Taps was played
as the last song. The former military members saluted.

RIDE DESTINATION:
Groveland

We had not been down Groveland way in quite a while, so we planned out an overnighter, packed up the
bagger and headed south. I remember the last time I was in Groveland was for an Antique Motorcycle Club
of America get together. I rode down for it with Stan (TRM NorCal’s editor) and it turned out to be the last
good ride I took on my Fat Boy before I sold it. Kind of sad now 

On the way down, we stopped in Jamestown for a bit. Took a butt break and walked the streets. Would have eaten at the
Willow, but we were there too early. It hadn’t opened yet. Instead of SR49, we took Seco Street out of town. This road will
eventually take you to Jacksonville Road and then on to SR49/120.

Old Priest Grade

The scenery crossing over the Jacksonville Bridge is
something to look forward to. After that, it’s a short way down
to that fine road, Priest Grade. This is always a fun piece
of asphalt. I also like going back down Old Priest Grade.
Looking across the canyon and seeing vehicles snaking
along the Grade is pretty nice. We thought about hitting the
café, but we decided to stop later on.

We pulled into the city of Groveland and made our way to
the Groveland Hotel (www.groveland.com)

Saloon was built, mostly of

rock and granite, shortly

after the 1849 gold rush. Originally a store, ‘Granite Store’

supplied the miners and locals with provisions. It was later

sold and became a speakeasy with the name “Jake’s Place.”

In 1937, it was given its current name after a huge iron door

arrived from England. Special ordered and then shipped

around the tip of South America, it finally made its way to

Groveland by mule. The door was to protect the building

from fire. Since many towns burned down back in those

days, it was said “just close the door and open it back up

when it’s over.”

we had a great stay in Groveland, but it was time to head back

On our way back to Priest Grade, we got stuck behind

Thunder Roads Magazine® Northern California 20

W e are fortunate to have so many talented
bike builders here in Northern California,
but there are a few that stand out above the
crowd. Like the custom builders that not only
create a very cool bike, but rather a highly functional piece of
motorcycle art. Stacy McCleary from Manteca is one those
rare few. Anyone who has been around the bike show scene
knows that he has created several show stopping motorcycles
in the past that have won at all levels, and this motorcycle is
just one of them. Now you could not blame Stacy if he just
covered these bikes up and kept them under wraps until the
next show, but that is not his style, he believes that bikes
are built to ride. This beauty is the bike that he and his wife
Danell ride around the Sturgis Rally every year. Stacy builds
all his bikes in his home shop where he fabricates a lot of the
parts and resources others from swap meets and as you can
see he is very creative and resourceful. A while back, I was
super excited when Stacy offered to let me take one of his
latest builds out for a ride. I was blown away by the quality
of the ride and the way that custom motorcycle handled, I
would have ridden that bike all day if I could have - so I can
attest to the fact that his motorcycles function as good as
they look. So let’s get into the nuts and bolts of this ride!
