If You Can See What I Can See …

You Might Be Riding on the Back of a Harley

The Accident - 5 Years Ago

You know those memories that pop up on social media.
This is one of mine. August 7, 2016. The day started
with a sweet morning ride through El Dorado National
Forest. All experienced riders and close friends, members of
Sierra Riders, Grateful Ones and Gold Country Indian Riders.
We were the Sweep, the last bike, expected to keep everyone
together and take care of the bikes ahead of us.

A little before noon, we stopped for lunch in Markleeville. It
was a hot day so I took off my lightweight jacket. Two men
showed up. They knew someone in our group and joined us.
They rode at the back of the pack, in front of the Sweep. I guess
they did not know the unwritten rule about keeping an eye on
the bike in front of you and the bike behind you. We were cruising
along at a moderate speed, with reasonable distance between
bikes, enjoying the sweeping twists and curves along CA-4.

It was an eruption in the road, just a hard bump. We went
flying up and the bike ditched down. Curt turned us towards
the safe edge of the road and grabbed for me. It happened so
quickly, I was confused. I did not realize we were going down.
I knew I was sliding on the asphalt. I was wearing rhinestone

feel the stones at my throat. I thought the stones had come

Curt’s long sleeve tee shirt was tore off his arms. The CHP said

I went into shock, got up, and wandered around in circles.

There was road construction in several places along I40. One of them
was, no joke, ten miles long. There was no way the bike was going to
tolerate ten miles of crawling stop and go, so “damn the torpedoes”, I
got on the paved shoulder and rode all that way up the squeeze point,
merged, and within 5-6 minutes I was back in the wind. Hopefully, if I had
gotten stopped, the officer would have understood. Then about a hundred
miles out of Little Rock, I got hit with a monsoon. No thunderstorm this
time, but a full on drenching. After about 40 miles of that, I got off at a
rest stop and a half hour later, it lightened up and I got going again. Not
done yet, though. When I reached the Mississippi, the I40 Bridge was
under repair. All traffic was being routed to the old bridge. It was another
cluster (you know what!) But the worst day of my trip was over.

BIKE NIGHT

August 5 (Sacramento): Sunshine has been
itching to go someplace and do something. A
nice afternoon ride with dinner sounded great.
I’ve wanted to check out the Sacramento
Bike Night I heard so much about. The temp
had dropped so it wasn’t like riding thru the
desert that Thursday afternoon. Dinner was
long at the Cheese Factory on purpose, didn’t
want to show up at Bike Night early. As we
pulled up around 6:45 to Bike Night the bikes
were starting to gather. There were two of
Sacramento’s finest watching the crowd to
keep us in line, they didn’t do a great job of
it, but we did play well with others. I think the
Po Po’s turn the other cheek for our benefit.
Lots of smoke from two different sources…
think about it!
As soon as Sunshine and I pulled up and
parked three people walked up and struck up
a conversation. It was that way all night. As
soon as anyone parked they started talking to
the people next to them before even getting
off their bike. Speaking of bikes all were
represented, metric, American, rat, customs,
Can Am, Limy, trikes, sidecars, you name it
and there it was.
Sacramento Bike Night is every Thursday
night at Howe Bout Arden, bikes start showing
up around 6pm and goes to whenever. I don’t
know who started it or if it is sponsored by
anyone. I was told this gathering has been
going on for twenty years, who knew… not
me! As I’ve said before about other events,
I’ll be back (best Arnold voice) Come on out
and have fun! PS… it’s FREE!!!
Ride on and keep the shiny side up!

died of blood loss otherwise.Injuries from this incident ended his

budding military career before it had really begun, leaving him

with a strong opinion about helmets and safety when it comes

to motorcycles. The incident did have a silver lining, in that he

still had access to the British Army’s version of the GI Bill, and

he used that to attend university, where he earned a degree in

Architectural Design and Town Planning.

In the early 80’s he had an opportunity to move to America,

creating technical illustrations. While it was supposed to be

temporary, his girlfriend at the time was killed in a traffic accident

towards life in America.

Switching from a Honda chopper to a Harley was also a

seemingly small change that had huge ramifications. Hanging

around patch holders eventually led Spike into the club life

himself. And having spent decades in that world, we were curious

how things had changed over time.
